This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We’ve recently switched out all of our lightbulbs for the energy efficient ones. As much as I dislike the dim room when I flip the switch, I know that they are much better in the long run.

We use biodegradable dish soap (there’s an inexpensive store brand at safeway called “bright green”) and toilet paper made from recycled paper. I also walk to my second job, and we’re planning to use cloth diapers for our coming addition to the family. :)

We always use our reusable bags at the grocery store, we recycle, we have been a one-car family for a long time, and we try to do our best to conserve water and energy everywhere we go.

GREEN ME! I’ve been wanting to put up a clothesline to cut back on power usage…and to have fresh smelling clothes.

GREEN ME – I sew a lot, and I’ve started using used fabrics almost exclusively. The strength, stretch and shrinkage are already tested, and you can find a lot of unusual patterns. Other than zippers and thread, it lets me reduce, reuse and recycle … while remaining a clothes-horse ;)

Green me! I try and use reusable bags at the grocery store as well as other stores. If I’m just buying one or two things that I can carry, I tell them to skip the bag. Cooking from scratch = less waste. Recycling = less trash. Funny thing, I’ve been looking at their rugs for a while now but I can’t decide on the color & pattern…mainly cuz I want to match it with outdoor furniture that we don’t have yet. Their rugs are awesome!

I tried two things last month: I purchased special “cold water” detergent and washed all my laundry (except kitchen towels) in cold water. Previously I used warm, because if I washed in cold, I’d get these strange oily stains on my clothes. I also bought two drying racks to put on my deck and dried everything outside except my husband’s work clothes (I’ll pay a little for drying them in the dryer if it means I don’t have to iron them). I lowered our electric bill by almost $100 – and that was in the heat of August with our central air getting a workout! I wish our development allowed us to put up clothes lines – it would be so much easier to dry sheets and towels.

GREEN ME! No plastic bags or foil here– reusable lunch containers only!

We’re trying to be as green as possible in this house. Our veggie garden didn’t make it this year, but we have high hopes for next! Oh, and we’ve started using only Seventh Generation cleaners in the house!
Nicole says
Green me, PLEASE! You guys have really inspired me. I am loving your posts about cloth diapers (though I have no kids of my own!) And I love reusable bags, my mom has been using them for 20+ years, back when they weren’t the “in” thing! And…This past summer rented a community garden plot and grew lots of veggies for myself, friends, and family!

Well, I don’t have one at the moment because I am a simple graduate school student with limited funds and no home to use it in (haha)….BUT, I strongly recommend using a cistern. I plan on having one in my future home. It collects the rainwater from the roof through the gutters and deposits the water to a storage tank underground. From there the water can be pumped from the tank to either a filtration system for the water to be used in the house or to the outside to water plants and gardens.

We just recently move from the Atlanta, GA area to Monterey, CA and it is amazing how much “Greener” it is out here. I LOVE IT! For example, the waste management trash cans are a fraction of the size of the recycling bin!! The local Aquarium here is a huge endorser on greener ways of life. One of their exhibits points out that appliances that have clocks or any lights on them are wasting energy – if you aren’t using them, unplug them.
