…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

1. I’m a 32 yr old female living in CT with my boyfriend and a fiesty chihuahua (who btw could be Burger’s long lost bro! will have to share some pics!) and a sweet dacshund…those are our kids…for now!
2. I visit the site a few times a week. We are updating the kitchen, bath and just about every other room in our condo! Getting great ideas from you guys, so thanks a bunch!!! (I lost my job in April so i finally have the time to do this stuff, but of course, it has to be totally DIY.)
3. I love all of the design advice- especially the shopping/where to find info/links..awesome stuff! Oh and cannot forget your lovely wedding! Sooo many wonderful ideas for the big day!
4. I think you guys have a great thing going. I love the decorating ideas, maybe you could share more of your party/entertaining ideas (like weddings or party tablescapes) but that’s just me! :) And maybe color schemes or paint color advice – seems to always be a big issue with room re-dos!!! (I went through 5 different yellow paint colors myself just for our kitchen..ugh!)
5. Keep up the good work guys!!! I think you should try to pitch your own show to HGTV!!! Sure to be a hit!

1. Female, 25, Dallas, bachelorette homeowner! I’ve owned my house for a little over a year, definitely no children, no pets.
2. Daily
3. DIY in and outside the home, before and afters, house crashing, we’re digging. I like all of these posts because they are what inspire me to tackle the next fun project in my own home.
4. I can’t WAIT to see what else yall do in your house whether major rennovations, little DIY projects, and painting all the ceilings! (LOVE painted ceilings, can’t wait to figure out best colors to do mine) I would also love to see more house crashing, and post about trips out to your favorite stores like Target, Home Goods, and Lowe’s. I’d also love to see more posts about inspiring things you find while out shopping in specialty home design and lighting stores. And more tips about where to find eco friendly products and what those products are specifically would be great as well!

1. Hi! My name is Annie. I’m a 26 yr old female living in Hawaii. I’m married to a super fab guy in the Army, and we have yet to add chitlins or doggies to our fam.
2. I read YHL @ least once a day, sometimes more when I come back to show my hubby new ideas. It’s a serious addiction :)
3. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the DIY posts and tutorials! In Hawaii, decorating a home can be uber expensive, and your DIY and budget friendly posts have been a lifesaver!! You’ve helped completely transform my approach to home decorating and design. (LOVE you for that!!) And the Before and After pics are insanely inspirational! Plus a few pics of Burger are always an added bonus ;)
4. I would love to see more budget friendly DIY posts. Also if you could suggest more stores that have shipping to Hawaii that would be fab.
5. In military housing we’re not allowed to paint the walls…maybe if you could do a few posts on other alternatives we could use to spruce up our bland walls.
6. I just wanted to say once againg that I LOVE LOVE LOVE YHL!! Thank you for sharing all of your fabulous ideas with us. You two are incredibly inspirational and charming! :) Oh and I have a bloggie too about a lot of randoms: htt://noonerslabellavita.blogspot.com

4. The more the better, keep it comin! The coolest thing ever would be if you guys did a life chat. Is it possible to add chat rooms to blogs?
5. Just get it G rated and I will be fine.
6. Nope, I think that covered it.

22 year old female in Richmond, VA. Working in advertising as well. Single, technically, but I’m recently ENGAGED! I just love saying that. No pets yet, but plans for a Shiba Inu named Ella.
How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
Whenever I can. YHL and Dooce are my jams. And wedding blogs, of which there are never enough.
What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
I’m currently loving the easy DIY makeovers, general advice for money saving and reuse. Since it’s just me here and I’m not rolling in money, it’s always good to conserve pennies here and there. Major home improvements aren’t applicable to my life quite yet, but they will be soon enough, and there is quite an arsenal of goodies to work with here. I also truly adore the How To section. Whenever I need a little pick me up, I just do one of those projects. Instant happiness.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
I think featuring specific “deals” every week or so would be great. Yes, they would probably sell out fast, but if you see an awesome item on Amazon or Pottery Barn, etc. that is easily accessible from the web, I think that would be a wonderful attribute to the site. I know you have the “things we love” sidebar, but it’d be great to have special deals and whatnot.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
Marriage. It’s on the mind…you understand.
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
I love young, happy, in love couples just like you. It’s an inspiration to see you so happy together and so successful and making your way with what you love to do. Congratulations.

I’m a 24yo girly girl living in Austin with my best friend and college roommate. We just moved into a new place and are (slowly) working to turn our jumble of mismatched/donated items into a well designed living space. This is why absolutely love Austin, because it offers a multitude of quirky, cute, and intriguing ideas to make our house our home. Not gonna lie, the idea of some Lowe’s cash would make that mountain of projects and paint jobs look a little less daunting… Wow, you’ve already got over 500 responses to this blog. Do you really read them all? And if so, do you ever sleep?
We both read your blog pretty religiously, in fact she’s probably already replied to this. I personally love your DIY pages, I’ve already bookmarked the ones I’m interested in taking on and am really excited to turn our blah yard into a haven for compost and greens. I think my roommate likes to read more about your lives!
No kids, wish we had animals, but the roommate is allergic to everything under the sun. So for now we’re setting with some fish and I keep praying to find a hypoallergenic cat that needs adopting. Know anyone?
My only suggestion for your site is to include more projects that don’t include major painting jobs. I dream of owning my own home, but for now I rent and can’t change the colors of my walls. I would love advice on major (non-permanent) changes to make over a room.
I really admire you guys, not only are you sharing your wonderful ideas with the world, but your inspiring people like me to take charge of my space and make it my own. Thanks!

1. Hi… my name is Amanda… I’m a blogaholic… I’m getting married next year and stumbled on the site when I discovered your wedding album (fantastic, btw). I’m in Madison Wisconsin working at the UW. My son is 12 and we’re currently looking for a house to buy for the five of us (me, fiancee, my son, and two huge cats).
2. I read YHL in Google Reader which I read a few times a day, so I catch most of your posts shortly after they get pushed to Reader.
3. Before and After pics, hands down, followed by DIY projects. You guys make it look easy and doable (this from someone who hasn’t really tackled any house projects yet… soon! I hope!!).
4. Your wonderful tone and openness are wonderful. Just keep at it. I’m not partial to video, since it’s difficult to skim, and tough to watch at work on the sly.
5. I think you guys do a great job of dealing with things as they come up, so I think sharing as you deal with life’s events as they happen works best.
6. I can’t believe I’m getting married!! Again!!! We need to buy a house already so I can get busy painting…

I’m subscribed in Google reader, which I read every day, so I read every post.
What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
Probably the DIY ideas. I like the give-aways but there are so many entries that I usually don’t try to enter.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?) I like the focus on green living – cleaning tips, compost, etc. I’d love some more advice on urban gardening too.

I like the major project posts more than the decorating ones, but I’m probably in the minority there.
Great work! I like how the site is organized and easy to navigate. It would be fun to see more house projects, but I know those can’t be happening 24/7.

I get YHL updates from Google Reader. If I’m busy, I only read my favourite kinds of posts. If I’m procrastinating, I usually end up in the archives pining over your sunroom.
My favourites are, in order: before & after, videos, design dilemmas.
Advice? Just keep churning out quality, entertaining posts. The videos were a great addition. Design dilemmas would be SO much better with after pictures, but you don’t have much control over that.

4. More DIY would be nice.
5. Can’t really think of anything…
6. You guys are awesome. You make living within your means seem effortless, but you never sacrifice beauty or function. I think that is fantastic. Thanks for writing–I’ll certainly keep reading…and shamelessly filching all of your ingenious ideas. Thanks!

1) Who am I?
I’m 41, married 11 years, no kids by choice. We have one dog named Stuart, aged 9 (his brother Kramer needs mentioning though–he died at age 16 in December and he’s still very much in our hearts and part of our family). We live in a fabulous condo in Santa Monica, CA. I do sometimes get jealous of your yard and all the land you have, but then I remember my ocean view and I feel a little better.
2) How often do you read Young House Love? At least daily, usually more
3) Favorite posts? DIYs, Before/afters, House crashing. Why? I like getting ideas for my own place.
4) What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Hard to say, you already do a great job. You are especially doing well with the “community” aspect of blogging.
5) Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? No–feel free to keep some stuff to yourself! And quit feeling like you have to answer the “kid” question. It’s no one’s business but your own!
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
Yes. I have been particularly impressed with your willingness to share your budgeting and financial goals. In my twenties, I had a huge problem w/ this and it is great to see a young couple who says “We have financial priorities, which means we have a budget and we stick to it.” As cool as having a fabulous house is, it should never take precendence over sound financial management and planning for the future. Ha ha–this sounds like I am a conservative person–I’m not–but I know from experience how stressful, and even dangerous, it can be to spend beyond ones means. Every time you post about being “thrifty” I am glad because I know how many younger readers you have that can benefit from your example.
You guys are my faves!

Who are you?
Hi! I was introduced to your blog earlier this year (i think?) by a friend. I’m a 28-yr old woman in gorgeous Pittsburgh PA. No kids, no pets, just bought a house of my own on my own, and thinking about asking my guy to marry me instead of the other way around.
How often do you read Young House Love? I probably read YHL about once a week, and whenever I want to see if you have DIY’d the same thing I am working on.
What are your favorite types of posts & why?
I like all the home improvement and DIY entries. I also like seeing your sources for the mood boards, in case there is a place I never thought to look. I’m not really into videos, but I can’t say I watch them anywhere at all, really.
Also I like when Sherry’s brother comes on and gets all “chemistry time” with the blog. More of that sort of thing!
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
I guess I wonder when the whole light and airy thing will poop out? I mean, not that anyone wants their home dark and heavy or dreary, but it seems like it’s the only style I ever see on this site and on most others (or ‘crisp and modern’, etc) I live in a house with a lot of original woodwork and its hard to find advice online these days that is fun and modern but retains that original character which I want to keep without being an old man about (and if in a couple years i change my mind, hey i can paint it, etc). So I am constantly looking for an interior design site that finds ways to incorporate the old and the new without painting everything. It’s hard… but it has also challenged me to really figure out what my own style is for the house. So I guess more inclusivity if you crash houses that mix the old and the new, and some suggestions on figuring out what you really like when it comes to light fixtures, furniture, etc, and making things really cohesive (you both have art backgrounds and folks like that seem to have a much better time at this cohesive thing I think…)

Married female, 26 living in California with two dogs and a cat. I’ve been reading YHL for about a year now and I try to check out the site daily. I really enjoy seeing before and after pics, as well as design dilemmas, but my all time favorite of the site is your fabulous mood boards. I often see things on the mood board that I think would work well in my home and I love that I can read on to find out where I can purchase the item. I do like the videos, but really enjoy having step by step directions in addition to the videos. I think it would be great if you two could show readers some examples of how to arrange furniture or decorate odd shaped rooms or those that have strange architectural features that most readers have to work around.

1. Female, 22, Midwest, Single, Sort of: I graduated in May, and am unemployed and living at home, so the family pup is mine until I (hopefully!) can move out. (Though I’ll miss him terribly when I do).
2. Twice a day, since you seem to post as much :) Also, I just started reading a couple weeks ago, but I’ve went back and read every single post (I’m unemployed and have free time remember?) because I just fell in love with your fun and helpful blog!
3. I like the posts on green living, the DIY/how tos, the fun personal posts, wedding posts, and the pics of inspirational homes and gardens. I also love the little tours of your house, you guys got so lucky with a great layout and location. Your before and afters are so inspiring! Oh and course, the pics of Burger are always adorable and appreciated :)
4. The structure of the mood boards can be hard to follow (too much scrolling back and forth). I also would rather see the mood board with the before and after, but I know that would be difficult for you two. Also, here’s kind of a random suggestion: How about some advice on converting student decor into grown up decor? I have boxes of brightly colored milk crates, tapestries, posters, etc. that suggest “coed” instead of “young professional.” I’m not really ready to part with it, and my budget could obviously benefit from some recycling anyway. I’d love more party/entertaining posts too.
5. Could you discuss your advertising careers and educational backgrounds? This is a somewhat selfish request, I’m trying to break into copywriting and your blog is so well put together, so you two are obviously good at what you do, so advice would be great :). But I’m also curious as to if your backgrounds are in art or writing or whatever, since you’re obviously very creative.
6. Your blog is a lot of fun! Even though our decorating styles are different I love that I can adapt a lot of your ideas. Also, I love your commitment to restoring a lovely old home instead of building something brand new and cookie cutter. Thanks for sharing it with the world :)

Who are you?: Female, early twenties, norcal (specifically the bay area), taken, no babies unless you count our cat.
How often do you read Young House Love?: Daily.
What are your favorite types of posts & why?: Easy DIY ideas, because our place always needs sprucing on a tight budget. Before & after pictures are fun, but not my fave. Design Dilemmas are my least fave. Major home improvement undertakings are fun, even the little things you do to switch up daily YHL life in your pad are fun. Videos are okay, I dislike the sounds you use in your intro because I do video editing and I know they’re stock stuff. I’m picky like that. I’m crazier with fonts though, so don’t get my started.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?: More posts. Sometimes you have weeks that are, well, weak. They’re a couple giveaway posts (not so much fun to read, especially if you don’t win, haha) and a design dilemma it seems. How about some fun DIY stuff? A couple recipes that are easy and YHL yum approved?
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?: I wish Sherry could do a wedding blog for DIY wedding stuff. When there isn’t a new post, I oggle over the wedding album.
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?: I think you could do way more with your garden. You’re all about curb appeal, yet you have a couple of bushes. Get some dirt under your nails and plant some stuff! If you put 1/100th of the effort you put into decorating a room, your outdoor area would be fantastic! I’m a flower planting junkie and your lack of garden drives me batty.
Love the blog though. It’s my favorite one, besides AT. :D

2. YHL was love at first…read, so I check you out every time you post (google reader helps, too)
3. I love the Design Dilemmas (I am working on my bedroom based on one of your inspirations, thanks!)
Your marriage post gave some great ideas to a friend of mine that wanted to keep her marriage simple,on budget yet chic and eclectic. She thanks you too!
Your videos make my day. I try to watch them at home cause I laugh histerically.
The Before and afters are amazing.
In other words just keep doing what you do!
4. I’d love to see more Design Dilemmas Solved. (Although I know that it’s not up to you!!)
5. I’d like more garden/outdoors related subjects. I’ve already started your composting project and it’s so easy!
So, to sum it up, thank you for all your ideas, inspiration and effort.

5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Love what you do!
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? Um… pressure… I’m a 3rd year med student. My husband is a Federal Investigator with the Dept of Energy. Geesh, we sound like dorks. We’re not. Promise. ha!

1. My name is Sierra. 24yr old female from Southern California. My hubby and I got married last May and just bought our MAJOR fixer upper house in June of this year. We have no kids yet, but our little pomeranian Angel is our pride and joy.
2. I have never been so interested in a blog in my life, but somehow, you guys have suckered me into becoming a daily reader. Being a first time homeowner, I can use all the help I can get. And I love that most of the projects you do are inexpensive. I also love how you guys break things down into simple, doable steps.
3. I personally love before and afters. It makes me feel like my old house has so much potential. I also really like the videos you guys have recently been doing. It really brings the site to life.
4. I love seeing your Design Dilemmas, But it really brings it to life when we see them solved. We gotta find a way to convince your people to send in their after pics right away. I also really love all the posts you’ve done about saving money. We can never get enough of that.
5. I have learned SO much from you guys. I barely recognize the house we live in, it doesn’t feel like the same house we bought only 3 months ago. I feel so spoiled every time I walk my house. I have made a bunch of small and large changes, mostly inspired by you. Having grown up my entire life in an apartment, I has never able to paint a wall, swap out a light fixture, or do anything that truly changed the look of the place. Now that I am a homeowner, I have learned so many things through your website, from our family’s help, and from spending way too much time at Home Depot. I now know how to lay wood floors, ground electrical units, install a new mounted light fixture, install a ceiling fan, install a dimmer switch, drywall patching and sanding, priming and painting, install new blinds, etc, etc, etc… Thank you for all your inspiration. It must be so good to know that what you do inspires thousands of people to pick up a paint brush and just go for it. Because of you, people are finding out that they don’t have to hire a handyman to do something. It’s possible to do so many things yourself, and its more fun anyway! Thanks for everything!

Female single parent, age 46. Richmond, VA
Read several times a week, nearly daily
I like the house crashing articles since they showcase a huge variety of design approaches. I like your “how to” posts, I originally found your blog while searching for a way to clean that typical black and white floor tile in the bathroom. Your before and after projects in your house are inspiring – I especially like when they point me to new resources in Richmond (yes, I know you’re a national phenom but I’m not well connected in Richmond so I need help here). I wish there were more “after” pictures from the mood boards. Maybe you can refund a tiny part of the price if people send in after pictures? That might be motivating and it would yield a bonus post for you. Speaking of mood boards, they seem to be getting repetitious – or maybe it’s that all your readers are asking for the same thing?
Please don’t become a V-log. I need something quiet to look at during work breaks. I can live without the give aways – not because I never win, but because they make you look a bit more commercial than fits the mood of your blog.

4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I really enjoy your posts about eco-friendly products – since often things which seem purer than pure don’t seem to work as well as the non-eco stuff, recommendations from people who have tried products out are like gold dust.

1. Hi, I’m Tracy! I’m a 26 yr. old librarian (though they like to call us Media Specialists nowadays) who works in a primary school down in lovely Chesapeake, Va. I’ve been married to my best friend for a little over 4 years now and we just bought our first house. We currently don’t have children though we would love to start a large family soon, and we don’t have any real pets though we do talk about our two imaginary dogs that are much easier to care for than the real things at this point in our lives. And yes, we know that’s a little weird…
2. I read YHL daily, though during the summer when I was off I would check the site 2-3 times a day (aka: obsessively).
3. I love DIY posts (especially since we’re doing a lot of that kind of stuff in our new home) and reading your archives on easy DIY projects. I also love, love, love a good before and after. And house crashing tours are also super fun and inspiring.
4. I think you have a great variety of topics that you share with us and that keeps things both interesting and helpful. I honestly can’t think of a thing I’d want you to change! I guess just more of everything, especially the fav’s I mentioned in answer #3. ;)
5. Keep sharing those thrifty tips with us budget watching, deal finding, blogging friends! I was so inspired by your writing and your projects that I finally ventured out into the blogging world and now am having so much fun sharing my projects and life with family and friends online. It’s become a wonderful creative outlet- kind of my scrapbook online that I’ll be able to look back on and remember what was happening in my life at a particular time. And YHL was a big catalyst in that, so thanks! Keep up the good work and happy blogiversary.

2. How often do you read Young House Love?
Since I have my own blog which has a link-love to yours and shows when you’ve added a new update I read YHL whenever it’s been updated (give me some extra hours here and there for time difference though ;)
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
Definitely the easy DIY projects because I’m always looking for ways to make my house unique and personal to my little family, and anything you can do yourself adds so much to that.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
I love your green-awareness, it’s a big reason why I’m a fan, so definitely keep up with that. Perhaps make some of your ideas a bit more universal (adding cms to the measurements, or explain a bit more about brand specific products that might not be available to, say, someone living in Holland! Over all you do pretty good at this already though, I must say.

I’m 34, French female, and I live in Nice, France, with my Danish boyfriend.
I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now, I usually read it during my lunch break at work.
My favorite posts are about DIY, tips about going green, or budget, or anything home related. I also like the before/after pictures.
Not so interested in videos, and the design dilemmas, and of course the giveaways as I cannot take part!
I like your blog a lot, it’s young, fun and full of ideas, so keep it up!
Thanks!
