This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We’re a one car household and lately have taken to walking to the grocery store instead of driving. And of course, once we’re at the grocery store, we use reusable shopping bags!
Katie Metzker says

We have a HUGE gargage can outside our garage door and near the kitchen and we have started recycling so much more because of it.
Anna says

Even though we don’t save any money by generating less trash (we use an apartment complex dumpster) I’m always amazed at how little trash we have because we compost and recycle.
Kristen says

I use vinegar, baking soda, and borax to clean just about everything in our house. It’s environmentally-friendly, cheap, and works better than any prepared cleaners I’ve tried!

We attend our local Farmer’s Market each week so that we can get fresh local veggies, fruit and meat that have not traveled thousands of miles to get to us. Most are organically or naturally grown too, with no pesticides or hormones used. A little “green” and supporting our local farmers!

We put a large bowl underneath our faucet, so when we wash veggies, or our hands, we’re able to use the water to water plants/herbs outside!

I’ve made many changes over the past few months to become enviromentaly friendly…I make my own multipurpose solution, glass cleaner, fabric refresher, mouthwash and toothpaste. I stopped using paper towls (cloth towels/rags only), have an airtight container for fruit/veggie scraps so I don’t have to take the garbage out so often and even am working on being able to get rid of my car!
We’ll see how the last one goes…

This year I’ve been looking for Christmas presents at used book shops. :)

GREEN ME PLEASE!
At home, I turn off the lights when leaving a room and I take an extra few seconds to shut down my computer and printer instead of letting them idle.

just a few small steps: I use filtered tap water instead of bottled, and I recently “converted” to vegetarianism which is pretty green in itself. I would love to start composting once I get a little green space!

We recycle, use reusable grocery bags for shopping, and use reusable water bottles – as well as keeping energy use (and thus cost!) down in our home :)

we have gotten so good about recycling, i love sorting my trash these days and of course, we donate all things we can’t use or store

We bring our re-useable bags to the grocery store, drink from stainless steel water bottles to avoid the plastic version and buy a lot of household and clothing items second hand =) And, we do a little gardening so we have fresh veggies/fruit and make our own yogurt to save money.

I have recently switched to all natural cleaning products and I LOVE them!

“GREEN ME”
I live in Portland, Oregon, so green is the word on the street! Probably the biggest change I have been making in the past 6 months is greening my cleaning products (recyling and composting are a part of our daily lives for a long time now). And I gotta say – it’s a LOT cheaper than I thought it would be! It’s amazing how much $$ you can save when you’re using vinegar, baking soda, castille soap, and water! Uh-MA-zing!
betsy says
there is a new fancy eco-friendly pizza place in our town, their website even describes how they implement their earth-friendliness in their cleaning procedure and “to go” supplies, which is nice.

This weekend I swept up all of the pine needles that had fallen onto our driveway. I put them in a big pile and will spread them in our garden bed for instant, free mulch. This will be green and frugal — great combination!
Celestia says
GREEN ME!
I use reusable grocery bags, refill water bottles, and use reusable lunch containers to avoid plastic bags as much as possible.
lisa says
GREEN ME! I also make my own cleaning spray like another reader–out of vinegar, water, a little rubbing alcohol and a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid. cleans just as well, or better.

Eliminating all cleaning products with harmful chemicals, recycling everything (my husband and I have a recycling date every Saturday morning!), and attempting to grow a garden – hopefully next year will be more successful!

I recycle like crazy, use reusable shopping bags and try to walk as many places as possible!
hollie says
GREEN ME!
I always try to buy something that can be loved into greatness from a secondhand shop or sometimes even trash piles before buying something brand new.
Not only is this way easier on my bank account, I find a lot of older furniture items wear longer and better than new items- boo to planned obsolescence!
Kate says
GREEN ME! (please!)
REUSE containers! We use all our empty jars (sauce, jam, etc) instead of buying tupperware containers, use bread bags for bulk food, anything we can re-purpose we do!

I have been trying my darndest to save water however possible to water our yard and plants with. Unfortunately, with the lack of rain and extent of heat, it’s been a relatively dry year here.

I’ve been switching over our household cleaners to Mrs. Meyers and 7th Generation. Both smell so good too, the house smells like a garden! Much better than the weird clean smell we all grew up with! I’m still doing trial and error with a few other brands, but the two I mentioned always shine through.

In addition to recycling, driving as little as possible (easy in DC!), and using green cleaning products, I’ve been shopping at thrift stores and flea markets as much as possible. I just had a great experience at the DC Flea this past weekend!

We are teaching our 2-year-old to recycle!! So much fun :)
Ana says

I don’t know if it counts as a tip, but I went green by letting my yard go brown. I don’t water the grass in the summer since we’re in a drought — why waste it for something that will spring back (no pun intended) with rain and cooler temperatures?
Ann Marie says

We use natural cleaning products, shop local produce (as much as we can), and drink out of stainless steel water bottles when we are on the go.

GREEN ME! I do the stuff most do: reusable grocery bags, homemade cleaners, organic produce/meat, buy used….so I’m anxious to read any new ideas!
Brooke says
GREEN ME!!
I make a concerted effort to bring my reusable bags w/ me almost everywhere for shopping trips & bagging groceries. Always keep light-usage & water usage at a minimum and am trying to repurpose more things rather then buying new. It’s def a work-in-progress…my next goal is to start making my own cleaners.

We have been slowly phasing out paper towels, and we us a green cleaner (Mrs. Meyers) instead of chemical-laden products.

I am a big recycler and I pack my lunch everyday so that means lots of baggies – BUT I started to use the Glad containers for as much as I can and that has really cut down on the amount of baggies I use!
Laura (Blogging Over Thyme) says
GREEN ME!
Over the past couple years, I’ve made sure that I always have re-usable bags for the grocery store and if I happen to not have them on hand, I always make sure the bagger uses as little plastic ones as necessary to get the job done.
I also unplug all appliances or anything else in the house I don’t use throughout the day! This can save a ton of electricity.

What a cool prize! I’m really a novice on the green front but did start an organic garden this year and have been trying to use homemade and non-toxic cleaners throughout the house. Every little bit helps, I think!

Just moved to Denver and it’s a lot greener than my old home of Phx!! And it’s contagious because the hubby and I are making some changes! First, we got cruisers, so now we bike more than be drive our cars. Recycling adds up more than our trash. Switch from using those awful plastic water bottles, gasp!, to now having a water filter pitcher in our frig. Also, I have started researching compost and gardening. Hoping to get that started!

I have been trying to end my bleach addiction – I have moved on to cleaning with vinegar and trying to attack the mildewed grout (we recently moved to a condo with 2 bathrooms that haven’t been grouted since the 70s, literally)with hydrogen peroxide and borax.

My husband & I have recycled for the past 3 years. We recently made our own compost bin & have plans to make a rain barrel in the near future. We also plant our own veggies (tomatoes, squash, cucumber, zuchinni, spinach, banana & bell peppers) as well as blueberries, cantalopue & watermelon.
