…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

1. Who am I? Still trying to figure that one out… ;) But the basics: Female, 24 and 11 months today, reside in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (Kitsap County, WA), single with a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever that is my one and only baby… for now.
2. I read YHL nearly daily… I subscribe using Google Reader and always get excited when a post comes through!
3. Favorite posts… I’d have to cheat and say “all of the above.” I’m a new home owner and I am itching to start redecorating so any inspiration, tips, advice, etc is awesome… on a budget, of course. (Being single also means single income!)
4. Advice: Don’t know if I’m qualified here… I guess just stay true to who you are, and keep it fun for yourselves! Your enjoyment comes through in your posts and makes it more fun to read and follow as you tackle new projects!
5. Other topics: …
6. Other: I do have a blog! Although I’m not as good as I would like to be about posting on a regular basis. It’s pretty random: bits of photography, some creative cooking, misc projects, and I’m sure to have more home projects now that I own a house! I also like to post about my pup. He’s kind of cute. :) missarahlou.wordpress.com

I follow thru Google so I check in when I see a new post.
I love the DIY and before/afters. I agree with another poster about providing more “in-use” photos to see the space activated. I love entertaining, so maybe more related posts? Party ideas? I also love when guest bloggers are featured on other blogs. Keep up the great work!

4. How about some ways to personalize new construction homes. Or maybe some inexpensive DIY landscaping tricks?

Thanks for the opportunity for input. I am so motivated to try a bit more change in my living environment after seeing what you and others you show case are doing.
I am a married, 56 yr old mom of two 20 yr olds from the north west with no pets currently.
I check in every day or so from home.
My favorite posts are the before/after, explanations for DIY,and the home tours. I hope you have lots more tours planned.
I hope you do more on how to recycle old stuff, and explanations on why you use certain products, ie primers, etc, abd certain tools. Please more use of color explanations/experiments.
I enjoy hearing about life with Burger. How you make time for all the fix it stuff, and what about maintenance to keep everything looking just finished.
It might interest you to know that we rent, and have limitations on things we can change, but renters still need to personalize their space and have the same need for color and organization and beauty. I get lots of inspiration from your site even though I do not own my home.

2. I read whenever a post pops into my Google Reader (so I guess, daily), or if I need a lil break @ work (YHL doesn’t get blocked…shhh).
3. I love before & afters, especially the ones following design dilemmas. Nothing like seeing an idea come to life!
4. Hmmm.. can’t think of anything at the moment..
5. I’d love to hear about your photoshop tips, been meaning to ask you guys about how you did your save-the-date invites..

3. Favorite types of posts: I love the easy DIY projects that I can take on myself at home and the posts about your favorite stores (Ikea, Anthro., etc) with pictures of the great finds. Design dilemmas and before & afters are great also.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Organization! It’s a problem I have, so I love to see new ideas.
Love it!

I love love love before and after pictures and I love the diy’s. I wish there were more after pictures of your reader design delemas but I’m not sure you have much control over that! But I’m not a huge fan of video because I’m usually not in a place where I can watch them.
I like that you throw in bits of personal info, but that you mainly stick to house stuff. I think you’ve got just the right balance of it being a site about houses and design, etc without feeling like a corporate marketing tool.
Keep it up!!! I wish you the best in the year to come!

I love to see before & after pictures, especially when they are so simple (and not large-scale renovations). So for me, it’s easy DIY all the way. I’ve really been enjoying the videos, too!
I love the how-to section and any money-saving tips!

1. Female, southwestern Ohio, married, no pets but 2 animal-like boys!
2. daily if I find a moment
3. LOVE house-crashings, store-crashings and design dilemmas. As much as I enjoy looking through home decor magazines (it could be my job) for inspiration, I would rather see a REAL home where families live. The ideas you give on products from inexpensive, accessible stores are great. I like the design dilemmas bc there is usually at least one element of the dilemma that I have and can use your advice on too!
4. More housecrashings and storecrashings please! I love seeing homes really being used while still looking stylish. I live in my home, well, to LIVE in it not to look at it. Your home always looks so fresh yet liveable at the same time. Less videos but that’s just me personally.
5. I’m looking forward to the day when you post about juggling home decor and children… all in good time.

3. I love the before and afters the most. Also all the DIYs.
4. More tutorials would be nice. Also more before and afters. I have some I need to submit to you and I hope more people will do the same.
5.I would also be curious more about how your blog evolved and how you got to the point you are at now. Like when did you decide for Sherry to quit her job and blog full time, etc. Where do you see yourself in the future? Do you always plan to blog full time? Do you ever run out of stuff to blog about or projects to do?
6. I have a blog too I started a few months ago to document all the DIY projects we are always working on. I wish I had more time for blogging.

1. Female, 31, Southern California, Married, own a condo, no kids yet, 2 cats.
2. I found your great site about 3-4 weeks ago and have since read it daily.
3. I prefer to read articles and look at photos than to watch videos. I especially like your “How To” articles. Your website is so well organized, I can always find something new and informative to read. I love the concept of the design dilemmas but get frustrated that most people do not post “after” photos!
4. Your site is the best of its kind. I wouldn’t change much about it. Just keep up the excellent work. I’m worried that you will run out of diy projects though. Maybe you could start featuring more projects at other houses (like the nursery at John’s sister’s house).
5. I think you should keep your blog focused on what you do best. No need to branch out to talking about other areas.
6. I’m impressed and inspired! I no longer feel like my own home improvements are insurmountable. Thanks!

3. I enjoy the before/afters, and of course your wedding week posts since they came right when I was starting to plan mine! I also enjoy your DIY/budget ideas.
4. Maybe some more rent-friendly ideas for those of us who don’t own homes yet – ways to liven up a space without altering it too much, etc. (However, now thinking back, you do offer up bunches of tips that could work in apartments, so keep it up!)
5. Someone further back mentioned exercise and meal routines, it would be interesting to see a few of those. You did some personal finance posts awhile back that were fantastic, too – it’d be great to see you touch on that now and then.
Thanks for all your hard work here, this blog is fantastic! Definitely one of the first ones I go to every day on my feed :-)

3. I think my favorites are anything that posts a before and after–I LOVE change and I’m obsessed with the pretty. I also really, really love your style boards. The helpful hints/tips/etc. are a close second.
4. I think the only thing that I crave from YHL (that I’m not already getting) is more posts! Sometimes one a day just doesn’t feed the hunger!
5. I’m pretty ok with what you talk about now, but I haven’t watched your latest video yet! SO I reserve the right to retract that statement.
6. I don’t have a blog, but I’m a fantastic story teller. I probably should start a blog, but I doubt anyone but me would look at it…and thus the reason I haven’t done it.

4. More pictures of things you tried that didn’t work or didn’t look right!! I learn alot from the pictures of your successful projects, but I think it would be even more informative to see a color combo or a project you tried but decided didn’t work in the space.

Read your blog almost daily- its kind of an addiction. But I have to do it in-between nap times…so sometimes I miss a day.
I like DIYs and Before and Afters. Especially the Before and After design dilemmas solved.
I would like to see a new spin on the design dilemmas. I have a big dilemma in my bedroom, but I refuse to buy anything to redo it- but am uninspired with what I have. I would love to send you a photo of all my pieces and you tell me how I can change them (i.e., paint them, rearrange them, recover them) without spending money on new things. Times are tough and there is way too much waste to not use what I have. I just need help in how to breathe new life into old things.
I am loving reading your blog and trying to write my own about living more simply and reusing what we have…anurbanfarmwife.blogspot.com But man- an 8mos old is hard work so I don’t get to blog as much as I would like!

What are your favorite types of posts & why? easy DIY ideas, before & after pictures, major home improvement undertakings, videos. I like these because they give me “immediate gratification”.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I think you have a great thing going just like you are doing now! I love how you post often. It is exciting to see a new post pop up.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? I think it is neat when you share your personal sides (great video, by the way). I think that people truly love your blog, ideas, and feel like they would like to know you as “real people”.

3) love before and after pics, and any DIY project, big or small
4) only change I would make, is post before and after pics with your mood boards of readers design delimmas. I realize you’re advertising the products you suggest in the mood boards, but I have a hard time visualizing your mood board ‘in’ their house, and I sort of gloss over those posts. If I could see the before and after pics, then I could see how they use the items in your boards, in their house, and maybe how I could use something in my home. Is that as clear as mud?
Love all of it, you guys are great!!!!!

2. I read Young House Love when I first get to work, right before lunch and about 3pm every day.
3. My favorite posts are Mood Makeovers to get furniture/color inspiration, decor ideas (such as the mason jars Sherry used to store souvenirs/relics from trips) and before/afters.
4. I love the videos but can’t watch at work, so less of those in lieu of regular entry would be nice.
5. How did you choose Richmond, Burger, etc.?

4. While I enjoy the Design Dilemmas, it feels like they’re getting a bit predictable. I’d love to see more details about your solutions, i.e. space planning, budgets, and a step-by-step look at what goes into the solution, from the time you receive the request to the time you create the design board. I’d also like to see you encourage the use of more unique art (including DIY projects to be used as art), and explore the option that art shouldn’t necessarily be bought to match the decor.
5. Do you ever have design “failures” or dissatisfied clients, and if so, how do you deal with it? Do you plan on getting any formal instruction in design? I’d also love to see more of your hands-on redesigns (like the nursery).
6. That’s all! Keep up the good work.

2. I read multiple times a day (when does it signify a problem?!)
3. I love before and after. I look at your after pictures of your home all the time. I also like tips…like the cleaning post you recently did. Or, when you state favorite products or places to shop.
4. More before and afters. More favorite things. I enjoy the “digging” items.
5. I love that your blog is young and fresh. I love that you make decorating accessible. I’m also addicted to HGTV but sometimes I find their decorating shows a little out of my reach financially. You incorporate low end and high end pieces to make things look sophisticated…but still keep to a budget. For example, personally I hate the show “Design on a Dime” because I think everything looks like it was designed on a dime. I don’t need you to make a lamp shade out of a placemat. I love how you put things together…from all different outlets. I also love that your style seems to appeal to a wide audience. You both are great writers too…makes it that much more enjoyable to read. I hate reading blogs where people can’t string two words together.
Ok, time to get off my soapbox. Great job!!!

5. Wacky idea – a monthly post about an animal needing adoption through a local rescue group? Richmond has a lot of them! I know you’re animal lovers and was thinking you could use your “fame” to lend a tiny hand in that way. But I also know it’s not the theme of the blog – so might not be the best idea.

Thanks for the inspiration!
