And our lucky-slash-friendly winner this week is… Jennifer M (whose best friend is her husband. They met in college studying architecture together and now work together). Congrats!
If you saw that title above and thought “oh, like the Bestå media storage system from Ikea” instead of “typo alert!” then you may be just as into the fine purveyor of flat-packaged Swedish furniture as we are. And if you’re not the only Ikea lover in your circle of friends, then you’ll be happy to learn that this Saturday on March 9th Ikea is celebrating BYOF (Bring Your Own Friend) day as part of their ongoing Life Improvement Project. The day will feature freebies, special discounts, seminars, activities, and even gift card giveaways. Speaking of which… they’re giving one lucky reader three $100 gift cards right here this week (one for the winner and two for his or her friends) – which I’m pretty sure would solidify your status as BFFs for life.
- PRIZE: Three $100 gift cards to Ikea
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “BYOF ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … about your BFF. How did you meet? How long have you been besties. What’s the weirdest thing you love doing together? Do you have funny nicknames for each other – or a secret handshake that involves winking and doing the Macarena?
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: We always beg every vendor to ship internationally but some companies are not legally able to vend things beyond specific areas (more on that here). This giveaway is open to the United States.
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, March 6th at 8pm or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winners. Good luck…

BYOF ME! We met in elementary school and have had many funny nicknames for each other over the years… as well as a bunch of nicknames for our other friends and classmates. We also used to ride bikes to school with our bikes locked together with one of those short chains… which resulted in a few crashes but many laughs (by us as well as amused passers by). Aww, bffs….

My best friend and I like to joke that we’ve known each other since before we were born. Our parents were in Lamaze class together, and we’ve been friends ever since (we were born two weeks apart).

My BFF is my husband… so cliche! We met 8 years ago working overseas at a U.S. Embassy. We love spending the whole weekend holed up watching the extended editions (and special features, of course!) of the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. But now that we have a toddler, those weekends are but a happy memory!

BYOF me!!!
Me and my BFF met in college when we ended up living together when a mutual friend told us that we were (we didn’t have a decision in the matter is basically what the third party told us). But it ended up being the best thing ever! The two of us are closer than ever and laugh at the circumstances that we met. Our favorite thing to do it lay around drinking soda and eating candy while watching bravo. Something we started in college when we were under 21 and something we still love to this day!

BYOF me! My absolute best friend ever is my sister :) We met when she was born, we have been best friends HER ENTIRE LIFE (and most of mine), and the weirdest thing we do together is probably plan to be next-door neighbors when we’re old (and after our husbands have croaked), so that we can build an underground tunnel connecting our houses so that we can still visit each other in the rain. Haha.

We met in middle school, about 16 years ago. Once we came up with a synchronized swimming routine in our little above ground backyard pool. Another time we built a crazy apartment complex out of jenga blocks. Having fun, being silly, spending time together, I guess! :-)

BYOF me!!! I met my BFF my first year at UVA because she was my roommate! We had never met but were set up by a mutual friend and we instantly clicked! Before we knew it we were kicking our parents out the door on move-in day and gearing up to go tubing in the river. Nowadays she is my Maid of Honor and is currently planning a kick booty trip to NOLA for my bachelorette weekend – I’m one lucky gal :)

BYOF ME! …about your BFF. We met because she worked with my husband and he knew we’d be great friends so he set up a date!!! We have been best friends ever since probably about 7 years now! The weirdest thing we love to do together is probably reno projects?? She makes tearing linoleum off a floor fun! We don’t have funny knicknames for each other but I love that my 2 year old daughter calles her “auntie beth” because they are so close!!!

BYOF me! I met my best friend at school. I didn’t really know her but a group of us went to get coffee together. While we were waiting for the elevator in the basement she grabbed my rear end and said, “kinda romantic don’t you think?” I knew someone so innapropriate would be an awesome friend, and so she is.

I met my best friend while studying abroad. We’ve been inseperable since. We once lived in a tiny one room/one bed apartment in Korea, I can’t imagine doing that with anyone else.
Nicole says
BYOF ME! My bestie and I met in 6th grade and I didn’t like her because she was too quiet and she didn’t like me because I was obnoxious and loud. Fast forward a year and I moved schools and she was on my bus! I basically forced her to be my best friend but she’s stuck around for almost 20 years so I think she’s ok with that.

My best friend Jane and I met at our church when we were in college. Besides sharing the same faith, we are both artistic; I’m a singer, she is a ballerina. We even look like we could be related; so many people ask if we are sisters!

My best friend and I met the first day of college – we were suitemates. She retold the story of how we met, which is pretty hysterical (it involves me saying “Hi – I’m stephanie, my parents just dropped me off to go to a NASCAR race), during her toast at my wedding. Classy. :)

“BYOF ME!” We met when his brother came to meet my parents, because he was going to marry my sister. We actually hated each other when we first met.

BYOF ME! I met my BFF at work 13 years ago. We have so much fun together and I look up to her. Unfortunately, I moved across the country and only see her once or twice a year.

BYOF me, please!
Hmmmm . . . I’m not one of those lucky ones who has had a constant best friend, besides my DH. Our story is fun . . . including things like me swearing to all my friends I would never date a boy from the college town where I went to school . . . and then I married one. We’ve been best friends for just over 15 years, and married nearly that long. We love hashing out all kinds of brainy stuff–from business principles to economics to politics to diet & alternative health. And as for secret signs of friendship–it’s all in the eyes. :o)

My best friend is Jooyoung. We met when we were assigned to work together (the only thing our boss ever did right was introduce us!) We were completely uncertain of each other at first, but quickly we discovered that even though she is Korean and I’m American, we were like long-lost twins who love fashion history, tea, good books… I was so sad when she moved back to Korea. The most unusual thing we did together was eat live sea urchin when I visited her in Seoul. We exchange emails EVERY DAY and I keep the US Mail in business sending cards and letters. Right now she lives in Hong Kong, but she’s hoping to move to Providence soon, so an Ikea house-warming gift card would be PERFECT.

My BFF is my identical twin sister. We met when we split from one fertilized egg into two embryos, a little over 35 years ago. We like to get fro-yo, go for bike rides, play Mario Kart, work on crafts, rock-climb, ski, and do just about everything else fun together. That’s what twin sisters are for!

BYOF Me! My husband is my best friend and we met almost 17 years ago. We will be married 16 years on April 12th. We married a year and a day after we met. We love IKEA!

My friend is a relatively new bestie/mentor. I started a moms prayer group in my previous town. “S” and I quickly clicked as we both had a heart for prayer for our kids and their schools. Often it was just the two of us praying for all of the kids in the school district as well as our own.
“S” is my mentor and role model as a mother. Her kids are grown and she now is a grandma. Her example and her commitment to pray and fast for her kids and grandkids is inspiring! Her kids are phenomenally successful and wonderful people serving their country and the Lord in some very dangerous careers and locations (some even top secret).
We’ve since moved from that community and I miss “S” greatly, but I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and learn from her!

BYOF ME! Pretty please with sugar on top ;)
My bff is my husband John. We were lab partners in a class called “Thermal Measurements” – we like to say that things were “heating up” then. The weirdest thing we love doing together is photoshopping our faces onto unusual people in unusual places. We laugh for hours!

My BFF, Frances, and I met about 18 years ago. We love to shop and watch movies together and we bonded in drama class. She also used to draw me comics during Spanish class in high school and we would laugh until we cried. Her nickname is Franchesca and mine is Urine (classy, I know).

BYOF ME!… My BFF is Amy. We met in high school and have been friends for about 24 years. We started out not liking one another all that much (we were in a dreaded girl triad situation–blech) but grew to love one another dearly. She is the sister I never had, and I am the sister she wished she’d had (hers can be difficult, to say the least). I can’t say we like doing anything weird together, but we did go through a period of head-banging to Metallica in the 90’s (just imagine super long hair, bangs, the front seat of her car parked on a side-street) YIKES! By the way- she is the only person I will go to IKEA with! It is NOT the same with my husband (sorry honey).
