This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Current project: I just moved into a new apartment that doesn’t have recycling bins or pick up (ugh, working on getting the landlord to do something about that…). In the mean time, I’m trying to come up with a system and containers to sort recyclables that’s easy on the eyes (and bank account), since the only place there is room to do it is in the corner of my dining room – which means it can’t take up a lot of floor space, either. Suggestions would not be turned down!

We recycle even in a city where there’s no official recycling program! On our way grocery shopping every week, we drop off our recycling at an independent recycling location.

I always use recyclable bags when I’m shopping and and starting to make my own green bathroom and kitchen cleaners. I also want to make a rain barrel next spring and use the water to water our garden.

Green Me!! We take reusable bags to every store we go to (in addition to the grocery store), we use our car once a week to run errands and use public transit the rest of the time, and we swap (and if needed, beautify) hand-me-downs from family and friends.

“GREEN ME!” Switched to vinegar and pick my husband’s recyclables out of the trash when he “forgets” to put them in the recycling bin.

just last night i found a whole PILE of stuff in a dumpster outside a local boarding school. my housemates and i went back with a minivan and collected all we could, but alas about 3 more car loads were left – beds, mattresses, lockers, all sorts. the URL is a link to one of my blog posts, i have about five posts relating to this project. but today i sorted everything: 8 suitcases, 8 bags, 9 stuffed animals, 3 loads of clothes, 2 duvets, 6 laundry bags, 8 pairs of shoes, 18 binders, 15 books (6 of which belong to the school’s own library!), 12 notebooks, and a whole bunch of other stuff. the first step was to donate an old pair of prescription glasses to Vision Express for their project in Africa. so, please, GREEN ME!, because i wish i could have gone back for the other car loads.

We’re giving a shot to composting. With just the two of us, there isn’t a whole lot of food waste, but out nasty clay soil can DEFINITELY use the help composting would give!
I’m also in the process of painting and refurbing a couple of freebie pieces that don’t currently fit our style. I suppose recycling furniture is “green.” :)

We go without heat in the winter. But we live in Phoenix so it isn’t that hard, but we have turned it into a competition with friends and family to see who can last the longest 2 years in a row for us!

We’ve switched to paperless billing, and signing up for the DNC list. We’ve seen a substantial decrease in our junk mail, and when we do get it, we cut it into thick strips and use it for kindling for our fireplace in the winter.

We recycle, and I try to bring reusable bags to every store I go to. If I can’t, those plastic bags do double duty for litter box cleanup!

We’ve also done the standard stuff, energy efficient light bulbs, turning lights and computers, tvs off when not in use, canvas bags as much as possible but we’ve also limited the kids shower time to a 2 song (on the radio)limit and that’s actually made a huge difference!
Beth says
Green Me! I use a big wastebasket for recycling and just a little wastebasket for trash. It helps to keep me mindful.

My tip: check with your city or waste management company to make sure you’re recycling as much as possible. My parents can only recycle #1 and #2 bottles, but I can recycle all rigid plastics #1-#7, even the yogurt cups! I was able to put a lot more in my recycle bin once I found that out.

I love those soda glasses. Reminds me of the ones at my grandmother’s house. Love your blog — so inspirational.
Thanks!

Green me! I have totally given up on paper products for cleaning, and gone strictly cloth. I’m trying to get a movement going in the area for paper recycling as well as plastic and glass, but so far nothing.

My husband and I are fanatics about using the reusable grocery bags. We have gotten to the point where we will give them to people who have not tried them yet.
We also just got back from New Zealand, talk about at green friendly country. Their drinking water come from the rain water they collect in big wells, and their household use water comes from near by streams or rivers. It is definately a place everyone needs to go and visit in their lifetime.

I like to take preztels every day for lunch, so instead of getting a new ziplock for them everyday, I use the same one. I also purchased a set of pyrex to use instead of big gallon sized ziplocks for cookies and snacks.

GREEN ME…please! :)
I try to teach my students about being green by doing what we can here at school…turning off the lights when we leave our room, re-using materials for classroom projects, and recycling EVERYTHING we can. Last year we even started something called the “Green Team X-treme” in our class. The kids made posters to hang around the school to share tips for green living!

Make a conscious effort to buy products with packaging that actually can be recycled. You’d be surprised at how many products are not recyclable!!!

Our whole blog is about being organic, green and eco-friendly–even though we’re very broke newlyweds! Biggest tip was to cut paper towel use by cutting up old t-shirts, making them into rags, and using for cleaning. Eco-friendly AND saving big bucks by not buying paper towels! love it!

Green me!! What an exciting give away, awesome stuff!
I recently did a little research on our trash companies recycling program and found out they take ALL plastics now instead of just one and two. They never mailed any information out to customers about it so I’m glad I checked! Our recycle bin now runneth over and I’m very proud of that fact. Also, I cut microfiber rags down into smaller sizes to use for wiping counters, etc in the kitchen and use WAY less paper towels now. One roll can last us for months!
