This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

My mom taught me one of the best green tips ever as a kid…using newspaper to clean glass. She learned it when she worked cleaning the glass cases in a china shop when she was in college. It actually cleans better than paper towels! I was in college myself before I realized most people DON’T use newspaper to clean glass….I thought everyone did!

Inspired by YHL, lately I’ve been trying to convert to some greener ways. I’m no where near where I want to be, but I’ve switched to eco friendly laundry detergent and household cleaners, among a few other measures. I’m still trying to get into the routine of going the green route instead of falling back on my regular (non-green) ways. I love this company, by the way, I looked on their website and they have so many great things!!

We’re infants in the green world, we use fabric bags for shopping and use vineagar and water for nearly all our cleaning. We don’t use our AC in the summer?

Green Me! Our apartment complex just started recycling, so we are doing that now!

I use reusable shopping bags and recycle everything my city’s recycling program allows us. I also cut up my family’s worn out or outgrown T shirts to make reusable cleaning and dusting cloths.

We’ve recently switched to cloth napkins for every day, instead of just fancy dinners. Minor, but every little thing counts!

Green Me! I started a recycling program at work! :)

The only tip I can think of that not everyone and their mom may know is that metal bottle caps are recyclable! I didn’t know this until recently and would just trash them. Now they go into the bin with the cans and plastics!

I live in LA and there are always people going through our trash to salvage recyclables, my fiancee and I decided to save our recyclables for a local woman and her family. We’re all green in the process and she is able to make some green ($$). Yay humanity!

We recycle, EVERYTHING. We compost. I quit drinking sparkling water so that I am not adding to the plastic water bottle problem. We try to buy all of our veggies local or grow our own.

I have my own little herb garden on my windowsill….it’s kind of failing to thrive but it does ok. I also try to park on the first floor of parking garages instead of trekking to the top, to save gas fumes.

I am a huge advocate for recycling at my work. In fact from our day camps we recycle juice pouches with Terracycle who turns the juice pouches into cool products like bags and pencil cases.

I think the biggest thing I’m working on right now to stay green (I live in an apartment building in Manhattan, just about the most efficient place you can live – no car, no A/C, and we have radiator system heating!) is that I’m fixing my radiator! It seems like a small thing, but it will make a difference!

We have a little pot full of herbs on our patio now, and my husband is creating a raised garden for me! I’m so excited. We recycle, don’t use toxic pesticides/herbicides on our lawn and plants, and I gave all of my Teflon non-stick cookware to goodwill and replaced it with stainless steel and cast iron. All my plastic food storage containers went in the recycling and I replaced those with Pyrex glass ones. No more chemicals in my kitchen!! And I try to get gently used items instead of new whenever I can.
Sarah Jane says
GREEN ME because I check local recycling rules (and follow signage on public bins) to ensure that I do not inadvertently contaminate a whole load of recycling. Encourage your local representatives to institute single stream recycling; the easier it is for people to recycle, the more they will!

We’ve just moved to Oxford, England, and even the bus companies here boast about how “green” they are. Here, recycling is expected; I even saw an article in the paper the other day about a company being sued for “overpackaging” their product!

I think the greenest thing I have done in the last 10 minutes is clean up some dog puke from the living room rug using a rag instead of paper towels (which we don’t buy anymore anyway). Never fear, it will be washed in VERY hot water.

We just replaced a 1970s water heater with a tankless unit, and we’re about to have solar panels installed! Besides that we reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost– in that order.

We try to make green and sustainable choices as much as we can. Our newest opportunity is how we diaper our newborn. We are using Seventh Generation diapers until he is big enough to fit into his Flip brand cloth diapers. Better for his delicate skin, and better for the earth.

We have always been big recyclers but we do not have any glass recycling bins in our community. A couple weeks ago my husband and I purchased a bin from home depot. We now recycle all colors of glass in our home and drive it to the nearest recycling center.

We use home-made cleaning products and reusable grocery bags, and we have lots of hand-me-down furniture that we’ve rehabbed and updated ourselves, rather than buy new stuff. It’s great to be green!
