This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We do everything from recycling, walking, using reusable lunch bags & snack wraps to cleaning with vinegar, carpooling & upcycling clothes.

We just started “NO PAPER TOWEL/PAPER NAPKIN unless reaaaally necessary” policy at our house. With 1 toddler and 1 infant, it’s more work to clean all the mess with cloth towels but we feel so much better eco-wise and also moneywise!
We still have the same paper towel roll from months ago.
This is easy to try and actually quite fun.

Mine is actually kind of a beef. We recycle so much that its annoying when the recycling truck only comes every other week, while the garbage truck comes once a week. What’s the deal? Our garbage is never full, even after two weeks, but our recycling is full to the brim after one!

I use the water from the dehumidifier to water my house plants.

Our big thing is that we share a car. I walk the mile to work, and we simply adjust our lives around each other’s needs. The past 2 weeks, we’ve borrowed an extra car from his parents and we hate it! We knew that the one-car thing was great for the environment and our budget, but we hadn’t yet realized how great it was for our marriage!

I used to be far more “green”. Rode my bike to work, bought local food in bulk from farmer’s market/co-op, line dried laundry, etc.
Baby plus working full time has definitely changed many of our habits. But we still compost :)

Green me! My town started making us pay for trash, but not recycleables. So my husband and I recycle EVERYTHING to reduce the amount of trash to throw out. We used to throw out two large trashbags a week, but now we’re down to one every two weeks.

I recently went to my cousin’s wedding, and the bride is very environmentally conscious and tried to incorporate that into the wedding. The wedding and reception were held at the Audubon Center, and the couple purchased a bunch of carbon offsets to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of all the people flying in for their wedding. The wedding favors were lucky bamboo, and the paper for the invites, menus, etc, were all on recycled paper.

Green me! What cute stuff. I try in little ways to make differences, such as catching rain water to use in my plants when it is super dry like right now.

I am a freelance designer, and I’ve recently starting using only printing companies that print with soy based inks. I’m loving that so far!
We have also switched over to more earth-friendly cleaning products at home, which my nose loves!

I love your website, just recently found your website and have been reading the old posts like there’s no tomorrow!
I’ve stopped using plastic bags and always go out armed with a cute tote bag. We recycle and don’t use hot water cycles in our washing machine. We have small fans around the house and open up the windows, the a/c runs very rarely.
We reuse every plastic container and save every glass jar and find a way to reuse them!

I compost, recycle, and attempted an organic garden this year. I also LOVE Jerry Baker’s Green Gardening tips and his concoctions to put on my weeds or grass or fruits & veggie gardens. I have a plethora of reusable grocery bags for all my shopping. Finally, it takes a while for the hot water to come through in our house, so I put a bucket to catch it in the shower and use it on our garden or in the washing machine or to water the grass sometimes.

We have gone paper towel free in our kitchen, use tupperware, or pyrex for all lunches, etc., we use cloth diapers, we compost, we grow lots of our own food, we have our own free range chickens, a rain barrel, we bathe our two boys together, try to eat local as much as possible, and I pretty much only use vinegar to clean…

Holy cow what a giveaway! My favorite green tip is to air dry laundry–it saves me money because I don’t have to pay the extra $1.25 per drying cycle, keeps my clothes looking better longer, and helps out good ol’ Momma Earth by reducing electricity usage and waste.
Kate says
Green Me!! Wow, what an amazing prize pack! I’m crossing my fingers and toes that I’ll win!
We just started composting this summer. It’s been nice to have fewer newspapers and kitchen scraps to pack into our tiny trashcan!

The usual – reusable bags, cloth napkins, reusable coffee mugs, CFLs (not all…I don’t like the light, although they’re getting better. We strategically use them throughout the house)…also washing clothes with cold water, throwing sponges in the dishwasher so they last longer, composting, riding bikes instead of driving, packing more insulation up in our attic, buying local, buying things with less packaging…just being aware and making a statement through conscious consumption.
And we happen to live in a really green town, Decorah, Iowa – lots of people living off the grid, use alternative energy, buy local, that kind of thing. We even have a green festival, DigIN (Decorah Iowa Green INitiative) http://www.digindecorah.com/

We are cloth diapering (and even found a daycare that will let us use them there). In an attempt to be extra green (and cheap!) we bought all of our diapering supplies used — either through our local Nashville cloth diaper service (smilemommy.com) or from other parents on diaperswappers.com.

My husband and I recently moved into a townhouse (we had been renting before) and we’ve been able to make a lot of changes, big and small. We have two large compost bins out back, we grow some of our own veggies in a teeny-tiny patch (to be expanded next season) and are part of a CSA. And we’re always looking for ways to repurpose things we or our family members already have.
Thanks for you fantastic blog!

To be more eco-friendly, I tear tissues and paper towels in half before using them. The tissues are too big for one use, so I leave the other half for the next morning. Paper towels, I split with my husband, so we use one instead of two.

I’ve been trying to make small changes lately. Making sure my husband recycles EVERYTHING we can (he’s never been very good at that), using wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, using more washable clothes instead of paper towels for cleaning, and using more natural cleaners in general. I’m still an infant when it comes to being green, but I figure that every baby step helps!

I always keep my cloth grocery bags in the car so we never need use paper/plastic bags. I also turn the water off while I’m lathering my hair in the shower. Then I turn it back on when I rise it out.
