…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

1. Female. 27. Georgia. Happily married. No kids. 1 dog (Bella) 1 cat (Mallory)
2. Usually first thing in the morning when I get to work. I normally don’t read on the weekends because I try to stay away from the computer. I have too much else to do on the weekends!!! When I try to get online for 5 minutes it turns into 2 hours so I just try to stay away!
3. I love easy DIY ideas and anything having to do with saving money. We are on a strict budget! And your videos have been cracking me up lately!
4. I would not say less of anything. If there is a particular post that doesn’t suit me, i can just scroll past, but you shouldnt take anything away! I would love to see more little diy/crafty projects. I know how to handle most of the big projects. My problem is the little decorating ideas and how to accessorize a room. I would love to see more things like the video about setting a dining room table that you did with Katie. Maybe how to do a mantle, console table or piano, or ESPECIALLY things to hang on the walls!
Other than that, just keep doing what you are doing! I love it!!
My blog is http://vonrousehouse.blogspot.com/ and I need to update it soon!!!

2) I have it on my reader, so on average I’d say 1-3 times per day depending on how hectic the day is!
3) Love Before and Afters, DIY, money and budget issues
4) I wish we could see more of the Afters on the Design Dilemmas!
5) We’re looking for a house so any advice you could provide on that subject! Also the technical aspect of how to set up a website. I’m pretty computer savvy and do a lot of graphic design as well, but I’m just at a loss as to how to start my own website. A baby- step by baby-step article would be appreciated!

I’m a few days late, but oh well, thought I’d post anyway. Just didn’t have time before.
Meredith K. A. (since there is more than one Meredith commenting, yay! There’s not too many of us), I’m female (altho Meredith is still used as a male name in Scotland!), 26 years old, living in Shiremanstown, PA with my hubby of 2 years and soon (this weekend!) our first pet and the first dog either of us has ever owned, a 5-year-old female Italian Greyhound we’re going to re-name Juno. I’m going to knit a sweater for her, so stay tuned for those pics in a month or two! No kids yet, but we’ll probably start trying in Spring or Summer 2010 (maybe same as you!). In addition to picking up our new fur baby, we’re also doing major cleaning & organizing this weekend, so I’m hoping to finally get some decent “after” pictures on Sunday, and I hope you’ll be able to see your inspiration!
I subscribe to YHL in my Google Reader, so I see you guys every day, but usually catch up on any weekend posts on Monday. I also follow you on twitter and facebook! And I appreciate your videos on vimeo, since I can see them at work whereas youtube is blocked. I don’t worry about slipping in a short video over lunch at work!
I do end up skimming or skipping most of the long Design Dilemma posts, but I love seeing the mood boards and reading the entries for pieces I like (which is why it’s so great they’re numbered). I can’t point to a favorite, but I love a lot of your you-could-DIY-this shopping trips, other DIY ideas, and of course I adore all before-and-after photos.
The only thing I can think of that would make me love YHL even more is if I can finally win a giveaway, but I know my day will come eventually! You guys are doing a great job, definitely keep it up.
As a soon-to-be new dog owner of a pooch similar in size to Burger, I would enjoy seeing more pet-related DIYs, how-to’s, tidbits, life-with-a-pet stories, etc. Another idea I think would be helpful for me, if you can find a way to do it nicely of course, would be pointing out specific things that are not so good about a room/bookshelf/other potential area to fix up, instead of just saying what is/will be good about the improved setup. Don’t just tell us how to fix it, tell us what was wrong in the first place!
My blog is not meant to ever attract a huge audience or make money, and it’s just me blathering about random life stuff on my mind that only select family members can usually sit through, but I do love the occasional comment and making new friends! I am a math nerd, I love to sing and have been in choirs since I was five, I finally own a piano again for the first time since moving out of my parents’ house 7 years ago, I love to knit and crochet but never have enough time, my husband DIY’s most of our home improvements, and we both love to cook.
I started reading your blog in Spring of 2009 shortly before we moved into our first house, and it taught me so much about how to think about a space and make it beautiful, functional, coordinated but not matchy, bright and neutral with punches of color, etc. that I really think even though I did all the decorating myself, I have to give most of the credit to you two. You really helped me to think outside the box and to realize that even an OCD math nerd like me who likes everything to be in straight lines can tilt a chair, arrange things assymetrically but balanced, put more than books on a bookcase, embrace window treatments as more than functional…your influence has been immesurable, and even my husband likes everything we’ve done, which is high praise!
I am blessed with a great circle of friends who are mostly married couples, and the husbands and wives get along so well that we love girls’ and guys’ nights and one-big-group-party nights equally. I’m an NPR junkie, and sometimes it can feel like there’s not much nice going on in the world outside of my happy little bubble, so it’s incredibly refreshing to read about another happy, healthy couple and see the many lovely commenters from around the globe. You guys do a great job!

I like before and after pictures the best, conversations about paint colors, easy DIY, great products to buy. Keep everything the same. it’s a good balance.

1. I’m a 28-year old married woman of 17 months in Indianapolis. No kids yet, no pets ever. It’s ok, I’ll still read your blog.
2. I subscribe in Google Reader, so I check in daily, or close to it, and nearly always at work. I usually have wayyyyy too much time on my hands here, so I don’t watch the videos much. I don’t want to get flagged as a web surfer, you know. ;)
3. I like posts on easy and cheap DIY, re-purposing what we already have, I like before and after pics, and also your home cleaning segment. And I love the fact that I don’t grimace over grammatical mistakes on your sight. j/k (site)
4. Just like other people said, post more “after” photos. I’m not into pets, but you can keep posting those if they make other people happy. I like to be as cheap as possible, so show us how to make use of random, everyday stuff.
5. Being cheap and creative. :)
6. I love Richmond! I went to college in East Tennessee and had friends from Richmond. I love that huge, beautiful park with the Asian Gardens. Love it. And the really neat old downtown neighborhood that I can’t name anymore with the eclectic shops. My friend Ali bought a fiddle on a whim. I don’t think she every played it.

3. I LOVE before/after photos, and really love the how-to posts. The mood boards are always inspiring.
4. Drawing a blank. Hard to critique something I love and enjoy so much.
5. I can’t believe how much you guys share already! We’re in the same “so when ya gonna have babies??” boat, and that question bothers me for some reason. You guys must get it every day (so maybe it’s not a big deal anymore?)… but you’re so cool about it. Someday, when you do announce you’re preggers, there’s going to be a world-wide squeal of happiness for you – so maybe that’s the pay-off for having to endure the questions now. :-D
6. My husband and I are also striking out on the entrepreneurial trail with his art. He makes plush monsters, paints, and creates whatever else he feels like, and I manage the business-y side of things. You can see his stuff here: http://philbarbato.etsy.com/. Thanks for the inspiration to do what we love, and to do it together. :-)

I started reading Young House Love today. I found it from another blog. I am loving it. So far everything. The projects but mostly the pictures and stories. I love your traditions. We have our own traveling traditions. But to remember the trip we pick up something. In St. Louis, we got a small arch replica; in Nashville, we got a boot; in Alaska, I got a wooden bear; in Ashville, we got a small Biltmore. And on and on.
Just enjoy getting to know you and seeing your great ideas!

And, for fun, what’s one change you would make to your house (assuming time and money were no object)? I would love to knock out a wall between my kitchen and the family room so its one open space, take the popcorn off my ceilings, and remodel all the outdated bathrooms! Yes there are definitely time and money constraints on my wish-list!

Hi, I live in New Zealand, aged 31, owned my house for about 3 yrs.
I read most days. I just love before and afters. I don’t really read the mood boards you do for people, since I wouldn’t be able to buy anything on them here in NZ. The post I have had the most benefit from was the one about bed bugs. My sister found that she had them not long after you posted it, so I sent her the link-GROSS.
I love that you guys are cheap like me. haha. And that you are always positive. Love the BLog!!

I know this is late, but our internet was just reconnected after we bought our first house! I thought I would say hello anyway, and I hope you’re still seeing these.
1. I am a 26 year old female living in Cedar Falls, Iowa with my fiance, John, and our pet rabbit Clark. I teach 8th graders English and love it. We just bought a 1914 American Foursquare that’s in great shape, but we’re looking forward to making it our own.
2. I read YHL daily most days… it’s on my Google reader and a Richmond friend told me about you a couple months ago when we had made an offer on a house.
3, 4, & 5. Honestly, I like all the posts. I especially like the before and after pics, and the DIY projects on the website and the ones that come in daily. If there are posts I’m not interested in as much, I just skim or read more quickly. I love what you’re doing–keep it up!
6. I have a blog, but I’ve written about 4 posts, about various aspects of my life that are important to me. I had good intentions before my new school year started… but, I hope to include more about our house and our wedding plans on it as the year goes on. http://cookreaddreamwriteteach.blogspot.com
Thanks so much for all the help as we work to make our new house a home. I don’t think I would be quite so excited about painting walls and furniture if it weren’t for you. Reading about your house helps me gain confidence in working with ours, so I’ve really appreciated connecting with you, even though I tend to be a silent “lurker” on blogs without intending to. If I ever have a great before/after picture set, I’ll send it! xoxo B

3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?

4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?

5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?

Also, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for answering my rug question several months ago, by email and then by writing a whole post on it! I am still lame and haven’t bought a rug but now I feel like I know better what sort and size would work for the room. Yay!

I read this blog at least once a day, at work AND at home. Ok, I’ll tell you the truth: I check at least 10 times a day, just to read you almost on real time.
My favourite posts are about DIY ideas, “green” ideas (More Almost Doctor Dan, please!), home organization tips (I NEED your help). I also find your videos very entertaining and funny, so keep on doing!
On what concerning advice… May I suggest you to put in more eye candies and inspirational photos, so that to reveal us how do you get your fabulous ideas? (Don’t worry: I don’t want to know your dirty secrets! I’m just a hardworking girl that relies on you instead of reading home decor magazines. You are a lot more funny!). I would also appreciate more posts about living in style with pets and tips about cheap but chic living.
I really envy your fuctional home and life organization, so I would like you to talk more about this issue.
Oh, and I would like you to become our best friends. Yes, you’re very lucky since I live on the other side of the world. But if you plan to come to Italy, just let us know!

2. How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
-Daily, multiple times a day, as often as possible! At work, at home, on my phone… ;)
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
-I love DIY ideas, before/afters, big projects, little projects, mood boards, shopping tips, videos, everything.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
-Would love to see more resources for people who are shopping for things in their homes. I love how you guys always know how to find the best decorating/outlet, etc. stores wherever you are and would love tips on how to do that myself. I’m trying to decorate my entire condo (we moved in in January) and really struggle with figuring out where to go to find the right stuff. This could apply online or in certain city locales – (more excuses for you guys to road trip!)
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?

What are your favorite types of posts & why? Before and after’s. I lack a bit of imagination to have it shown to me is fantastic.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Keep doing what you’re doing!!!

I’m a bit late on commenting, but I wanted to pipe in.
Now, this criticism is meant to be constructive, really… Overall, I really love your blog. Especially the DIY and home remodeling advice. The things that don’t interest me are the more personal posts – i.e. videos about road trips or an interview about your “non-blogging” lives. A whole week dedicated to your anniversary? A week dedicated to your blogiversary? Who cares?! T-shirts? What the heck! Seriously?? Also, back when you made the transition from TYH to YHL… keeping people guessing about your “big secret” and dragging it on and on and on for how many days? I mean, COME ON! That’s when I first started to think you guys were becoming a bit self absorbed. It just grew from there, really. Keep in mind this is just a blog, and try to remember the reason people read it.
Another thing – in these parts, it’s considered poor taste and even bad luck to announce your intentions to start “trying” before you’re actually pregnant. A word to the wise – it took us 6 months to get pregnant, I’m now due in March. You should take a cue from some other bloggers who made the pregnancy announcement tastefully, i.e. All Things G&D, Making it Lovely, Urban Grace Interiors, Smitten Kitchen, etc. I’m guessing once you do get knocked up, this blog will transition to documenting your pregnancy Truman Show style, maybe with a video report from your first ultrasound. I can’t wait! ::note sarcasm::
Anyway, truly, keep up the good work with that which you do best – home improvement, remodeling and decorating. Chill a bit on the more personal stuff. I realize you have fans, but try to keep it all in perspective. Overexposure is bad. Don’t let your heads get too big, it can become distasteful really quickly and might make people not want to read this blog at all. Trust me, I’m not the only one who feels this way.
Good luck for year three.

Who are you?
Female. 23. When I started reading your blog, I was in Hunan, China. Now I’m in California. Unofficially engaged. No kids. Fostering a chubby kitty for the Humane Society.
How often do you read Young House Love?

What are your favorite types of posts & why?
Before & after pictures, hands down. I like major remodels too.

Since your home is so up-to-par after all the work you’ve already put in, some of the extra touches you’ve done in your finished rooms seems a little unnecessary. Moving your redecorating to John’s sister’s nursery was a good way to deal with that, so you could do a bigger transformation, and I liked the decorations for Halloween. Maybe you could throw some parties and do cute stuff for those the way you did for your wedding? More of the now-that-our-house-is-awesome-how-we-can-keep-flexing-our-creative-muscles.

Sara 25 from Indianapolis, IN married 2 little girls Harper (2 yo) and Ellie (5 months old). One enormous 20 lb Maincoone (Kitty). I read the blog everyday at nap time. It’s my mommy time. My facorite posts are the how to’s. We are buying our first house this year and your blog has given us the courage to tackle home projects ourselves. I also love the before and after shots. So inspiring. I would love to see more how to’s, I am so stoked for the basement. I would like to see things like, “Hate your fireplace?” Here are three ways to fix it! Or something like that. Ways to decorate for the upcoming holidays would be great as well. Oh, keep the children’s rooms coming. Love them! Thank you so very much for your dedication, it shows in your work. You give your readers confidence to invest more love in our homes. We are so so grateful. And now for my shameless plug of my own blog: http://www.urbandwellermom.blogspot.com

Married, 27yo female. The hubs and I are from Houston, TX but currently live in NYC. No kids or pets until we move back home. PS – He thinks I’m a crazy stalker when I talk about what “John and Sherry did today.”
Twice daily and as many times as you’ll post on Friday! I also pin most projects to my Pinterest for future reference.
I love the DIY ideas and the major home renos – took strict notes during the patio building. I can’t ever watch the videos at work but sometimes get those in on the weekends.
Not sure I love the shopping trips that much – I don’t like shopping so virtually walking through a store isn’t up my ally.
Not an area but could you post design plans? I know John showed the drawing of the table behind Karl but I couldn’t really conceptualize it, is it possible to have more detailed plans shared?
