This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We try to pack no-waste lunches and fill our own water bottles. We used cloth diapers on our kids most of the time, and we try to use rags, dish towels and cloth napkins instead of paper.

GREEN ME!! We’re doing a few things to be more green around our house: using non-chemical, natural remedies for insect control in the flowerbeds, reducing paper towel usage by using inexpensive dish towels for kitchen cleanup, and we’ve converted almost entirely to Seventh Generation cleaning supplies (not only are they more eco-friendly, but they’re made fairly close to where we live…bonus!)

I use cloth bags and make my own cleaner: just vinegar, water and a few essential oils. Works better than anything on the mass market!

We are pretty frugal these days with me back in school, so we tried to save money and be green at the same time. We time our shower usage, definitely don’t use plastic bags, etc.

I have a young son, and I’ve found that informing him about the importance of reusing, reducing, recycling has helped tremendously. He helps with the sorting, and if he catches me throwing something away, he is VERY careful to make sure it isn’t something we could reuse or recycle. He inspires me to keep at it!

Everybody made fun of me for spending $20 on a water bottle but I put ice in this thing at 5pm and in the 100 degree heat, there’s still ice in it the next morning. It doesn’t sweat and of course, no more plastic bottles!

I use less detergent than calls for in my laundry because I read that it’s really the friction that cleans it and we now use vinegar as our staple cleaning product!

GREEN ME!!! I recently went to a hotdog place with a friend where everything was compostable, recyclable, reusable and the food was all organic, grass fed, etc. Pretty impressive for a hot dog shop! (Drew’s Eatery in Chicago, in case anyone is interested)

We have recycled consistently for the last year. We did it off and on, and then got serious. And I am constantly amazed at how much recycling there is every week. Maybe more of it than actual trash!

I have stopped using paper towels and I bring a re-usable bag to every store I go to. Some other cities I have found to be green are San Francisco and Toronto.

My favorite green tip is to wash my kitchen and bathroom files with hot water, with a few drops of tea tree oil and biodegradable dish soap added. It smells fantastic and doesn’t need rinsing! Also, I’ve got a carpool going with three other families for our kids’ school.

I walk or bike everywhere possible from early spring to late fall, shop the farmers market, use recyclable bags, and am diligent about composting and recycling. Swapping out paper towels for microfiber cleaning cloths and using reusable shopping bags are easy to implement strategies as well.

I’m attempting to make our house more eco-friendly, even though my husband thinks I’m crazy. Your blog helps me find ways to improve things without breaking the bank – we just bought our first house in June and I was so excited to install the dual-flush water saving components on our toilets! Next up is the DIY cleaning solution with vinegar. I’m starting small, but at least I’m starting!

We use cloth napkins, and old tshirts ripped into narrow lengths to clean our house – no paper! We also use apple cider vinegar/water as our cleaning agent for the home. It works wonders! We also compost, which makes for some beautiful flowers and yummy veggies from our garden.
We use a Brita filter so no plastic water bottles in our home – just reuse the same metal bottles over and over. We also buy in bulk to reduce packaging.
We shop local and seasonal too!

We are fortunate to live in a pretty green town. We have solar powered trash compactors on the streets downtown. You pay $1/bag for trash pick up, but recycling is picked up for free. In the fall, they use a huge vacuum to suck up all the dead leaves that we’ve raked to the curb, saving bags (and back-breaking work!). The city must increase its percentage of hybrid or electric cars in its fleet each year. And for every tree taken down by construction, the university plants 2 more.

I’m really trying to get rid of all the toxic chemicals in the house and making my own cleaners/cleansers. Dr. Bronner’s castille soap is great too – we use it in the bathroom for hand soap and it doubles as a face wash.

I’m slowly phasing out all non-eco friendly cleaning products, recycling more, actually remembering to use my canvas bag for groceries, and have been researching composting. And, sort of related, yesterday I spent all afternoon touring local farms in my area so I could see where all the food I buy at farmers markets is coming from.
