…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

So far, I like what you are doing. However, can you please add a little more of the following:
1. Add some more house crashing tours. I love looking into “real peoples” houses.
2. More of “Emily nursery projects”. For two reasons: a. I like that you are working in a new decorating style – modern.
b. It’s a room that you don’t have in your own house (or at least not yet) where you can provide some advice. How about a dorm room, an apt that is transitioning from college to adulthood, how to successfully downsize, etc..
3. More eco-friendly tips.
4. Tips on how to get thru the holidays and keep your buget in check. Gift giving ideas, decorations, and menu planning.
5. How about some more “special guest interviews”. I enjoyed the blogs you wrote about your (Sherry) brother.
6. You are always referencing “big box stores”. How about promoting some smaller independent sellers/artists like on etsy. I typically find some great items out that that are one of a kind/original at great prices.
7. More cost cutting tips. You can never get enough of them.
Dianne says
OPPSSSS 1 more thing.
8. More regular trips to IKEA and show us what you are “digging”. Everything at IKEA is cheap, with some things being “cheap and GREAT” and others being “cheap and cheap”. Help us navigate that big blue store with the “good stuff”.

3. Brand spanking new to YHL but I can tell you now I will be a frequent reader.
4. This may be to general but I love all the topics- I might not think I would be interested in design dilemas, for example, until I have one!
5. Since I just started reading I don’t know how to answer this other than to give you advice that I try to use on my own blog- keep it real. People love real people.

Anything else- Just wanted to say that I feel I can relate to your blog so much. My husband and I have had our house for 3 years now and even if we moved one day I know that no house would ever compare to it. So many memories are created doing things like learning how to hang blinds, fixing leaky faucets, and fighting over brushed metal or antique bronze finishes. As couples find their deisgn style together they can learn so much more and hopefully grow closer in the process!
Check out my story about my journey toward becoming an interior designer:) http://www.perfectlytaylord.blogspot.com Thanks!

3. I love the mood boards and advice, even if people don’t send in the “after” photos, I get so much out of the boards. And I love your paint suggestions. For me, picking the right paint color is always the hardest thing to do!
4. Maybe post more reader re-designs?
5. I would love to hear more about how you stay so organized in a small space … i.e., what do you do with all the paperwork and general “stuff” that seems to accumulate and overwhelm so quickly? I can’t keep up with it.
6. RE: no. 3 above, I decided to paint my front door the ben moore eggplant color you suggested (I have a white house, gray trim). When you suggest a paint color, I feel more confident that it’ll turn out alright. And I was right, it came out beautiful!

2. I read YHL everyday!
3. My favorite posts are easy DIY projects (like the recent lamp makeover you featured for the nursery…it inspired me to do cover the shade of a $5 lamp I found at a thrift store with fabric! I had already covered the ugly brass base with spray paint, and the fabric covered shade really made it look great). I also love anything before & after, and your detailed how-to posts for homeowners (you long post about window treatments was GREAT).
I’m not as crazy about the design dilema posts, mainly because there’s no after pictures…they feel like a tease b/c I want to see the finished product :)
4. Advice…I’m not sure I have any. Just keep up the great posts!
5. I have a blog (libbygee.blogspot.com) that I started about 4 years ago and I really got into it when my husband and I bought a 50’s rancher and started fixing it up. I posted about so many of my projects…but the biggies like our $200 kitchen remodel and refinishing the hardwood floors ourselves are finished and now I’m not feeling as motivated to blog. Of course I’m not done fixing up the house (I hope I never will be!), but I just don’t have as many interesting projects to write about. Any tips on how to stay motivated to write and how to get ideas on WHAT to write about would be greatly appreciated. I am amazed and impressed that you’ve posted something new almost every week day since you started YHL!

I read Young House Love daily and my fav posts are giveaways:) (maybe i will win someday…one in a thousand though!), videos (I enjoy seeing the people behind the words), and design dilemmas (Ijust love all things design). I wish more people would send in their “afters” when they take your advice.
The only thing I would like to see is a number beside each comment counting up so that way it is easier to refrence if I ask a question or even if just I want to know how many I have read. I would like to read a post or two on landscaping.. What grows well where? How to layer plants? What trees sprout up fastest?… just something I have been interested in lately.

1. Molly here: 26-year old native Californian married to a northeastern Vermont boy for a little over one year! Just graduated from nursing school in Pittsburgh and will be headed to officer training in Texas with the United States Army Nurse Corps in January! If we haven’t seen enough of the world already (which we absolutely haven’t) the Army is deciding where in the world to send us for our next adventure (either Washington DC, Germany or Hawaii!) with our 8-year old rescued dachshund, Barkley. Life is good.
2. I have to admit I just discovered your blog about a month ago. I don’t know how I managed not to hear about it before then (I am a self proclaimed blog-stalker, but I have been up past my eyeballs in school work the past year) but I LOVE it and it’s definitely a daily stop for me now (not to mention following you on twitter). :)
3. I actually was linked to your blog from another in regards to your wedding- I am in the process of planning my sister’s whirlwind wedding (think 27 Dresses minus the fiance drama) before I leave for the Army- so I would say that that is my favorite PART of your blog as a whole. BUT I am finding inspiration in your blog to be more ‘crafty’ everyday (‘crafty’ has never been in my vocabulary before) and make my home’s ‘befores’ more like your ‘afters.’
4. Would it be cliche of me to simply say don’t change a thing?
5. See above. Maybe some more glamor shots of Burger.

4. I love before & after’s so, along those lines, I would love to see the various stages your remodels have gone through. I picked up a couple of the DIY magazines you guys were featured in because the articles showed 3 or so pics of how your rooms progressed in stages. It gets me down sometimes because it looks like other people go from drab to fab overnight and my projects aren’t happening that way. So I found it comforting & inspiring that your rooms evolved in stages too & really enjoyed seeing how they progressed.

Midcentury ranches and how to update them (like your home), B&A, how tos (am not super handy but willing to learn so more details the better, like what kind of drill you use, etc. I also like when Sherry gets handy with power tools, I need encouragement with this.), B&A with thrifted furniture, organization tips, like Design Dilemmas but I REALLY want more B&As. Can you bribe people to get more afters? Also, thank you for providing Ben Moore paint suggestions, would you include the # too? I have an older paint deck with #s not names. Finally, I used to get home mags but stopped after they suggested too many $8,000 sofas etc. I like your practical and affordable design suggestions, sourcing items at Target, etc. I LOVE Room and Board and like that you source from them now too for Design Dilemmas.

5. Looking good on a budget. I was blown away when Sherry posted about her wardrobe and how few clothing items you have. Love your style and would love to see posts about your go-to clothing items, etc. Enjoy your posts about living simply and it seems like you have all kinds of tricks for looking good frugally (eg, learned in the video you cut your own hair, wow).
6. I wanted to tell you specifically how your blog has benefited my home: bought 4 lamps, a mirror, and a flower print after your postings about Target Design Event. Plan to paint my LR and DR with Ben Moore colors you suggested for a DD. One day, after reading a DD with a piano, I jumped up and moved my piano into the DR from the LR and the space has never worked better. Picked out a new table and chairs for DR keeping in mind your tips like not making it too match-matchy and working with the space (went with glass top table to work in a small space). Bought 4 chairs and will add additional seating when needed with a bench or ottomans which can double as extra LR seating. I also plan to hang my curtain rods higher and add either bamboo blinds or sheers. Slowly adding white accessories to give a more modern feel. Will add a 5 ft doorway into kitchen when I do a kitchen remodel, your remodel showed me how to open up kitchen to DR in a way I hadn’t considered before and it’s the perfect solution for the space.
I have always loved ranches, I love the large windows, large lots, and modern feel. Glad to find fellow fans of the ranch. Cheers!

3 and 4. Easy DIY and home make overs. I am not a big fan of the videos you guys do because they are hard to watch at work. Although, I totally followed your video on hanging pictures.
5. Budget of room make overs.
6. I think you guys rock!!!

– 23 year-old female, Ohio to NC to RVA transplant. I live with my boyfriend in the Jackson Ward (I love it when you post about local stuff!!) No kids, and super unfortunately no pets (yet.)
– Pretty much daily, on my lunch break or after work.
– I love before & afters. They are mostly why I’ve fallen in love with home improvement/reno blogs…they’re like in-depth TV shows, you get to READ and see all the awesome details! DIY’s are probably my second fav. Knowing that people like you guys are doing this stuff gives me a tremendous amount of inspiration to do it on my own.
– I wish I had some amazing advice for you, but it’s obvious you don’t need it. Congrats on your success & keep it up!!
– Idea for a post — a list of great thrift/consignment/antique/unique/cheap shops or fairs/events for home goods, sorted by location. I know you guys have readers (and family/friends) all around the US (world?), so it would be awesome to have a master list to refer to. It’d be great not only for discovering new finds in your own town, but also when traveling! The internet can only tell you so much–and the best advice is always from locals.
-And lastly, cause I gotta…I’ve started my own blog recently: http://www.alicroft.wordpress.com
Postscript: I worked for Noah at ALR earlier this year! I was so excited when I realized you knew him/had worked together!

5. you guys have great (accessible, affordable) style. I don’t know if that will translate, but it’s always nice to read about it.
6. Haha, my blog is there to save my url. Um, don’t visit? :-)

3. Design Dilemmas are my fave because I get so many ideas and inspiration from them. I also love the before & after pics and Reader Redesign.
4. Since Design Dilemmas are my fave, I want more of those. Also, I like pics and less videos.
5. Thank you for your committment to bringing affordable style on a budget to the average family. Keep up the great work!

I already responded to this, but just thought of a suggestion to improve your website. When looking back through old posts (e.g. all the Design Dilemmas) I can only see about 4 on a page, and then I have to click “next”. It makes it hard if I am trying to read through all of them, or trying to see the earlier ones (a lot of clicking!). It would be nice to be able to scroll through the whole list (or at least 10 at a time). Same goes for search results.
Hope that helps! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks so much for the suggestion Jennifer! Unfortunately we prefer having just five posts on our home page (any more and things load slowly and can even crash our site) but the same number of posts on the home page is applied to the number of search results so I’m afraid you might be stuck scrolling through five at a time for now. Here’s hoping we can figure out a way to trick the system in the future though…

1) Female, 23 years young, RVA (just on the outskirts) just a few days past 3 months of marital bliss…sometimes blisters..I kid! No kids yet or anytime in the near future, we’ve got a lot of living left to do before we really settle down but we have an adorable dog-ther Bailey aka Puddin Face.
2) I visit several times daily … I look forward to new reads and get pretty eager ;-)
3)Looovve the How-to section so…DIY posts, vids (I love em), and cool new places you two find and bargains and steals or new products and such that you both use or are using and love….good way to try new things and I trust your stamps of approval so thanks! Speaking of things you use I am loving my Envirosax bag I bought at the Shoppes at 5807
4)Honestly, not much I’d change. I like the element of surprise so to speak. I like that you are both trying to meet other local and out of town readers…..I’m in the Richmond neighborhood *hint hint* lol
5)You are both like local celebs to me. I’ve never seen you out and about but if I do I’d probably feel like you were in a big movie or something. I think that you share alot about your lives and that’s pretty awesome so I think you both do a great job at making everyone here feel like we know you as our friends.
6)Love the blog you are both fantastic and it must be an awesome feeling to inspire so many people! I do a blog but it’s pretty hard to keep up with so I can understand how this would be a full time job http://www.newfangledwonder.wordpress.com
