This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

All my green tips come from you–thanks!! And thanks to you I’ve started recycling and switched to Seventh Generation products. Also–I recently abandoned my nonstick cookware due to concerns about the safety of teflon.

GREEN ME! Our city (Spokane) has recently made a giant increase in what we can recycle and in what sorts of waste can go in the yard waste bin. Yay!
Theresa says
GREEN ME! We have been trying to buy less and use what we already have more…and we planted a garden for the first time this year and now have plans for a bigger and better next year.
Jen says
Green Me! We do a lot of the usual stuff but recently started home-making 2 new natural products: mold/mildew cleaner (tea tree oil, borax & vinegar) and a mosquito repellant that works without all the chemicals.

We switched from Rubbermaid to Pyrex.

I recently set up a compost bin in my backyard. I am amazed at how much less trash we put out each week now that we can throw our food scraps and yard waste in the compost bin.

Like you guys, we make all our own cleaning products. Saves money and saves us from the harsh chemicals!

I use Seventh Generation cleaning products and love them. We also compost and recycle so we have very little trash that goes to the landfill.

We’ve been using cloth napkins and dish clothes for several years now and do not buy paper towels. Not only is it eco friendly but I think it makes dinner time more special. We have the cloth grocery bags and I also use them for shopping at stores too. A lot of the stores are OK with letting me use those instead of giving me a bag that I have to throw out. I also take my lunch when I work in the office and use glass containers for it instead of plastic sandwich bags. And this year our office started letting us work from home at least 1 day a week so that saves me in gas (and travel time). Every little bit helps!

I have started baking my own bread, growing my own veggies and herbs. Not only does it taste good but it’s helping the earth be a little bit greener.

We’ve been composting, recycling, using natural cleaning products and reusable shopping bags, etc.

We recycle at my house, and also at my job: the library. We recycle all paper materials, bottles, and cardboard.
Sarah K says
GREEN ME! In our effort to reduce non-recyclable waste we’ve been using only cloth napkins for over a year, and use repurposed dish towels or microfiber cloths for mopping and dusting. Our favorite is using a dishcloth on a swiffer, then spray a 50/50 white vinegar/water mix and mop away on hard floors. It disinfects, doesn’t streak and uses way less water than a bucket!

I love growing my own fresh herbs!

We recycle everything we can…we save old juice bottles and use them to collect old engine oil while we change the oil in our car…then we recycle the oil. :)

We recycle and are teaching our one-year-old how to throw things in the “paper garbage”. It’s small, but I feel like if we start her off now with a base like this, she’ll be helping me compost in no time! :)

It’s not necessarily an easy tip for everyone to implement, but my hubby and I use cloth diapers for our DD, and we’re expecting #2 in a few months, and will be re-using them for our second baby, too!
Michelle says
GREEN ME- There is a new Green Line bike path in our city.
Sarah W. says
GREEN ME! Besides recycling almost all of our trash, I do odd little things like using empty toilet paper rolls as “cord keepers” for my hand mixer, extension cords, and other electronics.
Katie says
GREEN ME! Haha I love it.
Shea Looloian says
GREEN ME! I save my wine bottles and use them as watering cans for my plants outside!
Heather D says
GREEN MEI use baby food jars (think twins :) for party favors, sewing notions, and tea light holders
Lindsay Atkinson says
GREEN ME! I’ve switched to all natural cleaning products.

Green Me! I just tried this project from Martha Stewart http://www.marthastewart.com/article/cereal-box-organizer where she repurposes old cereal boxes as file organizers for an office. My husband goes through at least 2 boxes of Frosted Mini-Wheats a week, so I’m looking forward to getting organized ASAP :)
Sydney says
Green me! I’m into reusable sandwhich and Snack bags because plastic ones would get used so fast in my house!
Emily says

I recyle all of our bottles and containers that I can and my husband and I are going to try to make our own container to hold the rainwater for our watering needs like y’all did!

I save plastic and glass containers to reuse for whatever needs containing around the house. (Attach peanut butter jar lids to the undersides of shelves in a workshop to have removable screw/nail holders)

Recycling pick-up is pretty expensive where I live, so I do my best to collect paper and plastic (no glass recycling around here) and bring it to the local university recycling center near my office every week.

Much to our chagrin, the plastic containers that are used for take-out by our beloved local Chinese restaurant are not recyclable (We can only recycle 1&2 here, and they’re 5), so we just collect them and re-use them as cheap Tupperware! They’re the perfect size for leftovers, and they’re dishwasher safe.
Elizabeth says
GREEN ME!
We have a long way to go in being green, but we do try to recycle as much as possible (the neighborhood makes it easy by providing bins and free pickup once a week) and using cloth grocery totes.

I’m a huge fan of apple cider vinegar… I recommend it to everyone from anything to clearing up warts (instead of burning your skin with acid!) to getting rid of dandruff; I’ve used it to help clear some acne, too!

We try to be green in our daily lives. Take public transit, walk, or bike. Participate in a CSA. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Compost. And much more. I’m getting some good ideas of additional things we can try from these comments! :-)

GREEN ME! I’ve finally started recycling paper after realizing just how many print-outs, sketches, etc. I’d been throwing away.

I’m a college English teacher, and we are notorious for going through lots of paper. My goal this year is to rework my classes so that students turn in all of their assignments online, rather than printing them out, and I am going to grade and respond to them online too, rather than on paper. It’s a tough transition to make, but one that I think in the long run will make a BIG difference in the number of trees I’m taking down for the sake of writing!
Emily B. says
Green Me! We have started using green cleaning products and reuse our spray bottles for windex, etc.
