…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

4. Keep up the good work! :) You could do more product reviews maybe?
5. nope.
6. I think you’re great! Also, (insert shameless plug here): here’s my blog – http://www.homeinthecountry.wordpress.com. I’ve been talking about our recent 1-year-later honeymoon in Ireland, but we’ll resume our usual home improvement shenanigans by the end of the week. :)

Who are you? I am female, married, in my late 30’s I am a free-lance writer who tries to work from home without endlessly reading all the wonderful decorating blogs all day. I have three children ages 12, 8, and 5
How often do you read Young House Love? I check in daily, but if I’ve missed a few days I am thrilled to have several posts to catch up with
What are your favorite types of posts & why? I like all your posts-although the mood boards make me green with envy ;) I love the before and afters and the reader redesign-I have one of my own to send in one of these days
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
hmmmm… I can’t think of anything except stay true to the wonderful way you are-so many blogs become nothing but advertising. You guys have a great mix of personal stuff, projects, giveaways, projects-you get the idea.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Can’t think of one!

3. LOVE Before & after pictures and easy DIY projects!!
4. I honestly can’t think of anything constructive other than maybe more videos of y’all actually doing some projects…I know that would be hard. But you could speed it up like you did the garage cleaning project.
5. I think y’all are doing great!

1. Destine, female, 24. Currently Birmingham, Alabama and engaged, but in one month will be married and moved to the burbs of Chicago! Also have a maltese/lhasa apso mix and will be inheriting the new hubby’s beagle/huskie mix :) Oh, and no kids. I’m with you on waiting til it’s the right time, and enjoying our time together first!
2. Ummm more than once a day? hah, checking to see if a new post came up. I don’t even follow blogs, and I can’t even remember how I came across yours, but I’m addicted.
3. I love easy DIY ideas, before and afters, and video posts because they’re so entertaining. We will be renting a house, so we can’t do any fun remodeling yet, but I love major home improvements as well (good for future inspiration)!
4. Keep doing what you’re doing! You guys are great!

3. My faves are the videos, the reader redesigns, and the makeovers you all do.
4. Keep the videos coming! You guys are such a charming couple and I think your readers probably appreciate seeing your interaction and being able to relate that back to your posts.
5. I think you’ve found your groove. You do a great job of letting your readers in just enough to make your blog personal while hopefully maintaining enough of the “sacred” so that you don’t feel too exposed. You don’t want to put it all out there!
6. Keep up the good work!

1. I’m am an attorney in NC – I’m married (going on 5 years) and we have a beautiful almost-2-year-old baby girl.
2. I check out this blog a few times every day (and often keep hitting “refresh,” anxious to see your new posts)!
3. Hmm, favorite posts – obviously giveaways (although I have never had much luck winning ANYTHING in my life, I have renewed hope every Monday when I enter your giveaways!!) And Design Dilemmas, as they always give me thoughts about my own house. And I love the simple before-and-after type things your readers send in from time to time. It’s neat to see how simple little changes and projects can make such a difference!
4. In the future – I guess just more of the same – I would say there’s a reason you’ve got as many readers as you do!! :)

3. My favourites are house tour posts, before and afters and I love your organisation posts, especially the one where you described in detail where everything in your house lived! Your wedding was blissful.
4. Just keep doing more of what you are doing. I would love it if you could do more international stuff as I’m in the UK and we don’t have Target or Bed, Bath and Beyond :(
5. Nope, just more of the same, I love your stuff with Katie Bower too.
6. I’ve just started my own blog Feet in the River after being inspired by so many others and hope to one day get my house in as organised and finished state as yours – we are very good at starting projects but not so good at finishing them!

2. I check in at least once a day (sometimes more)!
3. I just found your blog recently and have enjoyed reading all your posts so far! I love the silly pics, your videos (loved the recent DIY in the store and the Q&A…what do you use to film with?), all the before and after shots!
I’m not so big on the giveaways — maybe because I’m in Canada or maybe because I just like reading your posts. I don’t need a giveaway to enjoy your blog. Your posts are enjoyment enough. Keep up the good work!
4.I think you’re doing a great job as is (how many times have I said that now…hmmm…hehe! But seriously, you are!). I’m frugal like you guys are so I’m just happy to get some inspiring ideas that will hopefully help me out with our house.

2. Check in twice a day (okay, more like 4-5 times)…it's therapeutic!!!
3. Love the simple diy, before & afters, and how you break everything down in "for dummies" language. Two of my all time favorites were Carrie’s apartments.
4&5. Like to see you help out some readers the way you worked Carrie's spaces. Keeping it under $200 + repurposing + one stop shopping = my kinda makeover. Organization & exterior fixes are also at the top of my YHL want list. Oh, & love when you guys include your stumbles too (some times us DIYers need a reality check).
6. May be just me, but so glad you guys aren't jumping on the baby bandwagon yet!! The kids rooms are inspiring ( two thumbs up for stripes), but as someone that doesn't want children (Never ever), I get bummed when my favorite house blogs go all "mom blog".

3. DIYs are my favorite, for sure. My fiance and I bought a foreclosure house over the summer and we love quick and easy things we can do to turn our house into a home.
4. More before and after photos, for sure.
5. Can’t really think of anything. I like the money saving/finance sections that you do every once in a while. Maybe talk about some more money saving things that you all do.
6. Nothing I can think of. Happy Blogiversary!!!

1. Who are you?
Melle (the last “e” is silent) Married to the man of my dreams for 16 yrs. Raised in Maryland, I now live in Utah but can’t wait to move somewhere new and exciting. Have one gorgeous daughter (Mary, 16)and two troublesome Golden Retrievers (Daxton, 4 and Roark, 2).
2. How often do you read Young House Love?
I check your blog 3-4 times per day. Don’t worry, I’m not a stalker, I just don’t want to miss out on new posts.
3. What are your favorite types of posts & why?
I love your before and afters. Can’t get enough!
4. What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
More design stuff. Less product plugging. Oh, and what about all of those posts that are “coming soon” like the nursery reveal?
5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
I really like that you stick to the design world. it is one of the things that sets your blog apart.
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
I am an interior designer who is extremely jealous of you and your success. I want so badly to do what you do!

Female, 30, married with two big dogs :) I read your blog daily and really enjoy the makeovers you do and the reader before/afters.
Megan S says
1. Megan- female, 30, Minneapolis, MN. Homeowner with longtime boyfriend (buying the house was a better investment than a wedding) No kids yet, but one very demanding cat. :-)
2. I read your blog daily- at work and again in the evening to see if there have been updates.
3. I like the Design Dilemmas and the DIY ideas best. Seeing a room come together on a mood board helps me to make choices that fit together as a bigger picture.
4. I’m sure you’re swamped with mood board requests so I don’t know how fair it is to request it, but I wish there could be more Design Dilemmas. It seems like when I started reading back in Feb. 2009 they were shared with greater frequency. Still, I’m happy to read about anything you want to share.
5. Again, I’ll read about anything! If you ever wanted to talk about how you save for projects or plan for major re-do’s you could do that (i.e., planning for a spring project that incorporates the money you get back in taxes for owning a home). Some of us are new to budgeting all together- I used to just save for a rainy day, but now I have to save for rain in my basement!
6. I just enjoy reading/looking at the blog and hope you have a successful year #3!

Forgot to mention that I turn 35 tomorrow! (In case you are doing a little market research!)

1. Female, 27 (but my 30 year old hubby reads it too), Newtown, CT, married (just hit the 5-month anniversary!), no kids yet but we count our 3-year old cocker spaniel Bailey as our first child :)
2. I check your blog daily! Although I only found it a few months back, eventually I will get caught up on all your previous posts.
3. I LOVE the easy DIY posts. We have a fairly big, really old house and there’s a lot of stuff we’d like to do to it but obviously we’re concerned about saving for the future (i.e. a family). Any money-saving, creative tips are welcome!!
4. I’d love to see something about refinishing wood furniture. My husband has had his dresser since he was a kid so I don’t want to paint it, but it definitely needs a makeover and I’m nervous about stripping and re-staining it.
The blog is truly great and you guys are super creative! Thanks so much!

How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
Since discovering it about 6 months ago, I have become a daily reader.
What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
I love when you guys break down the actual budgets of your projects and include everything (so many times others do this but leave out the cost of tools and tape). I also really like your Design Dilemmas and hope that you continue to share the links to the objects that you for those of us gagging for that pillow or that end table.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
Please move the comments to the bottom of each post. Seriously, I have a degree in web design and think that you have made amazing design and user-friendly website but find the locations of the comments button to be really annoying. I am super lazy and often will blow off commenting (or entering giveaways) because I am too butt ass lazy to scroll back up, leave a comment, and then revisit the homepage to read the other posts. Sad but true.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
Recently you showed your 72 hour emergancy stash and I noticed that you have mostly organic food products. I am slowly adding and altering our grocery list to include more organic products (on a super tight budget) and I’d love to see your shopping list/trip and a breakdown of your grocery budget.
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
I run a weddings on a budget blog (so to be fully functional website) and I think that your wedding was one of the smartest and most tasteful that I have seen on any budget…much less for what you actually spent!

4. You seem to have found a voice that resonates well with your audience. Continue to refine and distill what you’ve been doing for two years now.
5. I’d love to see more about how you use/integrate/hide technology throughout the house. For example: How do you listen to music from room-to-room? Where do you store your CD and DVD collections? Do you have a home media device (Apple TV, media PC, etc.)? What do you do to protect your computer data?

3. I love the before-and-afters and your mood boards. I absolutely LOVE decorating and your ideas are truly inspirational.
4. Maybe your advice on how to switch from one style to another. How to do it systematically and without your house looking like a total mismatched, Fred Sanford, in the process. As you can tell, I just got rid of all my old traditional decor, and am trying to go for something more fun and casual….and lets not forget dog friendly!
5. I especially like seeing and hearing stuff about the little man of the house….Burger. He seems like such a great little dog and such a part of your lives. Dogs and Decorating….life couldn’t get any better!

2. I try to get on here as often as possible, but probably on average 3-4 times a week. Definitely a free time at work thing!
3. I love the little DIY tidbits you guys do…especially if they involve your beloved furry friend! :) I also love before and after shots, those are always fun!
4. At this point, I can’t really think of anything. Maybe more contests that are open to us Canadians? LOL
5. I love how you did your wedding part and shared that with the readers..things like that are fun! Lets face it, the general public is pretty nosy!
6. Keep doin’ what you do, as you do it well and I’m jealous! I want to do it too!!!!! LOL I’d love to know the full story…of how you got away from your normal job, as I would love to do the same…..

2. I come on here daily, and sometimes a few times a day.
3.I LOVE design dilemmas, before and after, easy do-it-yourself, okay, pretty much everything you guys do. I’m not a huge fan of videos. I don’t usually feel like I have enough time to watch them (although I’m sure I spend just as much time scrolling through the posts).
4. More easy DIY, design dilemmas, less videos
5. I’d love more on what you do outdoors, choosing landscaping, etc. But I love all the great ideas you share and think you do a good balance!
6. I’m officially obsessed with your blog!
Margaret says
1. Female, 23, Maritally single but cohabitating:) in San Francisco, CA with our lovely adopted Chihuahua!
2. Daily if not more than daily.
3. Easy DIY ideas! I love being able to recognize a vision or find an alternative that is pleasing to the eye and my wallet. Before and afters are always great- y’all have a great eye and its so fun to see what a little paint and elbow grease can do!
4. Hmm..Advice.. Multiply yourselves so that I can commission you to come and decorate my house!
5. I think the biggest problem I have is motivating my man to help. Getting him to do something isn’t the issue, its more, getting him to see what I see. Don’t get me wrong, I love him to death and hes put up with more of my hairbrained schemes than you can shake a stick at… but it would be helpful to get some advice from a guys perspective. The step by step tutorials are AWESOME (like the how to upholster a headboard). I would even say, do some video tutorials of those kinds of things.
Also, I have a feeling there might be wedding bells sometime in the next year or two.. I would LOVE to have you guys recreate “inspiration” weddings from a DIY or semi-DIY perspective to save some dough. For example: the lemons and lime centerpeices were fabulous for your LOVELY backyard wedding, but what about some DIY elements in a more traditional setting (church, cocktail hour, reception).
Y’all are awesome! Best wishes!
Elizabeth says
1. Elizabeth, 23, tiny town in the desert, CA, married one year, no kids, no pets.
2. At least once daily. :) Found it a couple of months ago when we moved here and I didn’t have a job yet.
3. Do-it-yourself tutorials and ideas and before and afters (yours or anyone elses) are my favorite. The design delimmas are less interesting to me because I have a hard time visualizing things from the mood board. I wish the afters were posted at the same time, but I understand why they aren’t.
4. I do wonder what you will do when your house is ‘finished’! I really like seeing *your* house and how your design philosophy carries through to all rooms of the house, rather than magazine ‘inspiration’ rooms that aren’t realted or achievable.
5. I like that you don’t talk about your relationship with each other except in the most general and loving terms. I think that’s classy and something you won’t regret. I’ve read all of the archives, and I don’t think you’ve neglected anything home-related!
6. I love how relaxed yet professional (without being commercial) your site is. Nothing feels amateur.

4. Maybe when spring rolls back around you could do some in-depth DIY coverage of gardening/landscaping. I’m not very good at it, but would love some ideas to get better. I would also love to see “after” pictures on your design dilemma posts. Oh, and maybe updating the “We’re Digging” section more frequently!

You guys know you could use a free online survey tool like Survey Monkey to collect this information, right? I’m sure you know that, but if you don’t I’d suggest checking it out. But I’m sure you were thinking about that and decided you’d rather encouage people to leave comments.
Me – Female, 25, unmarried, no kids, no pets, live in rented apartment with roommate.
Reading habits – EVERY DAY! You’re in the “desert island” section of my Google Reader so you get read first!
Favourite post – easy or bite sized DIY. Seeing small posts like how you made over that thrift store piano bench into a beautiful piece make home improvements seem achievable to me and give me inspiration. These posts are also applicable to someone like me who rents – I can’t do any major renos at this point in time. I also like the organization stuff. Keeping your paperwork in a storage ottoman? I would NEVER have thought of that!
Advice for year #3 – I personally am really interested in the whole non-consumer movement and I love when you guys do things with thrift store finds. I’m far from a non-consumer myself, but I am learning to make an effort to re-use what I have or buy used before buying new. You guys have really demonstrated how you can do this and still have beautiful pieces (like your coffee table or the bench I mentioned earlier). If this isn’t a movement you’re familiar with go to http://www.thestoryofstuff.com. I think you’d find it moving since you’re very environmentally conscious.
Area of your lives – I actually really enjoy the relationship/romance type stuff that you sometimes share. You always have a creative and original take with a practical and thrifty spin – just like your design ideas. Love it!

3. I like the easy DIY’s, before and afters, and shopping for inspiration videos(I do that all the time)
4. I think your blog is wonderful but I would like to see a trash to treasure type area…devoted 100% to thrifty shopping and re-vamping (inspiration, places, etc.)
5. My husband hates when I bring things home and tell him all the wonderful things that I would like to do…does this ever happen? For either one of you…if it does I would like to hear a little blurb about it. Other than that I LOVE the blog…I am a bit addicted!
6. Keep up the great work and love on that burger…we just lost our little daisy and I love seeing pics of burger he brightens my day :)
Thanks again for all your hard work to make all of our free time so enjoyable.

5. Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? your inspirations – like why you picked this color or where you got this cool idea from, how you put things together for your boards and stuff
6. Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? i have gotten a lot of inspiration from you and i’m working to redo my house, a little at a time to bring more life into it. its been so stale for years and your site actually got me started on looking more into design and so i’ve been combing the web for ideas and even looking into taking some design classes!!

LA female in mid twenties, read your blog daily (okay, not on the weekend). My favorite posts are the DIYs and Before and Afters. I like the Design Dilemmas but wish we could see the outcome more (I know this depends on the customer sending the pic in). Without seeing the result, the significance of the home makeover is largely reduced.
I don’t know the waiting period on that, but if you could post the finished product closer to the original, it would be even more amazing =)
Sadly, I can’t watch videos at work, and since I spend 50 hours a week in front of a computer, I try to stay away on the weekends. So I end up never watching…..although I wouldn’t discourage you from making them (I’m sure you have tons of watchers).
I have a group of probably around 30 blogs that I read or at least peruse daily, all of them either fashion, design or cooking/baking based, and I must admit, yours is always the first blog I click on each and every morning!
Congrats on year three!!

Who are you? Male/Female? – female
Age? – 29
Location? – near London, England
Marital status? – I live with my boyfriend
Any kids? – nope
Pets? – 2 cats, 1 currently AWOL
How often do you read Young House Love? – I read it most days – it is on my RSS feed
What are your favorite types of posts & why? – My faves are the makeovers – the ones where people have asked for you to do a mood board & then taken your advice & we get to see the finished result. I like the projects you do in your own home too & also the house crashing.
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? – I would like to see more makeovers of real houses & less giveaways. I suppose the bulk of your readership is from the US & the giveaways reflect that, but honestly, your blog is excellent & the giveaways could disappear tomorrow & i’d like it even more. When I see a giveaway post, I skip it now as I know it will ‘probably’ not be relevant to me, whereas I feel all of your other posts are excellent & very inclusive.
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? – I am really ‘into’ what to do with wood flooring right now. I have the wood flooring from HELL – some flooring DIY tips would be great! Also I am DESPERATE for a post ASAP (before Oct 2nd) on staging a house for a realtors valuation!!!
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? – my neighbours (from hell) came back from their summer away last night (buried my head in the sand & though that they would be gone for good) so i’m having our house valued so we can move away from them. I’m so mad/sad about it.

1. Female, 27. Married, a dog and a cat. Three miscarriages and currently pregnant with our miracle daughter. Bought a house 2 years ago, built in 1914, used as a rental before we bought it as a foreclosure. It was cheap and needs a ton of work. We want to do SO much but have very little money. Our upstairs bathroom needs a complete rehaul, our roof has a hole and needs replacement…oh the list goes on!
2. I only recently found your site (and honestly, not even sure how) but I do love reading it, about once a week. Makes me want to do more to our house but again, money is tight.
3. I enjoy the before & after pictures the best – I’m a visual learner/hands-on by nature, so to SEE how something is done is much better for me than to read it on paper. Ask my husband – drives him nuts, I”m sure.
4. I really enjoy your site and honestly, not sure I could give you a suggestion to change. Maybe I should look over your site again and ignore the laundry?… :)
5. Do you do reviews on products? Like, “green” cleaning products or super cool ways to take paint off of window sills, baseboards or how to fix cracks in plaster & lathe walls (something else to be fixed) and ways to keep the dog out of the cat food…
6. From what I’ve seen, I really really love your blog. I was I was more ambitious (something about growing a baby wears me out) and we had more flexible funds. But, we do what we can when we can. Like filling in holes so the yellowjackets can stop creating nests in my foundation and replacing cracked windows in our sunroom and garage…the latter still needs to be done…

1. Female, 30, married with one furry dog-child in Knoxville, TN.
2. Daily
3. I love your cheap room makeover posts (like the one’s with John’s sister), and how-to posts (not sure what you label them) such as, how to arrange pictures, how to set a table, how to dress a mantle, how to arrange shelves, etc and posts how how to save and budget money. Oh, and I love your oraganizing posts.
4. The only way you can make it better is by even more posts! On the hour, every hour. ;) Actually, what I would love to see is more posts of you all designing rooms (such as the nursery) or possibly if you house crash and help someone with a mini make over or help them organize something like a drawer or closet.
5. I’d love to see more money saving/budget friendly ideas. Especially with the holidays coming up–how to entertain for less, gift giving or holiday decorating on a budget.
6. Keep up the great work! Can’t wait to see what you all do in year 3! Here’s my blog–thebrickcottage.blogspot.com

1. Female, 25, married, live in Cincinnati currently but I think we have a move on the horizon! No kids or pets currently, but a dog once we have a yard and more time, and kids are wayyyy down the road
2. I read YHL daily
3. We live in a great condo now, so I’m really just reading because you amuse me, and I’m getting great ideas and inspiration when we move and decorate our next place. I like the before/after, house crashing, and easy DIY posts.
4. Offer personal shopping consultations! I’d LOVE to go spend an afternoon at IKEA with you. I think it would be great to see you interact with a client and come up with some ideas on the fly as you merge both ideas (hello, video potential!)
5. I think a city by city (or even region) quick guide would be great. You could ask readers where they are from, and everyone in a particular city could list some of their favorite places to shop for decor in their area. I think I’m going to be moving from Ohio to North Carolina (Winston-Salem in particular), so I’d love to know about all of the great places to shop! Who better to tell me than other fans of YHL?
