This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Tough, bad habits die hard! But try to use reusable grocery bags as much as we can.

Since moving up to Flagstaff for school, I’ve been trying to be more green little by little. For example, I’ve been bringing a reusable bag with me to the student union when I plan on just taking dinner back to my room. That way, they don’t have to give me a plastic bag to carry it in.

I just installed a clothesline in our backyard and have been line drying all my bed linens. Eliminates need to iron, and they smell fantastically fresh.

We recycle, use reusable bags when shopping, use green cleaning supplies and try our best to re-use and repurpose whatever we can.

GREEN ME! I’m a new blog reader and love it! We recently started using dryer balls (purchased on etsy) instead of dryer sheets.

I love that our town has so many parks and walking trails so that people have the option to get closer to the environment for an afternoon out.

This is the best giveaway I’ve seen in the blogosphere for quite some time. All of those things are lovely!
I’m a college student who is going green in little ways that add up—using natural cleaning supplies, driving my vehicle less, using reusable grocery bags, recycling, and upcycling clothes and furniture.
Also, my college has a bus system that runs throughout campus and the town. This year they just debuted their hybrid buses, which is pretty cool. :)

GREEN ME!! I am a school teacher (kindergarten) and we paint a lot!! I have enlisted all of my girlfriends with young kids to save their Gerber plastic food containers for my kiddos at school to use as paint containers! Then all we do is rinse and reuse!! EASY for me and saving the environment by not putting the plastic in landfills! We also use old plastic bottles as ice-packs
Valerie says
GREEN ME!!
Started using reusable veggie and fruit bags at the grocery store – no more wasting a million plastic bags every month for fresh food!
Alissa says
GREEN ME! Besides using our fabric shopping bags (when I remember them), I have no good tips on being green. But I sure am inspired by all these great comments!
Jess says
GREEN ME – I’ve always been really conscious of recycling in my home and now I’m encouraging my co-workers to do the same. For Halloween this year, I convinced management to give everyone a Tervis tumbler so we stop using styrofoam cups!

Green me! We have reusable grocery bags, 2 hybrid cars (wish we lived in a better public transportation area), recycle cans, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard at home, use freecycle (freecycle.org) for unwanted/wanted items and paperbackswap (paperbackswap.com) to get rid of old books and pick up new ones. I even made my own recycling bin on my desk for non-confidential papers which I empty once a week. We have about 1 kitchen bag worth of garbage a week including all diapering supplies from our little one (oh how we wish daycare would be negotiable on the disposable diapers).
Lisa says

The city finally delivered our recycling bin today after 6 weeks of nagging! No more trips to the recycling center (of course, planned with an errand in that part of town!) or sneaking our recycling into our neighbors’ bins after they put them out at night!!

Lately we have been focusing on recycling as much as possible, avoid purchasing new things. We are in need of new furniture and have decide to craigslist it instead of just tossing the old for new. We will be covering our old couch pillows with new fabric to make our new lounge pillows for the playroom. So, i guess we are in general focusing on recycling and re-purposing! (in fact i wonder if we can make use of the wood our old couch is made of too…)

I have been trying to incorporate “going green” into our house for a while now. I use green cleaning products, try to eat as many local foods as possible and shop at our farmers market, and I am trying really hard to kick that nasty paper towel habit of mine!

I have cut back on using plastic bags(the clothe ones are so much cuter anyway)! I also have to have my coffee in the morning so instead of buying it out I know take my coffee with me in my reusable cup!

MegM says
Green me! Oh, my, we’ve done so much, but it still doesn’t seem like enough. All of our cleansers are biodegradable and made from vegetable products, any paper towels that we do use (we, too, use rags these days) are made from recyclable materials, we grew a vegetable/herb garden this summer, I’m making an attempt at composting, we flush the toilet less, are putting in energy-saving windows, and are big farmers’ market/local shoppers…*gasps for air* We’re trying! I only wish there were more cost-effective eco-friendly clothing stores, but the reason it costs what it does is because it was made the correct, fair way. (sigh)
Danae says
GREEN ME! We have successfully given up paper towels and we are slowing paring down our cleaning products to all natural ones. We are taking baby steps but believe it’s all about the journey! :)

Count me in for using non-plastic grocery bags. I also buy super-concentrated “green” detergents that come in large sizes and I use the same pour spout over and over. Less waste than buying multiple plastic bottles for the same amount of cleaning.
Kim says

We just moved into a two story house and found that if we didn’t have a recycle bin on the second floor we were more likely to throw things in the trash instead. Now we have bins on both floors and our recycling far exceeds our trash. Next step is getting more disciplined about our food/yard waste collection.

This giveaway rocks! Besides recycling like crazy and being mindful of energy and water use, I always use reusable grocery bags. It’s good for the environment and we get a little money back from the store each time we use them!

Living in Berkeley, CA makes it easy to be green. We recycle and compost as much as we can, (the city composts all food and food-soiled paper products) and we look for items to purchase that have responsible packaging. Yay Earth!

I have been making braided bathmats out of old towels. Cut the towels into strips and make into bathmats using a variety of methods including something called locker hooking, and braiding the strips and sewing the braid into a braided rug. They are surprisingly nice and sturdy.
