This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

My partner and I recently stopped buying paper towels. It’s been a bit of an adjustment because we didn’t realize how often we used them until they were no longer at our disposal. We picked up some reusable cleaning rags and have no intention of going back. Small steps… small steps…

After living in Ithaca (the greenest place I’ve ever been) I feel downright guilty if I throw away anything that can be recycled. Styrofoam peanuts make me feel the worst so I do what I can to reuse them in crafty projects, plant drainage, or repackaging of delicate items.

GREEN ME! I recently started to free our household of excessive papertowel useage. We now have lots of rags (cut up t-shirts) located in the kitchen to mop up or clean the counters. I also added a little basket under the sink to collect the dirty rags for a quick trip to the laundry when it’s full. Seems to be working, but unfortunately, we are still occasionally use the paper version. BUT we’re trying!
Brigette Swafford says

GREEN ME! not only am i an adamant recycler, but i have started using lemon and vinegar for home cleaning rather than a million different chemicals.

I know it is not rocket-science, but purchasing 15 small, white kitchen towels and keeping them in a drawer that is easily accessible has cut my paper towel usage to a ridiculously low number. I NEVER thought I could do it. I have two (messy) kids. :) I literally feel so good with every wipe of a face/counter/hand/milk spill.

I’m not sure how ‘green’ these things may be, but since I had my baby I clean with Mrs Myers cleaning solutions. I also make all of my son’s foods from fresh (or frozen organic) fruits and veggies (re-using baby food jars). It’s easier than I thought it would be and he loves it!

GREEN ME!!! I love this giveaway! It seems that the garden-in-a-bag Italian Parsley is actually Cilantro…AKA Mexican Parsley.
Anyway, I re-use the plastic grocery bags that I acquire when I forget to pack my re-usable cloth bags, I recycle Aluminum, glass, & Plastic. And I always try to find ways to keep things out of landfills such as making throw pillows or handbags out of old clothing. I also shop at thrift stores and garage sales for furniture and decor. And I throw food scraps out into the wooded area alongside my apartment for the wild animals that live in the area.

I’m really conscious of how much paper I use in an office environment that requires I print stuff out constantly. I’ve started an in-office recycling program. (Nothing fancy – just an extra spot for paper I can then take to the recycling place near me). It makes me feel so much better!

We did away with disposable sponges and instead use reusable dishcloths that have a scrubby side to them. We also recycle, use tap water instead of bottled, cool our home off by opening the windows, and hang laundry.

One of my tips is to unplug all appliances not being used (except, say things with clocks to set) to avoid the whole energy vampire thing. According to Energy Star, about 40% of your energy bill comes from appliances that aren’t being used but are just plugged in! Unplugging things like your toaster, your coffee maker, your electric toothbrush charger can save 5-25% off your total bill!

“GREEN ME” … We try to eat locally. We shop at the local farmer’s market and have a little garden out back. Most of our veggies come from these places. And we just stepped it up a bit: We started buying our eggs locally as well.

have been a recycler in certain areas for years but learning to do more & more.
we refill a bottle of water from home instead of buying bottled water every time we go out.
for every get together, use plastic or ceramic plates. so no more disposable plates in our house – last 2 years.
have energy efficent front loading laundry machines. love the fact that they use so little amt of water.
brought 2 rain barrels recently to attach to our new house. did our own vegetable gardening – 5-6 varieties of vegetables last year. planning to do it again.
brought a hybrid – can see the difference already. gas bill is down to half.
Thanks !

We compost religiously and have worked out a system with our gardeners (we live in a townhouse complex) where they use all natural fertilizers as well as pick up our clippings/garden remnants to add to their own compost heap once a week.

I recycle ALL the time. I use the paper bags I get from the grocery store as wrapping paper for birthday’s and Christmas (I turn it inside out so it is just brown with no lettering). And I am trying to eat as organically (and financially) as possible!
Valerie says
GREEN ME, Please! Since we moved into our first home, it is easier than ever to be green. Growing our own herbs and vegetables, eating at home a lot more are two easy examples. But, my husband recently inspired me when he asked me start saving glass jars (like pickle jars) for him to store nails and screw in on his workbench. Once I saw how useful they can me, I kept saving the glass jars and using them to store rice and lentils from open bags, office supplies, and match books (we had a ton floating around different random drawers in the house. Thanks hubby (and YHL) for the green-nspiration.

We just watched No Impact Man last weekend, so that was pretty inspirational. I’m sorry to say that I will not go without toilet paper, but we’re definitely making more of an effort to buy food at the farmers’ market, recycle more, drive less, etc.

The last time my lease was up, I looked at a ton of potential apartments, but I settled on a place that does door-to-door garbage and recycling collection every single night! This is amazing to me because the county I live in has no curbside recycling program, and so many people here don’t recycle because it’s not convenient. I love that my apartment complex cares about the Earth and makes recycling so simple.

I just moved to a house with free recycle pick up. we now recycle everything (almost). In the spring we will look into a compost, but we have bears where I live so it has to be bear proof.
