Blerg. I either have food poisoning or a stomach bug today. But thanks for all the stool love this morning, guys (wait, that sounds kinda gross). And as for this afternoon, while I attempt to avoid breathing on anyone else in this house (who are all thankfully unscathed so far), I thought it might be fun to create a little “timeline” of how each room in our house has evolved, since it’s definitely never an overnight transformation around here. And given our copious bedroom updates, we thought it was a fine place to start. So without further ado, here’s how the room has evolved over the last twenty months since we moved in. It’s still not done, but it has definitely come a long way – and it’s really fun to look back on some of those “middle” stages and wonder what the heck we were thinking. Haha. Thank goodness for trial and error!
This rundown is a pretty great reminder that small changes (along with a few big ones) can really breathe new life into a room as you learn what you love and how you’d like to live. We’ve actually come to a place where we wholeheartedly believe that over-time tweaks are half the fun (I’d probably want to move every year if I could only do a room once and then had to live in that frozen-in-time-result without changing a thing). So here’s the very first shot of our bedroom that we shared the day we moved in. Pretty much a blank canvas.
First we just plopped our furniture down on the floor and didn’t even have a bed for the first three weeks or so. Getting up every morning from a ground-height mattress = not our fondest memory.
Then we got Ed the Bed since we were overwhelmingly excited to have such a giant room to work with (our old bedroom was around 10 x 11′ and this room is 16 x 16′ – so we thought something big and frame-y would look awesome in our cavernous room).
Then we got this duvet on clearance from West Elm, but John only let me get it under the stipulation that we would ebay it if we found something we liked more down the line. Hindsight = 20/20. We never should have settled and definitely should have held out for something we both loved. Oh well, live and learn. Right now it’s neatly folded in our playroom just in case we decide to use it/the fabric for some other space (curtains for Clara’s big girl room, etc). Otherwise it’ll definitely hit ebay someday.
Next came our big ol’ snowball of a chandelier, which is still one of our favorite things to stare up at before bed or squint up at in the early morning. Here it is hanging oddly low thanks to that top bar of Ed the Bed (it looks crazier in this pic than it did in person, but it still wasn’t quite right).
We struggled with Ed for a while, tweaking him to remove those top posts since they were just too encroach-y with the chandelier. Oh and we got a nice big jute rug to cozy up the splintery old wood floor. Here’s that phase.
Then we found two Alaskan botanical prints at a yard sale (we honeymooned in Alaska, so we thought they were sweet for our bedroom) and hung them on either side of the bed with Ramsey in the middle.
Things pretty much stagnated there for a while until Ramsey was broken during a book shoot (he jumped off the wall in the kitchen when no one was even in there) and we decided to hang the botanicals inside the bed posts instead. And then we found our new rug at a local outlet, so we pulled the old rug out (with plans to use it under our dining table or in our sunroom eventually – or craigslist it if we don’t like it in either space down the line). Our new super-discounted outlet rug definitely breathed life back into this stuck/stagnating room. So grateful. Sometimes it takes changes like this to jump-start things again once you’ve hit a wall.
Then in a flurry of trying new things, we gave three different prints (picked up for $2.99 from Ikea a while back) above the bed along with different pillows from around the house…
… only to decide we preferred the botanicals and another pillow combination (along with some lamps that we actually bought for the bedroom instead of just using leftovers from our first house’s living room).
Then we finally put on our big kid pants and decided to just give the bed a try on a wall that we previously thought would be way too challenging (thanks to an off-centered window on one side and a nook on the other side). At first it looked crazytown…
But after we re-hung some art/rearranged some furniture that we already had, we ended up here.
And then we gave Ed a little haircut.
And then we made an upholstered headboard to cozy things up a little more.
Next we finally painted the walls a darker color (Rockport Gray by Ben Moore) which definitely helped the headboard and all the thick white trim pop (John wanted to do it for months and he finally wore me down). Boy was right. We love it so much more in this moodier sleepier color.
It’s especially noticeable how much the new color accents the chunky white trim around the sink nook. Such a difference!
Of course we still have plans to:
- refinish the floors
- possibly paint the ceiling a light light blue color
- furnish the entire bare wall across from the bed
- eventually turn a window into a door that leads out onto the deck
- someday vault the ceiling so it’s sweetly peaked (how cozy would that be?)
… so we’ll have to keep you posted. But it’s pretty interesting to look back at all of these phases of evolution, sort of like a time capsule of where we were, where we were trying to go, and where we are now.
Actually when we look back in our archives, every single room in our first house evolved the same way – moving things around, using what we had, altering things to work, getting new things along the way, and hitting up lots of outlets and thrift stores along with affordable retailers like Ikea and Target to keep things wallet friendly. Did we make mistakes? Sure! Did we learn as we went. Absolutely! If we could rewind would we skip all of those wrong moves? Who wouldn’t! But it’s pretty cool that even with those mistakes, you can come pretty far (and learn a ton about yourself and what ya love) by just giving things a shot and letting a room evolve over time. Sometimes over a long a$$ time. Haha. But the journey is part of the fun, right? Our first house took us 4.5 years to figure out, so maybe we’re getting a tiny bit faster in this one?
Although some other rooms are completely untouched, so maybe not. Haha.
It’s funny how some things stayed, like:
- Ed the bed (although he did get that trim)
- our free hand-me-down dresser from John’s parents
- our leaning mirror (which John got me as a wedding present back in 2007)
- our $50 Ikea chandelier
Meanwhile, other stuff came in from other rooms, like:
- the Hobby Lobby mirror that used to hang in the living room
- that small white cabinet from the dining room
And other items went out, like:
- the old rug
- the old side tables (both of which we’ll reuse or craigslist for loot to put back into other tweaks)
Thankfully even things like those old too-small yard sale side tables were just $11, and we’ll probably get to use those in Clara’s big girl room (and can always resell them for at least that much) so it’s a good lesson that just because you buy things, you don’t have to be married to them. Undoing something like a paint color or an upholstery fabric can take a day of work, but it’s hardly irreversible. And it just might be the key to making it through a not-sure-where-we’re-going phase and onto another love-it-so-much-more phase. Heck, even if over time you realize that a furnishing or accessory isn’t the best choice for a room, there are definitely other rooms where they can go to live (like our blue stool story from this morning). We love keeping things flexible and taking a completely reversible approach to making our house a home. It’s just so much less intimidating and final than having some unspoken can’t-make-mistakes rule (even if you wait for years between decisions, there’s no guarantee that you’ll love each choice- sometimes you just have to live and learn).
It’s fun to see all of these bedroom evolution pics on one page, right? So stay tuned as we slowly work our way through all of our other rooms (probably on and off over the next few months – or years if we fall off) just to see where they’ve been and where they’re going. The goal would be to keep these posts updated as we go, and to link to them from our House Tour page – or another page called Room Evolutions – so anyone who wants to see details on a specific room could click on that room and see these rundowns with a bunch of links to all the projects during those different phases (a number of readers have actually requested that we group room updates that way).
Have you ever snapped photos of a room over time as it evolved? Did it take more than one paint color to get it right? Were you surprised to see what stayed and what went? Were you shocked at how much of a difference some free changes like rearranging the floor plan or tweaking furniture (like cutting Ed’s posts) can make? Did little homemade touches (like an upholstered headboard) end up making all the difference? I think our DIY headboard along with our giant pineapple-based lamps are our favorite things in the room these days.
What’s your favorite thing in your bedroom?
Psst- This month we’re making a trip out to visit John’s grandma in Huntington, WV, so if anyone has an awesome house that they’d like us to crash (a la these) in either Huntington or Charleston WV, we’d love to check out your digs and hopefully stop by (just send your submission pics to [email protected]). Woot!

I really appreciate this post, Sherry. I’m feeling so down lately that my house isn’t beautiful. Right now, with a hurricane toddler and new baby, I’m surprised it’s clean! Thank you so much for this post. I’m sure my house will evolve, too. It’s just a matter of time (in my case finding the time) until we get out of crazytown. I hope you feel better soon!
Carrie says
Its such a small world! My grandmother lives in Huntington WV also. Who knows, maybe she and John’s grandmother are friends! Haha Wouldn’t that be a hoot? I live in Charleston WV and if I wasn’t so embarassed by my house’s renovation-in-progress status I’d love for you to crash it. We recently remodeled the entire second floor of the house and vaulted the ceilings. I spent all day today painting and let me tell ya, painting 14 foot vaulted ceilings–definately more challenging! Your room evolution gives me hope that even if I don’t get our master bedroom perfect right away, it’s ok to let it change over time, and have fun with it.
Ps. We are planning on building a deck next spring and my husband absolutely loved John’s zippered seam on your deck. We may just have to incorporate it into our design as well!

Some transformations, now let’s see Clara sing about it lol.

I think I am more amazed by the evolution of your photography. You can tell that you guys have had to go professional in that department for the book. The newer pictures have this ethereal glow…it shows how much more you love the space now. My husband and I finally got a bed from West Elm after sleeping on a mattress on the floor since we married. Makes me present my bedroom in a different way too; it seems more worthy of lovely pictures. :)

Hey guys!! My husband and I are from Parkersburg, WV and went to PSHS ( I was in John’s cousin Travis’ graduating class and played b-ball with Meghan..small world!!). I hope ya’ll have a great time in Huntington. We have been there so many times over the years as my brothers and sister attended Marshall University. There are so many beautiful older homes in that area and I can’t wait to see what homes you get to crash!! Feel better S!!!

Our living room is in a constant state of flux! In fact, one wall of the room is currently painted a different color than the other three–not because it’s an accent wall or something like that, but because I wanted to live with the new color for a couple months to make sure I REALLY liked it before I moved the heavy furniture, ha!
But yes…our living room is always evolving and probably always will be. I do love that you guys aren’t afraid to say, ‘hey, this isn’t working like we thought it would’ and then do what you need to do to change/repurpose it. I totally admire that–sometimes I fall into this trap of going, ‘crap, I already spent $xxx on this, I’ll just have to live with it’.
Ashley says
Love seeing the evolution! This room is gorgeous! We have just moved into a new home, so I’m starting over from scratch. I’m totally the same way when it comes to changing things up. I must’ve changed our living room around about 3 times now and finally settled on navy blue, cream and crisp white.I totally need to start keeping track of the evolution of the rooms like this! We are actually going to be laying flooring similar to the cork floors you’ve done in your kitchen, any tips?
YoungHouseLove says
If possible, start in a corner where you can lay mostly full pieces. I had the circumstance where I had to start right by the fireplace, which meant some of my first pieces were cut short by the hearth… which made keeping things in place initially kind of difficult because there wasn’t enough weight to hold them in their spot. But once I got a few row done it was actually pretty quick!

Ashley says
Thanks for the tip John! Thankfully our room is basically a big rectangle with nothing tricky to get around. Hopefully everything will go pretty smoothly :)

What color did you paint the walls in your bedroom? They look so beautiful and calming. I think the chandelier looks beautiful, too! Thanks for sharing!! I hope you can get some rest and feel better soon!

The original blue color was called Carolina Inn Club Aqua by Valspar, but our new gray is Rockport Gray by Benjamin Moore.

First, I hope you feel better Sherry!
Second, this is totally OT, but I wanted to say thanks for the inspiration you guys provide as I really needed it this weekend. We live in a rental, and because of that I’ve lived with the bathroom of doom for a year (our apartment is in an old house with a lot of vintage charm…and ruin!) Recently our landlord bought us some new fixtures, which was awesome, but that only went so far as the walls, ceiling, trim, door, and very old window were in rough shape. I finally had enough and spent two days repairing holes and cracks, and rehabbing the window frame. Then I primed the heck out of everything with Kilz, and finally it was onto painting. I bought the cheapest low VOC Ben Moore paint I could find (we’re on a tight budget), and was shocked by how poorly it covered. This is a tiny bathroom, but I was having to paint around all the fixtures, and do the ceiling (not even enough room in there to work with an extender for the roller), so it was really time consuming. I did a second coat, and it still looked horrible. At that point we were on day 4 of not being able to use our shower, and I wanted to cry. Then I remembered your epic 4 coat living room trim painting episode. That became my mantra (“Sherry and John had to do 4 coats, sometimes these things happen.”) I did a third coat, which helped a lot. I probably should have done a 4th, but threw in the towel since it is just a rental (my husband assures me I’m the only one who sees the flaws). Oh, and I got your recommended short handled brush, which made the trim, door frame, and window a breeze to paint by comparison (I used an off the shelf white I already had from Home Depot). So, this is my very long winded way of saying thanks for keeping it real – it really helps!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, that’s so sweet Jen! I can totally relate to those lots-of-coats jobs (they’re always the worst!) but I bet it looks so much better now! Your landlord is insanely lucky to have such an awesome tenant like you :)

I have also scoured the internet looking for it. Is there anything you can tell me about it that may help me on my quest? Anything marked on the back, a tag or something. Anything? It would be perfect in my living room.

I feel so lazy when I see how much you’ve done to this room! :) We’ve been in our house for just over a year now and I don’t think a single room is “done”. I try to remind myself that working on your house is part of your JOB so it might take us a little longer to get around to things.

Aww! Charleston, WVa is my childhood hometown! Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone that has a home that’s crash-worthy down there. :(
Favorite thing in our bedroom? Probably the bed that we bought on Overstock.com for $600 (it was $1,300 at the mattress store in town). It is super comfy and after a very long day it’s the best. thing. ever.
Our bedroom needs serious help, but unfortunately we have larger tasks to complete before we really tackle it (like drywall, new windows and flooring in the attic to make it a functional guest room).

We have the same mirror from hobby lobby and was wondering about the little piece that is attached to hang it. On ours, it’s in plain sight and kind of takes away from the pretty circle pattern. I don’t see it on yours. How did you hide it? Hope you feel better soon!
YoungHouseLove says
I just ran and looked at ours and it actually has that hanging thing there but since it’s all the same color metal I guess we just don’t notice is much? Is yours the same orb color? If it isn’t maybe painting it to blend would help?

My bedroom hasn’t changed half that much in the 13 years I’ve owned my home! Lol! My mom’s passion is decorating. She’s a lot like you guys, always doing and redoing….it’s rare to go to her house that something hasn’t been moved, recovered, brought in, taken out, etc. I swear as a result I’m the opposite. I do love a nicely decorated and furnished home but I only redo as my tastes change. Mom’s famous for coming to my house and saying, “You know, you could move this over here.” and I usually reply, “Yeah. Or I could leave it right there.”
Anyway, my favorite thing in my bedroom? A nativity scene my dad carved out of balsa (balsam…the thin wood, whatever it’s called) when I was a kid. It’s in an antique oval frame and it is gorgeous and I love knowing that there’s not another one like it anywhere. He died five years ago which makes it even more special.
Feel better soon.

Poor Sherry with the stomach pyrotechnics! Hope you feel much better very soon! I thought I had food poisoning or something last week, but it turned out be appendicitis instead! :O WHUPS. NOT THE SAME AT ALL.
I love the Room Evolution series idea, and would find it very inspirational. I can’t wait to continue more on my house/bedroom specifically. Moving with a twisted foot (injured 5 days before Moving Day), then twisting the OTHER foot a month after finishing PT on the first one, quitting a job in the spring and then not having a job for months (and by necessity bringing in a roommate), finally temp-working, all lead up to an emergency appendectomy on the one-year anniversary of Moving Day. All of ^ that has set me WAY back on where I want to be in the house a year into it! SO many obstacles, and all I’ve really changed is getting a bigger kitchen table/chair set (hand-me-down, which I love), and doing a minor furniture switcheroo in the living room. I have plans/to-do lists, but I don’t think I should be trying them whilst on Vicodin :P
A question on your bedroom – I know your pix over the dresser at at the same height at the top, but the left on is always half-covered by the lamp. Do you ever think of off-setting it and adding different height dimensions that way? With the mirror higher up than before, it could be interesting! (This question totally makes me feel like someone’s great-aunt giving utterly unsolicited advice/unnecessary questions :P)
/long comment.

I can’t even tell you how excited reading and looking at this post made me! I was thinking to myself about the ever changing design/decor in a home and how I’m always moving or tweaking things to get it right and then moving, adding, and subtracting again. Right now I’m in the midst of making changes to our master bedroom and it feels great but it doesn’t feel like it’s done. Every post you’ve done about your bedroom changes has been totally exciting because I loved it from the start and then you made changes, and more changes and I loved them more and more but seeing the evolution is like ‘WHOA!’ I forgot that your room started from point A and now it’s at point Z (or maybe T lol). I think my favorite thing about your room is the way you’ve mixed these different patterns together but they flow so nicely – that and the paint change….and the bed….oh geez I love it all! You guys rock! :-)

Love the post! but I have a question :)
We just purchased our very first house and im struggling to a) not become overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done! and b) let myself let the room evolve over time.
Even thought you guys have mentioned a million times that it doesn’t happen all at once ;) I still feel that it should be happening faster – but the main part is that I feel I can’t let the room evolve. I feel if I put the picture there it should be in the right spot and not move and not change. I know it sounds crazzzy…haha..but I guess Im just worried on making mistakes and having the house look insane – which is why i over analyze everything :) and then don’t get much done..lol…Any tips on how to set free and run like the wind?? not to be over worried ???
Also….a perfect example would be you guys moving your pictures around a few times in the room – currently that would give me a hard attack because I wouldn’t want to wreck the walls or anything. Can you explain if you just spackle over the hole and repaint that one spot? or how do you go about something like this without leaving damage and not having to repaint the whole wall or anything.
Thanks for your help and I hope I don’t sound too crazy :)
YoungHouseLove says
I would just say to follow your instincts. If you’re happy with the painting there, don’t move it. But if you get new art and keep wondering what it’ll look like in that spot and have an urge to just give things a try, definitely go for it! It makes for some of the best “jumps” from raw to more finished. It’s really all about giving things a shot and just keeping an open mind as you go that allows rooms to grow. Hope it helps :)

OMG. I know I’m super late in the game on this post and those prints in your bedroom, but my mom, who is from Alaska, has those same ones! They’re in her dining room, and I’ve always loved them. So strange that they showed up in you all’s house, too!!

I love looking at photos of your current bedroom. It really is so appealing to the eye; the eye can flow to each piece, in peace. The colors relate to each other but still have contrast.
We just finished knocking out our old miniature closet and adding a big wall length closet, painting (trim, ceiling, and walls), and doing a big sort of our clothes so that everything would fit neatly in the new closet space. This project took TEN months! I’m so glad you posted about how some rooms (and projects) can take years to finish, and are constantly going to be changing. (I’m already trying to get my husband to agree to put the bed on a different wall, but he thinks I’m nuts!)

All this moving around makes me wonder about patching holes in the wall. When we move something and patch the hole and repaint it, you can always tell the paint is a little bit different from the rest of the wall. (We are using satin paint, so that doesn’t help). Do y’all have a secret to avoiding noticeable touch up spots???
Thanks!

The key for me is really sanding the spackle well – sometimes twice (spackle, sand, spackle sand) so nothing is raised or lumpy. Then I feather the paint way out (not just on the hole, feather it like a foot around – very thinly and evenly). Hope it helps!

Love this post! Your bedroom is gorgeous!
Is the white duvet cover still the one you bought awhile back from Ikea (Ofelia Vass)? I noticed it looks longer in some pics and wasn’t sure if there was a switch. How do you like it? We are contemplating buying it (like the idea of white with our walls, which are also Rockport gray–love it!!!). A bit worried about keeping white spotless though. Does it wash well? Also, we currently have a coverlet which we tuck into our platform bed. Are the Ikea comforters that go with this duvet cover too bulky to be “tuckable?” Perhaps this trend (tucking in a comforter on 3 sides) has passed anyway? :) What do you think? Finally, for a duvet/comforter for a queen bed, do you recommend sizing up (king) or down (full/queen)?
Thanks so much!!! My husband and I are YHL super fans and we think you guys are fantastic!!!!

Yup, it’s still Ofelia Vass and we still like it very much! Not sure if it’s tuckable (probably depends on the thickness of the insert). I still think tucking is pretty if you have the atience for it (we’re lazy – haha). We like getting a king duvet and duvet filler for a queen bed so there’s more room to share. Hope it helps!
