This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I never drink all the water out of my daily water bottles (reusable, of course), so instead of dumping leftover water down the sink, I use it to water our house plants!

To be more green I am going back to the ways of my great grandma– I am growing my own vegetables and joined a gardening club to share heritage vegetable seeds and compost waste(my neighborhood won’t let me have chickens or I’d have 2 or 3 of them). I hang my laundry out to dry 80% of the time (the sun does WONDERS for your whites!)and I mow as much of my yard with a reel mower as I can. I still have to get a rain barrel for the garden but am waiting until I can get a recycled one!

Green Me! Living in the emerald city (seattle) certainly makes everything green… I’ve been buying planet friendly soaps, trying to reduce reuse recycle as much as possible
Sandra says
GREEN ME! I have been using vinegar for household cleaning and eliminated almost all of our cleaners. That pickled smell goes away after it dries and I feel good knowing it isn’t a substance that could hurt my children (like in those instances when they smear apples all over the table and then pick them up to eat them).

Just moved to a city so we left behind our cars and always take the subway! Also, love Seventh Generation products and turn off the lights when they’re not being used.

“GREEN ME!” Um, does making my 2 lil’ boys pee in the potty at the same time, avoiding an extra flush, count as being green?
Lee Golden says
GREEN ME! We stopped using plastic bags and started using cloth snack and sandwich bags (found on Etsy) for the kiddos’ school lunches. We do not buy paper napkins or paper towels anymore, we only use cloth napkins. For cleaning, I use our old, worn out t-shirts cut into rags. Our family drinks a lot of water, so we use Reduce water bottles (http://www.ireducebottles.com/product_assortment.htm).
Amber says
Green Me! I take reusable bags when shopping and have reusable water bottles too.

Something new we are doing – using old peanut butter jars for storing different sizes of nails, screws, etc. With a little munchkin at home, we always have peanut butter and with all of our projects, we always have leftover nails and screws.
And, our kiddo’s favorite toy is a plastic water bottle I got at a meeting (we don’t buy water in bottles) and I put a wine cork in it. She loves to shake it but she can’t get the cork out of it. So once I do, she puts it in and laughs. This can occupy her forever.

I’ve been trying to take small steps to go more green by using re-usable bags (that I crocheted myself) for shopping, but also as an art teacher I try to come up with fun projects that use recycled materials as often as I can.

Huge canvas sacks to the grocery store -easy habit to start. Try mixing some of Mrs. Meyers all-purpose cleaner with water in a spray bottle for the countertops. Delicious scent and no more buying the smaller plastic bottles. Best of all, my little boy has joined the recycle revolution. p.s. New roof looks great.

One way I reduce waste is to put a recycling bin in my bathroom along side the regular garbage- most of the bathroom waste ends up going into the recycling bin!

GREEN ME! WOW! I haven’t been this excited about a giveaway in a looong time. One quick tip I’d like to share is that we almost exclusively use scrap paper in our home printer (and the copier at my job). So what if we present a Michaels coupon printed on the reverse of credit card offer, or my students have to take a quiz on the back of a recycled time sheet from my husband’s job? It is a great way to cut down on all of the wasted paper (especially from junk mail!), and to save on buying copy paper. We’ve been doing this for years, and we probably buy no more than 2 reams of paper per year as a result. Simple, but definitely earth- and money saving!

I buy my books on betterworldbooks.com and when I am done reading, I pass on the books to other and ask that they continue it on, or donate to a library.
Also online there is a great site called atwestend.com that carries tons of great recycled home goods.
