This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I don’t own a car (I walk to work), which saves the environment, saves me tons of money every year AND the unbelievable hassle of finding parking in the beautiful city of Philadelphia (ever seen Parking Wars?) :-)

Green Me! Our latest green act was starting a compost, and with our newest addition, our 20 day old son, we started cloth diapering!

GREEN ME! I’ve been buying virtually all of my boys’ pants (and a lot of other clothing) at thrift shops since they were small – saves the earth, and saves me money!

I always try to recycle old furniture before buying new. There’s almost nothing a little refinishing or new hardware can’t make beautiful!
Mary says
Green Me! (please:)
I have been using up all of my harsh chemical household cleaners and are replacing them with lavender-scented vinegar, baking soda (an AMAZING cleaning solution,) and borax. Also, did you know that you can use Epsom salts for loads of things…including lawn and plant fertilizer?

We recycle everything that we can. And I take a Nalgene bottle full of water with me everyday instead of buying water. And we plan on using cloth diapers with our baby girl who is due in 25 days! :)

Green me! I have begun using reusable cloth menstrual pads. Many cloth diaper companies also sell these, plus there are many work-at-home-mom ones available!

Green Me! This year we started a compost bin in our yard and got the whole family reusable water bottles. We continue to recycle and bike as much as possible too.

GREEN ME!
I am an avid recycle of anything I can justify against the city rules of recycling. But I was disappointed when I found out that the compostable cups that you mentioned in the last post still take quite some time to break down and a my city recycling center didn’t accept them. I thought I could use them as a motivation to start composting at home but they really are for industrial composting. At least that is what I found out a year ago. If you have any updated info, I would love to hear it.
Thanks and love! the blog.

We have installed dual flush toilets in the house. The best thing was that the complete purchase was free after water distric and city rebates.
Kyle says
AHHHH! GREEN ME PLEASE! :)
There aren’t a lot of recycling opportunities where I live so we try to save the plastic bottles that we use and then whenever I fly back home, I take a suitcase full back with me.

I have bins in the closet to sort recyclables as I go. So easy!

This is an awesome give-away.
We are greening our house by installing new windows of the low E variety. We’ve also been keeping doors and windows open to catch the lovely sea breeze instead of turning on the air conditioner. I think we turned it on maybe 2 times the entire summer.

GREEN ME – pretty please!

Awesome prize, esp since I’m in the market for 2 more area rugs!
In green news: this summer we grew veggies, started a compost bin, and began making our own laundry detergent! And on Saturday, I made a late summer bouquet for free by clipping some leafy branches & ornamental grass gone to seed from our own garden. It looks lovely in my fav vase on the living room coffee table!

With a new baby in the house, I am making the transition to all natural cleaners. The house small nicer, and I don’t have to be as worried about little fingers reaching bottles under the sink.
Ashley G says
GREEN ME! I have switched to mostly green personal care products and love Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild!
Katie says
Green Me!
I’ve switched to homemade laundry detergent. It’s not only cheap (I make a huge 5 gallon tub for under ten dollars) but I like knowing that our clothes are being washed with a natural, gentle soap. It also lets me put whatever scent I want in – so I do a combo of Orange and Lavender. Sounds a little weird, but it smells fantastic.

Me and my wife share a car, and use public transportation to get to work.
Mara says
Wow, seriously love this gift! I think the two easiest “green” things I do are use a rain barrel and compost. Neither requires much effort or thought and my garden is happier for both (and so am I when we get the water bill).

Mara says
Green me!
Just realized I didn’t follow directions – so here’s yet another tip – I save every scrap of paper or cardboard that enters my house for my kids’ art projects. It all gets reused, that’s for sure.
Beth says
Green me!
When we moved out of our respective big cities to the same small city a year ago, some green options shrank (bye-bye, public transportation!) while others improved (hello, garden!). Over the last year, we’ve managed to maintain a one-car limit household, plan our meals around weekly trips to the farmers’ market, and compost an incredible amount in the recycled plastic pickle barrels we’re using for compost bins. This year we want to step it up with a bigger garden, some home canning, and home-made cleaning products (as soon as we use up the old bottles). But that’s as far as ambition has taken us yet, and we’re looking for ideas for next year!

Our town does not recycle (can you believe it?) so we always collect our items and go WAY out of our way to get them recycled :)

GREEN ME! I have become obsessed with using tupperware/reusable plastic containers for all things lunch-related, in lieu of sandwich-sized Ziploc baggies (which are oh-so-tempting). Sometimes I tote four or five of them in with me to work!
Janna says
GREEN ME! I ride my bike to work most days, use re-usable grocery bags and am slowly switching over to natural cleansers.

My husband and I recycle as much as possible. WE also walk to all our local stores as much as possible – I love to walk!
katee says
Green Me! My children and I walk or ride bikes as much as possible. We also recycle. The city we live in FINALLY started curb recycling due, in part, to an eagle scout. YES! If I forget to recycle something my oldest is on me and takes the recyclables out to the blue recycle can!

In my household, we’re all about green living. We recycle everything possible, try to buy in bulk, use SIGG water bottles, wash all our laundry in cold water, use natural home cleaners (vinegar/water/baking soda) instead of chemical-based ones, buy organic when possible, had a tankless water heater installed, AND just had a ductless AC system installed in our attic master bedroom. Whew. You guys definitely inspire us to live more greenly :)
