…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

I’m a 32-y-o female living in the Midwest area. My family consists of my partner and 7-y-o daughter. We don’t have any pets currently. We’ve been living in our home for about five years now, and it always feels like there’s so much to do!
I read YHL every day. It’s one of the two blogs I check in with on a daily basis.
The Easy DIY posts are always fun! I enjoy the Design Dilemmas as I feel encouraged that I’m not the only one who sometimes feels clueless about what to do with a room. I have watched a couple of the videos, or at least snippets here and there, but it’s tough to watch those at work (where I spend most of my internet time). I also really like the “before and after” posts. Also, the financial posts were very helpful too, and all the comments that readers submitted!
You’re brave – asking about if you should talk about other areas of your lives more!!
Happy anniversary and I hope the upcoming year is as successful as the previous ones have been.
Lynette says
1. Who are you?
Female, 49, Philadelphia, married
2. How often do you read Young House Love?
At least daily…most of the time twice daily.
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
Design Dilemma / Before After / Reader Redesign / Easy DIY
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
a) Stop making the videos or make them more serious with better content. They are too cutesy for me (sorry)…even though they may work for your younger demographic.
b) One idea might be to give readers insight into principles of design that you use most or prefer and how those were used in the designs or pieces you suggest to solve the challenges presented to you.
c) Keep the humor and light, fun tone.
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
No thanks…I much prefer a design focus.
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
No thanks.

Wow! You have more than twice as many comments than last year so far… crazy! :)
1. Female, 22, Indiana, married, no kids, 1 dog and 1 cat
2. I read YHL every day, several times per day, during the week. On the weekends, I check the site about one time.
3. I like the before/after projects with photos and instructions, both from readers and yourself; design dilemmas; organization tips; easy, thifty, simple projects. I also like reading about your trips out and about
4. More, more, more posts. A suggestion — you often answer various questions in non-related posts, could you link there answers back to the original post?

3. I like the easy DIY ideas and the before and afters especially when they are kitchens. I would also like to see some more outdoor/ landscaping before and afters.
4. Im not really too crazy about the giveaways. I love the reader re-designs though!
5. Right now I am at a loss for what to do in our office. It looks like a room that got thrown together (it did). So office ideas would be great! Also I would love ideas for stylish ways how to hide random baby items that add up in our living room. I would also love some posts on how to display photos in the home. I feel like people who come into our house must think I am vain for just having photos of ourselves around the house. What do you think about that?

How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
I have been reading the blog for almost a year, this is only my second post. I read your blog daily, up to 2 or 3 times. I’m obsessed.
What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
My favorite posts are the DIY because they are so inspiring.
I am also a huge fan of the before & after pictures.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)nothing that I can think of right now. Just keep the posts coming.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? you got it all covered.
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!) Thanks you both are doing an amazing job. Truly love the blog and all its inspiration & helpfulness. =0)

I’m 25 and I live in Tampa, Florida with my husband and our puppy Ollie. We bought our 40-year-old house last December and you guys have been so helpful in making me feel less overwhelmed with our multitude of projects! I usually try and read YHL daily, although when work gets busy (like it has been lately!) it drops to a few times a week.
My favorite posts are your easy DIY ideas, but I also really enjoy your house-crashing posts, and of course the giveaways! Even though I have never won, I still love the products and sites that you guys find. As for what I could have less of…like some other people have said, I can’t watch videos at work so it can be a little frustrating to read the intro and get hooked, then just have a blank space where the video should be. I always tell myself I’m going to remember to check it out when I get home, but that doesn’t usually happen unfortunately! The few that I have seen I’ve enjoyed, but if there were less of them I wouldn’t really miss them.
One other thing that I wanted you to know is that I really appreciate the individual attention you’ve given to every question I’ve asked you either via comment or email. I’m so impressed that with all the time and effort you put into your mood boards, blog posts, and your own home, you’re able to respond so quickly and sweetly to any pictures I’ve shared or questions I’ve asked. Thanks for all your inspiration, you guys are great!
Rebecca says
I found your blog off a link on a friend’s blog. I have to say that your couple of posts per day help me through the work day — especially when it’s slow. But I always make time to read the blog. Blog reading in the morning has become like my newspaper reading at the breakfast table. It’s a morning ritual.
I’m just recently married and living in Denver. My husband and I, in our twenties, are first-time home buyers and I will be referencing your blog A LOT for home improvement proejcts.
My favorite posts are DIY, before & afters and house crashings. Anything to give me some inspiration for my home. I think more postings incorporating or about Burger would be awesome. I love that dogs have distinct personalities – not that cats don’t. Some more decorating ideas would be cool – like how you decorate the house for fall/spring/winter.
Keep up the great job. I almost wish you didn’t have as many readers so I’d have a better chance at winning that $500 Lowes card! But glad for all the success you’ve had!

2) I LOVE your blog and try to check in AT LEAST once a day…on really slow days here at the ol’ office, I sometimes check way more than is healthy.
3) I am pretty well interested in anything that you have to share. I use the blog as a place of inspiration as I am in the design industry and LOVE LOVE LOVE home improvement and DIY. I also just find everything very entertaining.
4) I could always use more DIY in my life.
5) I think if you posted any more about your lives I would start to feel like a bit of a creapy voyeur!
6) I would love to learn more about blogging. How do you get your giveaway items? Do you actively recruit the giveaways or do they come to you? Also, are you able to make any income off of the blog?? If so, how long did it take to do so? Any blogging advice?
Thanks so much for keeping us entertained and inspired!! Keep up the amazing work. :)

Before & after pictures– because if you like design blogs and don’t like before and afters you must be crazy.
Major home improvement undertakings– can I can live vicariously through them (currently I am in an apartment with 2 roommates, no major home inprovements for me).
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
Hmm this is a hard one since YHL has totally become my favorite blog. I guess less videos (but mostly only because I can’t really watch them at work without giving myself away)
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
I love hearing about how you two live (ie how you clean, how you store/organize your stuff, etc.)
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
Trader Joe’s Organic Oats & Flax Instant Oatmeal is fantastic (random I know, but I am just so excited to finally find an instant oatmeal that I don’t feel like I “have” to eat, but actaully can’t wait to eat.)

3. I think my favorites are design dilemma mood boards and before and afters (now I’m looking for inspiration for my outdated and relatively empty new house). Though when I started reading last year I was more interested in DIY stuff as I was fixing up an old house for sale.
4. Hmm, the only thing is that now that I have a very contemporary style house, I’d like to see more design ideas and maybe house crashing in that particular style. But since it’s not *my* blog I can’t be picky, can I? Seriously, can’t think of anything to improve!
5. Can’t think of anything.
6. I first started reading your blog after seeing your shout-out in the Washington Post. I got hooked and you guys totally saved me from going insane while I was on bedrest for 8 weeks with my pregnancy. I was fantasizing about all sorts of projects for when I could get off the couch. So none of them actually got done once the baby arrived, but that’s entirely not the point. :)

2. I try to read the blog daily, when life doesn’t get in the way. I found you a few months ago through a friend’s blog and am totally in love with your information.
3. I love the mood boards and all the before and afters. Its great to get ideas and those helpful DIY tips.
4. I love the video updates. Whether its a how-to, road trip, or answering questions. I think the videos are hilarious and are great when showing how to do hands on things.
5. I think you have a nice balance of things. You keep the posts varied so we don’t get bored…if that’s even possible.
6. I started writing a blog when we moved here to NC for the people back home to know what we are up to. I don’t think its anything the world needs to know and I do currently have it private to keep the wackadoodles out. I focus on things we do here and my food adventures in the kitchen. I’d love to send you an invite to read if you’re interested!

1. I’m 29, single male, without pets. I live in the Forest Hill area of Richmond.
2. I subscribe through Google Reader, and typically clean it out every few days.
3. My favorite posts are Before & After and renovation projects, simple or otherwise.
4. I like anything having to do with finding deals on various home accessories. Maybe more posts on your finds at local thrift stores, working sales at Big Box stores, using Overstock, etc.
Just my opinion, but the inspiration posts do nothing for me as they are. How much are is 3d-rendering software?
Maybe profiles here would allow readers who wanted to to connect? FB connect or other could allow deeper interaction, and let users share their design inspiration/deals/projects, etc.
5. Being from Richmond it would also be interesting to see a little bit more of the city in your posts.
6. Not much to plug, but I’ll say hi next time I see you around; Richmond’s a pretty small town. I’ve got a blog but besides the very rare renovation project, most of your readers wouldn’t be interested in it.

6. My blog’s kind of all over the place (mostly nerdy stories about being the supervisor of a tiny historic site in VA, proof that I am a crazy cat lady, and complaining about how I never have enough money for all the decorating projects I’d like to undertake!), but here it is: http://rareouldtimes.wordpress.com/
Keep up the great work! :-)

2) I ready YHL everyday, usually once in the AM and once in the PM.
3) My favorite posts are the ones where you show projects you have done around the house, decorating ideas (i.e. your table scapes that you’ve done, etc), and your quick and simple tips and tricks!
4) I think you guys do a great job and although I don’t always get to watching all the videos I like that new feature. I love how you edit them together, especially! I love seeing your simple and quick things- like tutorials on how to make your hanging globes on the front porch! The front porch info was some of my favorite posts from you thus far.
5) I think you guys do a great job of staying on topic, but I like how you have segued into talking about design as you come across it- i.e. not just in your house but on your trips as well. Those features are great.
6) Thanks for being inspiring! I truly feel as if your guys have just only tapped the beginning of your potential. I look forward to a TV show featuring the two of you in the near future- the design networks out there would be crazy to not consider you! And, yes, as you know I do have a blog of my own… no where near as wonderful as yours: http://amandajillsblog.blogspot.com

3. I’m particularly fond of easy DIY ideas. I hope to partake in before and afters one day.
4. I would like to see DIY advice on the functional part of the home.. tackling problems like damp basements, leaky faucets, caulking, saving energy, etc.
5. We just bought our first home a few months ago and are working on updating it. We came from a tiny Manhattan apartment so we are starting with a pretty blank slate as far as decorating and furnishing goes! If you ever take a road trip up my way, I could use your help!! ;)

26 year old female, engaged, from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
I check in about once a week.
I like the updates on your house and the unique ways you are decorating it. Seeing before and after shots are always fun.
It would be easier to see the before and after pics if they were side-by-side. Also – if you could provide insight into *how* you know what to do, or *why* you chose to do those things, that’d be great. Seeing examples is wonderful, but knowing how you came to those conclusions would help those of us who are just starting out.
Congratulations on your blogiversary!

1. Hi guys! I’m Shanna, a 29-year-old married female living in a lovely little (rented) apartment in Chicago with my husband (John) and my cat (Leroy).
2. Every day! I’ve got you on google reader (although I click through a lot, I appreciate that you send full posts to the feed rather than a snippet!).
3. I love everything! Before and after posts are probably the most interesting, it’s amazing to see a room go from blah to WOW. But easy DIY tips are great and big home improvement undertakings are fun! Video posts I tend to have to save up for when I have some time at home to watch them.
4. It would be great if more of the Reader Redesign people sent in “after” photos. Your mood boards are great but sometimes it’s hard to imagine how it will all come together in that specific room (for the less imaginative among us!) so it’s nice to see your designs put to work!
5. That’s entirely up to you! If you guys started talkig more about personal stuff I would totally read it, but keeping it a straight house-focused design blog is great too.
6. Not really! I do have a food blog that I am not extremely dedicated to (http://pantrycollective.com). I enjoy it but find that it is a lot of work! I really respect how much work you guys put into your blog and appreciate how much you do to make your readers happy. :)
