And our lucky-slash-friendly winner this week is… Jennifer M (whose best friend is her husband. They met in college studying architecture together and now work together). Congrats!
If you saw that title above and thought “oh, like the Bestå media storage system from Ikea” instead of “typo alert!” then you may be just as into the fine purveyor of flat-packaged Swedish furniture as we are. And if you’re not the only Ikea lover in your circle of friends, then you’ll be happy to learn that this Saturday on March 9th Ikea is celebrating BYOF (Bring Your Own Friend) day as part of their ongoing Life Improvement Project. The day will feature freebies, special discounts, seminars, activities, and even gift card giveaways. Speaking of which… they’re giving one lucky reader three $100 gift cards right here this week (one for the winner and two for his or her friends) – which I’m pretty sure would solidify your status as BFFs for life.
- PRIZE: Three $100 gift cards to Ikea
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “BYOF ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … about your BFF. How did you meet? How long have you been besties. What’s the weirdest thing you love doing together? Do you have funny nicknames for each other – or a secret handshake that involves winking and doing the Macarena?
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: We always beg every vendor to ship internationally but some companies are not legally able to vend things beyond specific areas (more on that here). This giveaway is open to the United States.
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, March 6th at 8pm or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winners. Good luck…

My best friend and I met in 2nd grade. We were both named Laura, to make things less confusing, our teacher started to call her “Laura Heart” since she would always put a heart next to her name. I got jealous and had my teacher call me Laura Balloon so I could also have something fun with my name. It stuck all these years and everyone still calls us by those names. So fun!

I met my best friend in Jr. High and we have been best friends for about 10 years now. The weirdest thing we love to do together would be going on long drives in the country, preferably on Sundays! My nickname for her is Han and hers for me is Ju! We definitely did have a secret handshake in High School.

Wow, how I would love to win this one. I need to gut and rebuild my craft room, and this would really help. My BFF will come help me, but it’s all a bit overwhelming at the moment, so I’m not getting anything done.
My favorite thing with her was our road trip from Oregon to Maryland, complete with 26 sheep in a 10 x 6 trailer. We shared the driving and slept in the car, stopping to feed and water the sheep while we had lunch and about 3 hours a night when I couldn’t drive anymore (night owl) but she wasn’t ready to wake up yet (lark). One night we spent at a friend’s in Ohio. He had opened up space in his barn for the sheep, and the next morning took his dog in to help us drive the sheep back down to the trailer. I stopped him, opened the gate and told the sheep “load up”. He just stood back with his mouth open, watching the sheep run down to the trailer and start jumping in. Great trip, lots of fun memories!

One of my BFF’s – we met in the first week of college in the University Women’s Ensemble 20 years ago. Her nickname is ‘Baptist Barbie’ which has a funny story behind it. We would love to be in business together today but living states apart prohibits it!

My best friend is about 10 years older than me and we met in college while working for the same student ministry. We had nothing in common when we first started talking and now she’s grown to one of the most dear people to me in my life. We (including her husband) constantly talk about Battlestar Galactic, we all discuss Next Generation and can generally be nerds together. We all, including her girls who are 10 and 6, love Avatar: the Last Airbender too. I’m thankful for her every day and am so glad she’s a part of my life! She’s my best friend and role model!

BYOF ME! My little sister is my best friend. My first memory is of going to the hospital to see her when I was three. They wouldn’t let me in, so I had to look at her being held up by a scary looking nurse through a second floor window. Our favorite thing to do is quiz each other to see if we’re still on the same page. As in, which of these shirts [placemats, boys, animal drawings] is the best? Love her!

I’d have to say my besties are my sisters. We fought like cats and dogs when we were little, but now we get along so well and talk almost everyday even though we all live in different states!

I met my best friend in college, where we lived next to each other. We ended up living together for many years. I taught her how to use a sewing machine so she could make curtains. We replaced window glass, painted rooms, changed light fixtures, and built a raised garden together.

I met my BFF “officially” when we enrolled our kiddos in the same mommy-and-me gymnastics class when they were 18 months old (7 years ago!), but I’d know her hubby when we swam together as high schoolers, and he and my hubby were good friends in jr. high…the beauty of living in a “small” town ;) Even though they live 8 hours away now, we still get together several times a year, and text each other goofy stuff that our kids do throughout the week, and plan crazy cooking and/or canning extravaganzas when we’re together.

BYOF ME!!! My best friend is Nicole, we met in 5th grade when she asked me if I was going to a skating party and we have been best friends ever since. We have matching tattoos, a symbol of friendship, mine is on my side, hers is on the back of her neck. We love doing everything together, but it has been hard since she is away at school while I chose to stay in the city we grew up in for school.

I met my two best friends 22 years ago, on the hottest summer day ever! I was 5 years old and was enjoying playing in our pool with my sister and cousins, when my mother called us up to the house. Our neighbor had seen a family moving in down the street, upon further investigation she found out they had two girls. She informed these people that she knew another family (ours) that had two girls as well, and she’d introduce them. She dragged them down to our house, and my mother introduced us. They didn’t say a word to us. My mother informed us that we were not allowed to get back in the pool, because their swimsuits hadn’t been unpacked yet, and it wouldn’t be fair to swim if they couldn’t. So we just had a stare down for about an hour or so and then walked them home. The day after all was forgotten, and the rest is history.
We don’t have a secret handshake, but we do like to reminisce about our first meeting. They joke about how much I hated them at first, and I remind them of the fact that they refused to talk to me. I love my best friends!
