This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Green me! A few years ago I taught my mom how to make bulk laundry soap on the cheap, saving on packaging and using less-harmful products (for the environment AND the skin). She’s totally obsessed now! Hooray to my mom for being green!

Green Me! I should probably be more green in my daily life, and this prize would be a great way to start!

We do whatever we can – composting, recycling, using non-toxic cleaners around the house, no phosphate in our dish detergents, non-clorine diapers, etc.

My husband and I don’t do anything exotic to try to be green in our everyday lives, we just try to minimize our purchases, reusing what we can, and when we do buy new stuff, we always try to buy products that come in recyclable containers. We’ve learned that our mil containers are recyclable where my hubby’s sis lives, so we hoard ’em and leave them with her whenever possible. I guess every little bit helps.
Mike @HA says
GREEN ME! We could so use a rug! We’ve been green in all our cleaning supplies and we enjoy feeding my sister-in-law’s compost worms with our extra biodegradables.

Some of our toiletries/beauty products don’t have recycle symbols, so (in addition to now only buying eco-friendly products, both packaging and contents) we drop the empty non-recyclable containers at our local Origins store — they accept (and recycle) any bottles.
Michelle says
Green Me: What a wonderful idea. We have decided to grow herbs and vegetables on our patio using recycled containers.

I love local farmers markets for groceries and I use a tip I actually think I picked up on this site of mixing a cup of water and some vanilla extract and lemon.. put them in the microwave for a minute and then wipe down the inside- easy! Love it!

Have switched out all our cleaning products to eco-friendly versions–also use washable/reusable cotton dishcloths (hand-knit by my Mom!) for all our kitchen and kids “after-meal” cleanup instead of paper towels. Additionally, I’ve switched to organic personal care products.

GREEN ME! We recycle and use very little plastic if possible. Recently we have begun trying to pay more attention to where our food is grown/produced. It is a difficult adjustment to go local, but we are starting with small steps.

GREEN ME!! I try to make all of my own cleaning products. It saves me money and makes me feel better about not having all of those harsh chemicals around the house!

I was just recently in Atlanta, GA and visited the botanical gardens. I was happy to see that one of the main buildings was LEED certified, a concept I have just recently learned more about. LEED certified buildings need to meet a certain criterea of ‘environmental consciousness’ in order to snag their plaque.

We try to stay green by re-purposing old things that were left around our home when we moved in. For example, we didn’t like the rock border color for our rock garden, so we spray painted those and some stepping stones instead of buying new ones.

I’m proud that I finally got my parents to turn one of our trash cans into a recycling bin! We recycle SO much more now. Next step composting…

GREEN ME! and we use a bucket in the shower when the water is heating up so we can water our plants or fill up the washing machine. It’s little, but it makes that time seem like less of a waste.

I’m always trying to find ways (green and other ways too) to be a better person. I recently discovered a blog with some good ideas and challenging posts to reflect on: http://dosmallthings.com/ It sort of falls into the category of “green locations” I’ve been lately… (And no, I’m not affiliated with the blog, just a fan.)
Awesome giveaway, by the way!

I’ve taken to “family cloth” lately. And yes, it scared/squicked the heck out of me when I first read about it but here I am. But the more I read about it, the more it made sense. I bought several packs of baby washcloths at Target and I keep a pot for the dirties next to the toilet. And only for #1, so it’s only me using them, not my boyfriend. I wash them with the towels, cold wash then hot!

I’ve started moving towards more eco-friendly cleaners for the home. My hubby still prefers to use Method’s Le Scrub for our bathroom, but I quickly moved to just baking soda and vinegar for most of our home-cleaning needs. Not only is it cheap, but it’s super easy, too!

We started recycling about 6 months ago! I know, I know, but we finally got one of those bins and we have a weekly pickup! It’s incredible how much less garbage you have because so many things can be recycled!
We also have a compost pile next to our garden and I use reusable grocery bags. We’ve changed all our light bulbs in the house to energy efficient ones.
Hey, gotta start somewhere huh?

Green me! Love this giveaway! So fun.
I try to be green by recycling paper, turning lights off when not in use and by buying low VOC paint for our perpetual remodel.

We have started making our own laundry detergent and cleaning products. We are also saving up for a rain barrel! Slowly but surely we are changing all appliances to high efficiency also. I love being green!

We raise our own food! Everything from potatoes to pork! If I can’t grow in MY garden, we trade our eggs and meat for it with other family/friends! This (even just a small bit) reduces the demand at grocery stores and factory farms which saves amazing amounts of fuel/energy!
Sarah Gilbert says
Green ME!!! We’ve had a compost going for about 6months…we get a weekly supply of food from a CSA (community supported agriculture), so we are not only eating locally grown food, but its also sustainably or organically grown….we have just switched to a new trash service so that we could start recycling pretty much every piece of waste we make….we try to be as green as possible…we only use cloth napkins and limit paper towel usage. It’s something that I strive for! Winning this prize would make me so excited and help me achieve my goal even more, especially that rug….its amazing!
Jen says
GREEN ME! I grew a garden this year. No vegetables were edible, but I have high hopes for all I learned. And we are in the middle of building a green house!
