…let’s talk about you. During last year’s blogiversary extravaganza we polled our lovely readers to learn more about who they really are, and we thought that the beginning of year three marked the perfect time to do that again. So who the heck are you? And how you think we can amp up Young House Love in the coming year?
If ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Oh and real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required (feel free to make up something entertaining) so the pressure is off.
In a few days we’ll be back with a little summary of your comments (you know we like to read each and every one) so we can begin to formulate a bona fide plan to pimp Young House Love even more in year three. So without further ado, here’s what we’re dying to know:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids? Pets?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings? Videos? Something else?)
- What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? (More of something in particular? Less of something else?)
- Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? (If you have a blog of your own, feel free to plug it here!)
Thanks in advance for your input! We really value your thoughts, comments and suggestions. After all, if it hadn’t been for last year’s poll we wouldn’t have known you guys wanted giveaways… which means no one would be winning $500 from Lowe’s this Friday!

2.Everyday since I found you!
3.I love it all. But I guess I like when you guys do personal makeovers and the videos the best.
4.Humm if I had to think of something to add…more Burger! I think there needs to be a dog house makeover in your future. haha can you tell I’m an animal lover?
5. I like when you sometimes have posts about everyday life stuff.
6.Well since you ask. If you are looking for any new giveaways for the future…my painting horses would love to help out, :) http://www.ponypaintings.com

1. Female, 28, Middle of nowhere (Likely, CA, ha!), married, 1 adorable little girl, 2 dogs.
2. On my Google homepage, so I click on interesting blog titles to read.
3. I like the posts about how you style things (bookshelves, tablescapes, etc.). I’m trying to work on that myself, so I pull “rules” from those.
4. I’d like to know how you run things, business-wise. Maybe put on a blogging class, like Holly @decor8 did?? Why you like Twitter, why you have an Amazon shop, etc. How did you get so popular?? :) Maybe include some guest bloggers so we know where you might get inspiration??
5. Hmm…I think you guys are pretty open so I can’t think of anything.
6. Thanks for doing what you do and making it fun. It’s all inspirational. :) Not sure how to plug my blog besides – Come on over to Likely!! (Click my name to come over. :)

1. Female, almost 31, no kids yet, 1 fat cat, in Massachusetts
2. Every day, twice a day. Great medicine. :)
3. DIY tutorials, before & after, and design dilemmas. I can’t watch the videos at work (well, I could but don’t want to get caught!).
4. More inspiration pics – taking expensive ideas and making them “real world”
5. No, I like that it’s kept to mostly house stuff.
6. JourneyChic (http://journeychic.com) loves YHL and proudly displays your badge!!
cjm says
1. Female, 31, Brooklyn, NY, engaged, no kids yet, no pets yet (though we long for a dog)
2. I discovered you guys when I was searching for a classy, inexpensive, DIY wedding. Yours was so inspiring! And hearing that you are former NY’ers who moved back to Richmond (my hometown) made me feel like I discovered my Kindred Spirits (though my fiance thinks it’s more than a little weird that I have such high regard for a couple I’ve never met). Reading YHL is my “treat” to myself for when I’ve done a good job studying for my Nursing Licensure Exam. I only get a treat about 3 times a week! I take the big test in 2 weeks and maybe then I’ll read you guys all day long. ha ha.
3. My favorite types of posts are both the DIY and the before and afters. I have been very frustrated by home design magazines only touting very expensive designs (my heart nearly broke when I got the sad news about Domino). I love that you guys aim to save money and DIY, not necessarily because you have to, but because you choose to and because you know it will save you money and still look great! And I have a very hard time visualizing an end result–your before and after columns really help me realize what is possible! Oh and your videos are just charming.
4. Your recent cleaning post was great. Honestly, I was getting a little intimidated by how pristine your home always looks–it’s good to hear that you do a little bit of pick-up before you take your photos. I’m embarrassed to admit that I learned alot by hearing your cleaning routine. Would love hearing more about your recipes too! Seemed like your culinary style is characteristically simple, but easy, and delicious.
5. I would love to hear about how you two deal with conflict…not that you have alot of it, but there must be design ideas you disagree upon, or just the challenge of working together…would love to hear how you compromise.
6. I just think you guys are great and can’t wait till I have my own home someday so that I can paint my own brick!! Keep up the good work and don’t lose your smiles! Your optimism is catching.

2. Haha.. I love that one of the choices is free time at work. Because… I would never do that…
3. I love the before and after pictures! We have a fixer-upper and I love to see how others transform their spaces. I also love the house crashing!
4. To go off of #3, I would love to see more “FREE-designs” (get it, free redesigns?) because I’m always struggling with layouts in our house. It would be fun to see how you can move around what you have or use pieces from other rooms to redesign without spending a buck. (I’d love to get a custom mood board, but don’t have the extra cash for it and then be able to still buy all the great stuff you guys would suggest!)
5. I like the way you allow us to feel like we know you with tidbits of personal info here and there, but also focus most on design. You guys are great! Keep on, keepin’ on!
6. We are in the slow process of re-doing our fixer-upper, and sometimes I post about it on my personal blog (htt://sarahg816.blogspot.com)

YHL is in my google reader. I read everyday!
I enjoy the mood boards most. They’re an inspiration. You find great items, and we get the info! Its awesome.
I would love for you to keep posting the design dilemas/mood boards. Its also fun when you randomly post about some cool deal that you have recently found. Love the trips to Target too. I’m not as into the videos…afterall I’m at work when I’m checking my blogs. :)
Trying to work on my blog. Its one of those things that doesn’t always make it to the top of the list. I’m not so techy, so I haven’t a very creative layout at this point. My sense of humor exists, just not in the blog. So its a work in progress to say the least…http://roomtoromp.blogspot.com/

5. sure! bring it all!
6. um, I’m not really a stalker… but if I see you guys around town, just realize you might have a 5′ 10″ mom with 2 boys attached to her tackling you in the street. Just saying. 4. My main inspiration for my own home decor and improvement is this blog. Why? Well, for one, it’s attainable. You guys get what it’s like to be ‘ballin on a budget’ and the end result is resourceful, frugal, and stunning! YHL and others like it are a great inspiration because frankly, the magazines are fairy tales. So that means next year please keep the projects coming-yours and everyone else’s.

1. I’m a 32-year-old girl living with her boyfriend in a rental suite near Vancouver, Canada. No kids yet, and no pets either at this time.
2. I subscribe to YHL on Google Reader, and since I’m online almost all the time, I read your posts very frequently.
3. I love DIY ideas, anything about storage/organization, photos of your home, projects you’re about to tackle, whatever. I don’t watch the videos because I’m usually at work when I read your posts, and because I just don’t have the patience to wait for video to load, and then sit there for 10 minutes. And, this is probably just me, but I tend to skip through your Design Dilemmas because I find the rationale too long. I’ll also read anything about decorating on a dime because I’m without funds most of the time.
4. You don’t need my advice because you two are doing a great job.
5. I enjoyed your posts about your engagement and wedding, although I tend to zone out a bit on posts about your road trips / visiting friends. I really love the posts about decorating Sherry’s sister’s bedroom in her shared apartment because I live in a rental too. I also love the posts about decorating for your soon-to-be-born nephew. Plus, Burger is adorable!
6. I’m going to tell you a little more about me, just so you know the sort of stuff I’m into, in case you want more insight into your loyal readers. I love anything crafty and DIY. I’m currently refinishing and renovating used furniture, as well as doing various knitting / sewing projects. I’m a graphic designer by day, so I love anything design-y, whether it’s interior design, paper, clothes, books, etc. I don’t have a blog, although I’ve been toying with the idea (I want to design one, pick out topics to write about, but I loathe writing).

What are your favorite types of posts & why? I love all the detailed DIY blogs. We have a 50 year old house in the downtown district that we are slowly but surely making our own. We would love to be more ambitious with our renovations, but put those plans on hold to get married first. PS- Love, love, love the wedding stuff on your site. We are holding a DIY Backyard reception at the end of October and hope it turns out half as beautiful as yours!
What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3? I think you guys are great the way you are!
Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently? Probably Burger!

I read your blog every day. Well, I check it every day and I read it whenever you post something! Admittedly I play catch-up on Monday for any posts that might come out on Saturday and Sunday; we have a lake house we go to on the weekends that has no computer.
LOVE before and after posts! Easy DIY ideas get passed along to hubby, who’s the real DIY-er in the family! I like design dilemnas but I have to admit, I wish you could post a picture of the room itself with all your suggestions implemented! Sometimes I have a hard time picturing it! And there can never be enough videos! You two are great together and so much fun to watch!
Not much to contribute that might be of interest to you or your readers… OH! WAIT! We added a second level on our ranch-with-a-basement style lakehouse two summers ago. It’s going to be our retirement home (and home of our future dog!). We learned a a lot and here’s a HUGE hint for your readers: don’t rely on the architect drawing your plans to know what he/she is doing just because you hear a lot of people recommend him/her locally. We got a great plan with one tiny (!) flaw: no coat closet on the first floor and no linen closet on the new second floor. I have nowhere to store sheets and towels near our main bathroom. The only place I have is on the first floor, near our powder room. This really isn’t very convenient.
And one of the awesome ideas my husband had? A murphy bed in the spare room that doubles as my craft room! So the bed doesn’t have to be taking up all that floor space all the time.
Sorry for this LOOOONG post!

5. I’d like to know a little more about you guys. We know what you’re capable of tackling on the house front, but who are you? What do you enjoy? Do you have cereal for dinner (like me!) or do you cook awesome meals together every night? I think sometimes you can better understand people’s design decisions when you know their habits. I like to know the “why” of things.

3. I like the DIY projects and before and after pictures. I think it would be nice to see more of the finished projects after you give someone their mood board.
4. More creative and inexpensive ideas for making the house look good. Maybe some ideas for throwing a party…I thought your wedding ideas are great and used a few of them for my own wedding.
5. Maybe some more outside projects…or more about your favorite places to shop for the house (besides Ikea, because we all know that Ikea is awesome).
6. Here’s my blog: travelin-tracy.blogspot.com (my husband and recently were in Kosovo and have now moved back)which was a lot about my travels and now that we have just bought a great 1896 house I will be spending the time writing about my new projects there.

4.Just keep up what you’re doing. You guys are obviously doing something right! I’m not a huge fan of the videos, but that’s just because I tend to miss out on posts because I’m usually reading at work!
5. Anything DIY/innovative is always interesting. And I like how you sometimes share happenings in the design/homeowner world that I may not have read elsewhere!

1.Who are you?
Male, 33, Married with a 2.5 year old beautiful daughter and another little one on the way! I’m an urban planner and love using my creativity to craft all sorts of different things.
2.How often do you read Young House Love?
At least twice a day – once in the AM and once in the PM!
3.What are your favorite types of posts & why?
Definately DIY ideas and before and afters. I get the most inspiration from those. I also love your reader redesigns that show what others out there are doing. I think that reflects your humility, which is so very refreshing!
4.What advice do you have for us to make YHL even better in year #3?
I think that as you guys get more famous you could do YHL tour posts! For example, you catch wind that so and so is doing a particularly tricky remodel of a space so you go over and do your own editorial take on their project. Of course you do some of this through your reader redesigns, but a play by play as the project unfolds might be kinda cool. Sometimes people are good at the remodel but bad at the explanation! You guys do such an amazing job at both. If you’re interested I would invite you over in a heart beat to take before and afters of my projects! We’ll feed you a great dinner!
5.Is there a topic or other area of our lives you’d like us to talk about more frequently?
I think you guys do a great job of keeping a balance between sharing too much and providing a great service. The less we know about you, the more intrigued we are!
6.Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
My wife and I just bought a home in the Northside neighborhood of Pittsburgh that dates from the early 1920’s. The previous owners did a wonderful job in not ruining the original architectural details of this beautiful brick home and we have had the pleasure in bringing the beauty back out of the original stained glass windows, wood trim and doors, wood floors and wood stairwell. We are now in the middle of slowly finding the design elements that we want to bring into this house and found your blog back in March of this year. We consult with each other every night about your blog and find inspiration in almost every single one of your posts.
Keep up the good work!

2. Oh, you know… like a hundred times a day! ;) Usually check at least 2 – 3 times.
3. Love anything before and after, also love seeing your home and your own personal projects.
4. I’d say keep doing what you’re doing! Stay true to your roots, and keep on with the amazing content and upbeat attitudes!
5. I like hearing more of the personal bits that you share occasionally… the “river rats” you are, the dates you go on, trips you take. It just makes it that much more fun to follow along on your journey.
6. I have to just say another huge thanks for providing me with honest, candid and valuable advice when I started up my blog (http://www.emmylu.com/blog) about a year ago. It’s grown by leaps and bounds, and I have to say… having a “real blogger” provide such great feedback when I was an absolute “nobody” was a huge motivator to succeed!

2. Whenever your page shows an update star on my Top Sites page on Safari.
3. I love the easy DIY ideas AND the before & after pictures. It’s always neat to get great, inexpensive ideas of things I can do in our home, and I also love to see how others have redone their rooms.
4. You guys do a fantastic job already. Just to give a suggestion, something I’d really like to know more about: gardening. I just finished weeding our flowerbeds, and I honestly have no clue if some of the junk I pulled out would’ve blossomed into some gorgeous plant in four weeks. Gah! Also, if you have any tips for masking/hiding pet items, that would be great! Our 35-pound dog’s crate could use a little camouflage action!
5. Sherri says her wardrobe is primarily black. Why is that? (OK, you don’t have to talk about it frequently. I just wondered that when she mentioned in the Katie Bower post that her wardrobe is all black.)
6. I stumbled upon your blog about three weeks ago, and I am totally addicted. You guys have some brilliant ideas. I’ve already “borrowed” your wedding shadowbox idea (but I’ll totally give you all the credit for it)! I plan on borrowing quite a few more!

2. I read my Google Reader almost daily. If it’s a post I’m really “caught” by, I try to actually click over to the blog, ’cause I’m guessing you get more $ from the ads if I do :)
3. The DIY tutorial posts, and before and afters. The design dilemas aren’t so helpful to me, because I have a really hard time visualizing how the room will look when it’s finished. And I never have money to actually browse for new decor items.
4. I love the step-by-step tutorials! It was great to have the nursery ones–even though they weren’t in YOUR house, they were totally helpful! More tutorials, please! I also love when you shout out other blogs with great decor ideas and/or share your own resources (books, TV shows you watch, and such). Again, for me, the design dilemas aren’t quite so helpful without seeing the final product…but I know a lot of people really love them!
5. I like hearing about the non-house stuff occasionally too–budgeting, marriage, funny stories, etc.
6. I can’t wait to show you guys my completed nursery–it’s totally outside my normal decor style (TURQUOISE AND PINK!), but I’m really excited about it!

hi! i’m female, 27, married with a baby, and have lived in our first home for three years in nj– a fix-er-up-er. i peek at the bog daily and LOVE it! my favorites are before and afters, house crashings, and all things renovations and organization. i love the inspiration from your home and others and would love for y’all to add floorplans to the mood boards (i have a hard time figuring out furniture placement), take on more home projects (you could always adopt others homes as i love yours!) and add a round-about cost for the diy projects. thanks!
