…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

2. Daily
3. I like before and afters, and house crashing. I also like the easy DIY projects. The mood boards are good, but would love to see more of the actual before and afters (I realize you have no control over that, however). Loved your recent nursery re-do.
4. More house tours/house crashing! Maybe interested readers could offer to tour you through their homes. Also, less advertising/product placement. I know you have to have sponsors to make a living on your blog–an endeavor that I think is admirable–but don’t like feeling like I’m being “advertised to” in the posts themselves.
5. I really like the focus on “green ideas.”
6. Thanks for the great info and entertainment!!

2. At least once a day but I have to wait to log on at home for the videos.
3. Before & After, Design Dilemmas and DIY are my favorites. Giveaways my least favorite (because I never win).
4. Seems like you guys are doing everything right!I love the clean look of your home. And although my style is not quite as clean and contemporary I can appreciate yours and you give me great ideas for DIY projects. Believe it or not, after living in our home 23+ years we are still doing things to it. Maybe not as glamourous as what you do (new roof, new HVAC, new water heater) but it seems like there is always something you can do and improve on even if it is just an organizing idea.
5. More Burger! Actually, pet proofing would be great.
6. nada
Megan says
1. Who are you? Megan, female, age 29 (for 3 more months, ugh), in Columbus, OH, Just married this past June, 2 step-kids, and searching for the perfect dog!
2. I read several times a day–I love that you post every day, more than once.
3. My favorites are the before & afters and the easy DIY posts.
4. Suggestions for improvement are tough since your blog is already so great. But, maybe there’s a way to offer discounted mood boards in exchange for an obligation to provide after photos? I wish more people would do that–although I know you can’t control it. I would also love to hear some reviews of products that you recommend for people because I’m always concerned about cost vs. quality. I am skeptical of some of the cheaper furniture and want to see if it stands up to kids and will last the test of time.
5. I don’t know if you are planning on it or not, but I am interested to see how your life/home changes as you add kids to the mix. As a new step-parent (insta-family) of a 4 and 6 year old a lot of the hopes for how I wanted my home to look have flown out the window. I’m sure you’ll handle it with style and hopefully you’ll share it all with us.
6. As a side note–I found your blog through $2000 Wedding and I was so inspired by your day for my own. Thank you!

Who are you? – Female, 31, Charlottesville, Va. Not married but in a long term relationship(6 years) and yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ll get married eveevtually if everyone stops asking!! :) No kids, three cats.
How often do you read Young House Love? – Daily when I can, but usually more like three times a week. I’m closing on my first house next week (a fixer upper) and it’s become a bit of an obsession (if anyone can understand that, it’s you).
What are your favorite types of posts & why? My new home looks a lot like yours (like it used to, that is) so my favorite posts are the ones about the work/decorating you’ve done on your house in particular.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? You can’t write too many posts about choosing paint color!
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? I’d like to see more about regular home maintenance (pardon me if you’ve done this and I missed it) – how often you clean gutters, change filters, check batteries, etc. I’m planning to have some projects done professionally(they’ll do the big stuff and I’ll fill in the rest), do you have advice on choosing plumbers, contactors, electricians, etc.?
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? Thanks and keep up the good work!

4. Keep it up with the Easy DIYs and Before & Afters. I love looking at house porn with laundry rooms that are bigger than my entire apartment, but when I’m looking for real life inspiration I need to know how to spruce up my crappy laundry area with bamboo blinds from walmart.
5. I love what you guys are doing already. Seriously, I follow 185 blogs in google reader and you guys are easily top 3 :D

4. Love the design boards. I realize they’re really time consuming so you can only do so many, but keep em coming please! Plus, more afters people!
5. I think I know more about you than most people I meet at this point, so I guess you’re doing a good job on that front ;)

4.What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Keep doing what you are doing! Would love to see more “afters” from the boards you create for people (though I’m sure that’s beyond your control!)
5.Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? More about how you plan/prioritize your projects. Would be cool if you had a yearly to-do list that we could click on and see how it goes for you. I’m a list girl, what can I say!

5. Well – it’s a home improvement blog … Anything else would probably be deferring from that and giving away more of your life than you’re willing to give.

5. Nope. I may be the odd one out, but I read more for the content, less to learn about the authors (no offense).
6. I found you looking for tips on painting furniture, and am now most of the way through painting my third-hand dining set black. It will look great (but fyi, it takes forEVER to paint Windsor chairs with spindles).

3. I love all of the before & after pictures, it gives me hope that someday my house will look more like an after pic :) i also enjoy the home management posts (ie. ways to save $, where you keep all of your bills/assorted papers that seem to pile up in my house) The videos are great, but I can’t see them at work, so I always have to remember to check at home.
4. Since we’re in the middle of rennovating & trying to purchase furniture, I think it would be helpful to have compilations of your favorite items. Like coffee tables, sofas, kitchen tables, headboards, etc. I try to use the moodboards, but they don’t always match what we’re looking for. (My husband is all about real well made wood products, which are hard to come by at a decent price these days!)
Overall I love the blog & everything you guys are doing! Keep up the good work :o)

I ~heart~ before and after pictures. I really love your mood boards, too. I never look at the videos. I’m sure they are good, but sometimes I check things out at work.

4. Pester those you’ve given design ideas to to send in after pictures more often! I have a hard time visualizing what a room will look like when I just see the pieces that will become a part of it. I mean, you’ve obviously done well with your site…I would just say, not too much of the before pics and boards (sorry but I don’t really relate to these as they aren’t ever much more than picking items out of a catalogue) speaking of catalogues….I love when you feature the spreads! congrats on being in them

I read Young House Love every couple of days. I love to decorate and right now we are making over our own new home. I follow a few design blogs to see if they have come up with some new things out there and find inspiration.
Before & After’s are my favorites! There are always so many great ideas hidden into the mix to grow, expand on and make fit your own space. :)
I think you guys do a great job and should keep it up! Although, i think it would be cool if you could do a little bit of focus on apartment re-decorating. There are a lot of things you aren’t allowed to change when living in an apartment. I am now in my own home and can do whatever I want but that was always frustrating for me because I would see such cool things and I could never do them to my own space! :)
Check out my blog to meet my dogs and see my home transform! http://jenni-helloworld.blogspot.com :)

How often do you read Young House Love? Whenever I have time at work and when I can on the weekends, too. And I have you on my FB to catch your updates. :-)
What are your favorite types of posts & why? Love them all. Before and after pictures, small projects, major ones, freebies (you have great ones!) I don’t watch all the videos b/c I ususally check the site on my blackberry when I get a chance at work and it is kind of a pain to watch on there.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Hmmmm…..everything is great. I wonder if maybe expanding your ‘design dilemma’ offerings for smaller projects as well. Maybe someone doesn’t need the whole ROOM makover for the full price, but some advice for a smaller fee. Such as – ‘what kind of art/decoration would you recommend for this wall’ or ‘what kind of couch/chair/etc. would you suggest for this room’. Different levels of design advice/

What are your favorite types of posts & why? probably before and afters and easy DIYs bc they really inspire me!!
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? Umm maybe if there was a way to forcefully require people to send in ‘after’ shots of the mood boards you send them?! Just kidding! Honestly the more of any kind of posts, the better for me!
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? You guys are too cute, just keep up your usual act!
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? You guys have really transformed how my husband and I will approach buying our first home. 2. I read every time you post! You’re in my reader and I’m online all the time, so I catch everything you write, often within minutes of posting.
3. I love pretty much all of your stuff! My favorites are probably the Design Dilemmas, because I love seeing what you come up with and cool new things to add to my wish list. I also enjoy the posts on cleaning and organization because those are things that I struggle with. I’m not wild about the videos, just because I always have trouble loading them (Vimeo and Youtube both work for me, they’re just really slow…but that’s more my problem than yours).
4. More of the same! And hurry up and have a kid so we can see some “organizing and cleaning with kids” posts (lol).
5. Maybe time management. I’d really like to know how each of your days work…where do you find time to blog, workout, clean, hang out with friends, that sort of thing. Basically a little bit of how your life works – because you seem to have it so together!
6. You guys are doing great! I don’t have a blog (yet) but I hope to one day. I have lots of ideas for one, but I don’t feel ready to commit to it yet. :o)

I also like the product recommendations because I trust your opinion and feel like you’ve done the leg work for me! There’s nothing worse than spending money on something that doesn’t do the job!
4.Have fun & keep doing what your doing! Your site offers so much inspiration and information. Since I have kids, I would be interested in more ideas for kids rooms.
5.You seem to have a good mix of topics.

4) Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t let them pressure you into having a baby!
5) Mmm… more hosting stuff I guess.
6) There is no blog out there like yours. Truly. The way you guys take so much painstaking time to answer every single question, even questions people ask repeatedly that they could easily find the answer to on your blog (there is a giant source list for gods sake!) is amazing. It would drive me nuts but your patience is incredible and your time, so generous. Clap. Clap.

2. I read the blog at least twice daily. Whenever I think you might have posted something new!
3. My favorite posts are DIY ideas, home improvements, house crashing, and videos
4. Burger videos! And I love posts about easy home improvement ideas that anyone can do, so more of that would be good. Also your organization tips are great.
5. The wedding album is my absolute favorite thing on the blog, so party or event details would be great to hear about.
6. No blog, but I love reading them and yours is my favorite. Keep it up!

2. How often do you read Young House Love? Just about daily.
3. I love before and afters and the big remodels, My computer can’t handle the videos very well even if I let them load first. I love the Design Dilemmas, but I have a hard time visualizing the end result from the idea board you post.
As a designing challenged person, I love your blog! It’s been inspiring and fun to read. Thanks.
Oh, and I have a cat named ‘Tater! Cracks me up when I read about Burger.

1. Hayley, female, 22, Utah, married, no kids, no animals.
2. I read your blog as often as you post!
3. I like before and afters the best, because I get to see style ideas put into reality, not just an idea on paper.
4. I like the idea of design dilemas, but usually skip over them, cause pictures of furniture and color squares don’t translate well to real life decor to me.
5. I’d love to know how you find things to incorporate in your house, or in the design dilemas. Do you google “chic white sectional” and find the perfect couch, or do you just shop at your fav stores, like Ikea, all of the time to keep it fresh in your mind for a design idea?

2. I read your blog daily, it’s one of the firsts I always check, y’all are so cute and I admit that I always like to see what cute clothes/earrings/accessories Sherry is wearing. I hope that doesn’t weird anybody out.
3. I’m all about seeing a problem and seeing how it’s addressed. So Yes, Beore & After picture me up. I also like reading about your organizing ideas and loved the simple farmer’s market salsa post y’all did a few weeks back.
4. aw man, i don’t have much. pretty much my only reason for commenting was to offer y’all more positive reinforcement to keep doing what you’re doing…BUT sometimes i’m a wee bit disappointed when I see “so and so’s design dilemma” with no after picture. perhaps you could save posting the new client project posts until they’ve redone their rooms and provided a picture. besides that i’m very satisfied with your blogging.
5. I hear John does a lot of cooking…maybe feature some cool meals he’s whipped up once in a while.
6. I do have a blog…I’m sometimes bad about posting regularly, but try to make at least one post a week at http://cappuccinochitchat.com

2. How often do you read Young House Love?
Daily! I recently subscribed through Google Reader so now I can see when new posts come through, which makes me very very happy!
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
DIY projects (great for those of us on a budget), House Crashing, Before & Afters. I LOVE seeing other people’s actual homes or makeovers…it’s great inspiration & fun to get a peek into the beautiful homes of others.
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
You seem to be doing a fantastic job already, so just keep up the great work!
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
The posts on organization are really helpful. I also like Chrissy’s suggestion above on more posts related to party planning/ideas/décor…can never get enough of that & you seem to have a great sense of budget-friendly style. I really like the guest bloggers too since I’m always up for a good new blog to check out. Althoug, my husband would say my current blog list is already ridiculously long.
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
We moved to Ft. Lauderdale for my husband’s work this summer & have been trying to sell our house since February…hard times for the housing market! Everyone who follows YHL, please keep your fingers crossed that get a buyer eventually. It’s a beautiful, terrific home (our first) & we really hate to let it go!

5. I love hearing about the random quirks of Burger!!
6. I would be interested in seeing how you started the blog and got it to be the success it is today. I really want to start writing a blog but I don’t know where to start – and I don’t know if people would actually read it.
