…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

1. Who are you? I’m Shannon…female 29 Years Old, Married for 3 years with a snobby cat Sebastian
2. How often do you read Young House Love? Daily, sometimes multiple times a day, I try to do as little work as humanly possible
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why? Love Before and Afters and Reader Redesigns…and Giveaways
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I envision you guys as like the Real Simple magazine of home bloggers. I like how you touch on so many different house-y related topics. I’d say to keep moving in that direction…organization, cleaning, stuff like that. Plus, I vote more Katie Bower & maybe some guest blogging?
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Nope, I’m happy with whatever I can get.
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? I’ve got a little blog of my own Shannanigans ( http://shannonsswell.blogspot.com ). It’s kinda random, but it’s documenting my life with the hub, our friends and fam, our 89 year old house and anything in between. Plus, I like to think I’m pretty funny. Well, I make myself laugh so that’s all I need.
Keep up the amazing work!

2. I now read YHL everyday, although I just found out about this site last week so the past 7 days-everyday.
3. I really enjoy the easy DIY ideas because I’m constantly looking for ways to make changes & mix things up without spending a lot of $ or time or wasting what I’ve already purchased. I also enjoy your organizing posts because I strive to have the “everything in it’s place” home, but it’s a work in progress, so I love the storage ideas etc..
4. Hmmm..I say keep doin what you’re doin. Again, being somewhat of a new reader, I don’t know how much has changed the past couple of years, but so far, what I’ve read seems informative, entertaining & doable. So keep at it.
5. I would like to know more about how you get ideas, what’s your inspiration for rooms/mood boards etc. I know just looking at your pictures on this site inspires me, so I’m curious to know what does it for you.
6. I LOVE CHEESE!! :)

1. Female, Age 35 in Baltimore, MD. Married to my hubby for almost 6 years. No kids yet (but we get those questions like you Youngsters, too.) No pets yet, but scoping out small dog breeds. I grew up with pets, hubby’s mom finds pets “intrusive”, so he never had one. He is dying for a little fluffy dog.
2. Whenever I have free time at work.
3. Before/After pictures, Design Dilemmas, money saving tips and product reviews (cleaning supplies, small appliances, etc.) are my personal favorites. I have taken advantage of your amazon shop based on your buying/testing experiences. Thanks a million on behalf those that don’t mention it to you!
4. Had an idea for a regular feature: “Passing the Hat for Tips” Introduce a topic of specific household problem solving (submissions from readers?) and ask others to contribute what has worked for them. Sample question ideas: “How have you gotten your dog to stop chewing wood furniture?” “What is best Green way to clean tile grout?” “What species of summer tomato grows best in your region (specify region of US/Canada)?”
5. More cooking ideas/recipes that save money would be a nice bonus every now and then. It could easily tie in with your garden posts. Maybe also a seasonal frugal recipe contest where readers could test the recipes themselves then vote for a grand prize winner?
6. Love to browse other blogs in your “Link Love” section!

3. Easy DIY projects. I like before & after pics as well. Videos I rarely check out and Design Dilemmas are sometimes ok, sometimes not my taste/budget.
4. Less Design Dilemmas. They are interesting but I rarely take the time to read/click through the whole thing. I also would like them better if they had the “after” photos!
I’d like to see more posts on Organic Living & living on the cheap. I love the DIY makeovers such as painting a chair, a door, etc. Would love to see more posts on organizing and living in an organized home (your previous ones have been so helpful!)

2. You’re on my blogroll and I check at least twice a day during the work week.
3. Hands-down, I love the easy DIY posts. The ‘how to paint furniture’ post inspired me to get a desk from Salvation Army and redo it. I was so proud of it that I sent you guys an email with the pictures and you totally emailed me back! So freakin awesome! :-) It totally made my day and gave me courage to try my hand at other projects!
4. The video you just did that talked about your ‘real life’ was so cute! More of those please! Also, we have an older house like you do and I eat up the organization posts – do you have something on linen closets? I’m sure you must… but anything that sheds light on storage solutions/making more of small closets etc would be most helpful.
5. What about dog stuff? I know Burger is small but small dogs can still wreak havoc. How do you/have you trained your dog not to destroy your pretty things?

1. Who are you?
Female, age 34 (almost 35, yikes!), NC, serious relationship, no kids and no plans for any, two cats.
2. How often do you read Young House Love?
At least daily (sometimes I check a couple of times to see if anything new is up because I’m just that neurotic.
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why? I really love the before and after pictures, easy DIY ideas, and major home improvements. You also used to have some posts every so often with great finds you saw online. Those were nice.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I really wish there were more before and after posts (though I recognize that you really do have a lot — I’m just greedy). I don’t tend to care about the videos only because I’m at work and while I don’t feel bad about surfing the web, for some reason as soon as I’m watching videos, I feel like I’m doing something horribly wrong (that stupid work ethic).
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? I read a few wedding and relationship blogs and I have to say y’all seem to have a really solid relationship so I like hearing personal stories about the two of you and how your relationship works.
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? Nope — just that I love your site and for some reason am still amused that you were so threatening to a certain home renovation show that you had the change the name of your blog.

3. Before & after pictures. And How-to stuff. I wasn’t a fan of the videos at first, but they are beginning to grow on me.
4. Don’t like the “discussion” topics. Feels like a cop out. I would love to see more house crashing. maybe commenting articles in all those Magazines you read.
5. I would love to hear more about you lives as pet owners. But I am a new pet owner…so that may not appeal to everyone. Also,How do you save money, ways to be thrifty, etc. What do you do for fun? Maybe some Richmond cultural stuff. Like places you like to eat/shop. Etc. Even though I am not in Richmond, I find other city’s culture fun. Kinda like what you did with Nashville.

free time at work, so…daily :)
What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
I love the easy DIY ideas and before/after, and painting snafu fixes. Also, fun organizational ideas (jewelry, kitchen, etc). Crap. Honestly, I love it ALL. You know what else I love? That J and S take time to let us get to know them personally, and show us their personalities (which we love!) instead of just ‘here’s how to do this.’ It gives your blog PERSONALITY which is lacking in so many these days. Also, I love that you take time to respond to readers. That just adds to the personalization and shows you really care about your readers. THANK YOU.

Easy DIY projects…the home we recently purchased has great bones, but was built in 1963, which was also the last time it was decorated. To make YHL better this year I would like to see less of the design dilemmas. I don’t mind the before and afters, but I just skip right past any design dilemma post. I am only trying to be helpful, I still love you guys!
I love you guys…you remind me so much of my husband and I. We also have an old ranch style house and have been busy fixing it up over the last couple of years.

-I really love a good before and after. I am remodeling my old house too and I have gotten so much inspiration from y’all (Just like my bamboo blinds and Ikea Curtains you featured as a post a few months back!)
-My favorite are DIY tips, Organizing, Before and Afters- i love them all though! Y’all are more helpful than you know!
-If you could talk about your grocery budget- I would love that. I cook every night and make everything from scratch, so it gets expensive. I know John cooks too- any suggestions on budgeting with food??

5-Planning to build a home in the coming year. Having a very tough time deciding on home style, interior floor plans and decor. Example: MCM vs Bungalow; decorate to the architecture of the home or veer (somewhat) from that. So how to decide when torn between two options.
Loved the posts with all the tips from Sherry’s brother. Made some changes in the household because of that. Thank you.

6. My blog’s kind of all over the place (mostly nerdy stories about my job as the supervisor of a tiny historic site in VA, and me complaining about how I don’t have enough money to do all the decorating projects I would like :-P), but here it is: http://rareouldtimes.wordpress.com/

4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I love seeing how you (and others) work with older homes that aren’t as “flexible” in terms of design friendliness.
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Nope, just keep doing what you’re doing…

1) Meredith, Female, 27, Des Moines, IA (represent!), Single (although judging by the overwhelming way your comments are skewing, perhaps I am the only one?), No Kids, No Animals
2) Daily (it’s a bit of a problem)
3) I really like it all; mood boards are my least favorite and I enjoy before & afters; I really like it when you do highlights from a big project and then eventually show the whole thing (e.g. the porch, what you’re doing now with the nursery).
4) You guys are doing great!
5)I did really like your series on how you budget/manage finances; I would be interested in reading more of that.
6) No blog for me. :)

4. Not a huge fan of the videos, but that’s me. LOVE all the rest!
5. I’ve always thought you were very open, considering what a big, wide world it is out there. Do what you’re comfortable with.
6. When the YHL Baby arrives, which bedroom are you planning on revamping into a sweet nursery? :)

2. I am on YHL multiple times a day!! I LOVE IT!!
3. My absolute favorite posts are Before/After pics and Design Dillemas. I just moved into a new apartment and am starting from scratch, so I’ve pulled alot of inspirations from the wonderful work done in those posts! I’ve also gotten alot of ideas from the DIY things – I just decided today that I’m going to make one of those headboards but hang it in my living room as fabric art!! :)
4. I wouldn’t change a thing!! You guys and this site are perfect just the way you are!!
5. Again, everything is great, but I would love to see ideas for people in apartments. I’ve emailed Sherry a bunch and she’s given me some great ideas to work with, but I would love to see more of it on here. I have just been taking ideas from different things and making them apartment-friendly. Trust me, I would go nuts if I was allowed to paint and knock down walls hehe :D
6. Just wanted to say that you guys really are great! I read this blog every day and feel like I know you. You are definitely the kind of people I would love to hang out with! Keep up the amazing work! :)

1. Steven & Ally are both 25 and are male and female, respectively. (but Ally is the one who does all the updating on our blog and checks YHL daily) We are married and live in the DFW area (too bad we didn’t run in to you during your last road trip – boo!) with our sweet son, Jackson, who is 10 months old. We have a cat named Maru. Fun fact: Both Jackson and Maru were born in Japan!
2. We have a link to your website on our blog (haynesfamilytx.blogspot.com), so we check YHL whenever you update! Which is pretty much daily.
3. I (Ally) am a sucker for before & afters! I love the instant gratification! But, since we just bought a house, the DIY tutorials would be the most useful for us in the coming months.
4. Who am I to give you advice?! Ya’ll are doing such a great job on your own…. my blog certainly doesn’t get thousands of hits a day! :) I would love your ideas on style with children/babies in mind. Maybe suggestions of what kiddie stuff fits in with adult decor? Jackson’s corner of the living room is very BRIGHT in comparison to our taste. Maybe you should have a baby just for this purpose (haha, kidding!)
5. Show us your vices!
6. already plugged my blog once… :) great job! keep it up!
