This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We have been hanging our clothes out on the line to dry for the summer. In the winter our sunroom still gets a lot of heat and we just hang clothes on drying racks. It might just save a few pennies, but they really add up over time!

I went to school in Boulder, CO (Go Buffs!) and experienced the green Mecca that is Boulder. Recycling, reusing, composting, reducing, organic, free trade, they do it all!
Marcelle says
GREEN ME! I also just went to Ithaca and loved it!

I recycle, use re-usable water bottles and am planning to take a workshop on making my own rain barrel soon (which happened after reading your post about about the same thing a while back). I’m hoping to begin composting soon (using your DIY plastic tub how-to) as well as learn how to make/use homemade cleaners. I would love to win this prize to add some eco-chic to my house!

We compost and are seriously thinking of getting solar panels put on our house. We also have rain barrels set up for the garden as well as using only recycled stones and bricks outside (from the dump). We have about a 400% recycle rate compared to trash consumption, we only put out about a 3/4 full trash bag a week (13 gallon capacity). We do whatever we can to be green, love this giveaway!!
Kelly says
GREEN ME! We just made our own compost bins out of inexpensive wire garden fencing. They keep things nice and tidy, will be a big help when planting this spring, and look better than any bulky plastic version we’ve seen.

I haven’t had paper towels in the house for nearly a year, and don’t miss them at all. I’ve also been using Freecycle quite a bit lately to find new homes for my unwanted items.

I love this prize package! I try my best to minimize waste and recycle!
Alicia says

I’ve recycled for the 4 years I’ve lived in my house but my boyfriend’s apartment is serviced by a different waste management company that doesn’t recycle! We cheat and recycle them at my place instead of throwing them in the trash.

I’m definitely a little late to the game when it comes to the whole green thing. I am just now starting to swap out all of our cleaning products for more green ones such as the Mrs. Meyers products and the Martha Stewart line. I’m really enjoying not having all those nasty fumes around me when cleaning!

Next month we are installing a metal roof, which are often made from a minimum of 30% post consumer recycled metal content. Recycling metals also requires less energy. We are pumped!

To save energy we make sure the dishwasher is full before running it and don’t use the heated dry part of the cycle. We also re-use water glasses since they aren’t really dirty anyway and that saves even more room in the dishwasher.
Alicia says
GREEN ME We switched all our cleaning products to Method and we are super excited about the new antibacterial line (and Method products are on sale at Target). We also made the leap to swap paper towels for microfiber ones as well. For our next little one we plan on using cloth diapers as well.

I quit eating meat! It may sound minor but it is incredible the amount of resources go into feeding, raising, transporting etc. (and i’m dropping some weight so thats not so bad either!)
Adrienne says

The tastiest green thing I do is brew my own beer, reusing the same beer bottles each time. I also only use reusable shopping bags and make my own cleaning products.
Katie says

I always try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, like using cloth napkins, glass storage containers etc. My newest thing is my reusable water glass from bed bath and beyond. I comes with a reusable straw and everything!
Leigh-Ann says

I’ve stocked up on reusable shopping bags and try to use those whenever possible. If I can’t, we save the disposable bags from the store and use them as trashcan liners and whatever else we can.

My husband and I live and work in urban areas (Philadelphia and NYC) and are fortunate enough to be able to use public transportation both to commute and go out. We also do the usual recycling, reusable bags, organic food, etc. Our city of Hoboken, NJ just launched its own city-run car sharing program, too! What a great alternative to owning a car here!

My husband and I were just married in August and are finishing up the combining process of all our STUFF! We donated/free-cycled everything (clothes, shoes, kitchenwares and furniture). AND I’ve successfully broken my dear husband of the nasty plastic water bottle habit. Phew!

Omg! I love, love, LOVE this giveaway! Lets see what I can share about being green. My husband mows our lawn with a push mower. I repurpose/reuse glass bottles and containers. And thanks to your guys’ great info about cloth diapers we now plan on using them on our future little ones and saving a buttload!!

We use our own cloth bags and refillable water bottles. If we get plastic bags from the store, we use them as trash can and paint tray liners. Recycling and composting are a given. This year we planted two potatoes that had already sprouted rather than tossing them before leaving on a vacation – and we got a small harvest!

I recently moved to Denver, and love how a lot of small quick order restaurants (like sandwich shops, etc) have a big do-it-yourself recycling section, complete with pictures of which items should go in the recycling section, composting section, trash section, etc.

Last time I went to put gas in my hybrid Prius, a neighbor commented, “so you finally had to get gas?!” I average about 44.5 mpg. Still, I must have a heavy foot; a colleague gets almost 50 mpg in his hybrid.

We recycle all our glass, plastic and paper, and use recyclable bags. We also try to stay concious of turning off lights we’re not using.

GREEN ME! We recently purchased a used push reel mower. We used it once but realized the blades are in desperate need of sharpening. That will be our next project :]

My husband and I take green-ness very seriously in our household. Always carry a canvas or reusable bag with me for impromptu trips to the store, recycle EVERYthing we can, use travel mugs and BPA free waterbottles at my desk, always shut a light off when I leave a room at home… and the list goes on. I’m always looking for new ways to be “green”! Sometimes it’s harder since we live in NYC and rent our place, but we always do everything we can. And I love the tips I get from YHL!

We recycle and have an organic garden. Our 8 year old daughter AKA “Earth Girl” has so many ideas on how she contributes to the planet. I get the lecture from her every morning driving her to school saying how we are hurting the planet. OUCH!
Jackie says

We recycle everything we possibly can, use shopping bags at the grocery store, drink from stainless steel water bottles, and use natural light to brighten up our house as much as possible.
Martha says
Green me…I live on a farm so we recycle anything and everything that we can. From the manure in the barns (into the fields) to ensuring that runoff does not go into the river. We are all about staying green as farmers were the first environmentalist. : )

We recycle what we can to reduce our trash. We also try to donate clothes etc to charity and when we cleaned out the garage last week we stuck some freebies on our curb that would have gone to a landfill – and someone took it all! Our trash was indeed someone else’s treasure!!

I made some “cooler” napkins for my big kid to take with his lunch each day. I embroidered silly sayings or pictures on a few and they’ve taken the middle school world by storm. Other kids want them too. So, saved a tree or so at my house AND have convinced others to do the same, and I don’t even wear a cape.
