This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I’ve been making use of Best Buy’s Electronics recycling. What a great service you can trust to do the right thing with that broken DVD player or retired cell phone!

This isn’t too original, but I’ve been making a conscience effort to buy local food or if not possible to buy organic.

GREEN ME! Love the prize package. Going to click around the site. We stopped fertilizing our lawn when we moved in because we live on a creek. So, no chemical wash off.

GREEN ME….
We have been using biodegradable bags for when we walk our 2 English Bulldogs. http://www.biobagusa.com I feel great not using those plastic grocery bags that will sit in a landfill forever.
Tracy says
GREEN ME- For the last few weeks, I’ve been bringing my own bags to the grocery store. It’s not much, but it’s a start!

We’ve been living green-ish for a while now, but this summer I’ve noticed I can see the electric meter as I walk to the car to leave home. I’ve trained myself to go back in and turn stuff off if the meter is spinning. Now that its been a couple of months since I started, I’m in the habit of turning everything off before I leave a room.

I recycle and have added some recycling bins at my work. I use reusable containers instead of water bottles and plastic baggies.
Anna Rafalski says
Green me, please! We compost, grow lots of our own produce, and are saving up for solar panels. We use vinegar to clean everything and don’t use paper towels – instead we use old undies (with crotch cut out) and t-shirts as cleaning cloths. We live in South Bend, IN and are loving the emergence of MANY community gardens in our area!
Kate (and Ben) says
“GREEN ME”
We’re still in the baby steps phase–reusable bags at the grocery store, energy-efficient bulbs, conserving our general use of energy in our house, small garden in the back for herbs and veggies, etc..

Green Me – Well, since I moved to Ithaca, I have started actually noticing how un-green I was before. I turn off the water more quickly, always use a cloth bag, my son’s preschool composted snack…pretty much anything you can think of.

I re-use those nice plastic containers that many restaurants are now putting their to-go food in, they make perfect tupper ware. I also use an empty milk gallon bottle for when I fertilize my succulents, it’s the perfect 1 gallon size for me to gauge how many drops of fertilizer to use.

GREEN ME!!!!
Vinegar or sometimes lemon juice and baking soda can clean about anything. Plus the foamy 4th grade volcano action is fun!

I conserve water by showering every other day. Okay, I actually have 10-month old twins so showering is a luxury. In reality, I use a cloth bag every where I go. Craft store, library, shopping, I never get plastic.

This is a great giveaway! We have a farm share, try our best not to waste, use rags instead of paper towels, are minimalist in our possessions, and plan to cloth diaper after the initial month or so of 7th generation diapers.

My husband and I just moved into our first home so we’re constantly looking for new ways to be green and to help us save money while we’re at it. A few (small) things that we currently do is sign up for paperless billing, try to unplug all appliances when not in use, and carpool whenever we can. I can’t wait to read everyone else’s comments for new ideas!
Melissa says
Green Me! We have stopped using paper towels altogether–now we use cloth napkins, recycled sponges, and tea towels.

My husband and I only have one car (lucky us, we live in an area with easy-access public transportation!) and rarely use it. We also use eco-friendly paper products and reusable grocery bags (they’re so much easier to carry anyway!).
Leah @ L4L says
GREEN ME! Wow! I’m in love with those rugs! <3 swoon! My most common (and easy) eco-friendly tip is reusable bags for everything!
Leanne says
Green Me!!! We are taking small and large steps to be green. In our new home we have low-flow showers and toilets, and a programmable thermostat to keep our heating/cooling costs down, along with ceiling fans in each bedroom. We use fabric napkins, reusable water bottles, and bring our own bags to the store. We also try to shop locally and support our CSA with a weekly farm share to further encourage more sustainable/local farming.
Erin J says
Green Me! We’ve talked about a rain barrel for quite some time, but a good quality version that is also esthetically pleasing can be really expensive. We finally just put a big plastic garbage can at the end of the drain pipe on the corner of the house that is shielded from view by trees and brush. Now, we’re saving rain water and the “barrel” is out of view!
Jules says
Green Me! Per John’s previous lawn posts we’ve been going much greener outdoors! Hoorah!
Sarah Webb says
Green Me! Please!
Lindsay Young says
GREEN ME! I love my reusable grocery bags and appreciate online/paperless billing.

We have FSC certified floors, all energy-efficient light bulbs, organic cotton sheets, towels and laundry detergent, we open the windows more than we use our air, have low-flow showers and toilets, we have a rain barrel AND vermicompost system. But there is always another way to GREEN ME! *Amy

Last fall, I bought myself (and my husband!) several reusable shopping bags from Envirosax. They’re super easy to carry, and they hold so much in just one bag! We use those bags several times a week.
It feels great to know how many plastic bags my family is NOT using!

We’ve been reducing our paper towel use a lot by using more cloth kitchen towels. We just toss them on top of the washer when they’re dirty, and when one of us does laundry we put the kitchen towels in, too.

GREEN ME! As a teacher I am always trying to reduce waste. Recently one of my co-teachers asked her students to do a recyclable California State Mission project. One of her students made a Mission out of cake! It was fantastic! What a great way to not waste materials and a yummy treat for 4th graders!

GREEN ME! These are great products. I just bought some cleaning rags from Norwex that all you have to do is use water to clean!
Christy says
Green me! We had a baby this year too, so we’re even more mindful of what products we use and wear. We started using only homemade, non-toxic cleaners in our home a few years ago, and we love it. We like to use recycled newspaper to clean glass and mirrors and recycled glass pasta sauce jars on our dryer to collect loose coins, buttons, and clothespins. We look for a use for glass containers before we recyle them, and we almost always find one! We use cloth diapers and cloth wipes for our little one, and I use organic olive oil as a makeup remover and moisturizer. We are also more mindful of buying products that use less packaging and are recyclable (i.e – meats wrapped in paper rather than on styrofoam trays, packages with less plastic, etc.). This not only cuts down on waste, but also cuts down on excess clutter. We love your blog!

Well, I live in a city that touts itself as one of the greenest around so I’m always finding interesting green stuff. Most recently though, my husband and I built three compost bins and will be downgrading our trash service to the smallest container possible. I had no idea how much could be composted and eventually turned into usable soil for our new garden beds!
jill says
Our biggest step to going green was selling our car. It’s a challenge, especially with our 6 month old baby, but the benefits (cost savings, exercise and more) outweigh those!
