This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

GREEN ME!!! I absolutely love to recycle…as weird as this sounds, one of my most favorite places on earth is the recycling area at the Henrico County Landfill! I just can’t help but feel good about taking a car load of “stuff” that I know will be recycled!

I’ve been using reusable products as much as I can-cloth shopping bags, cloth diapers, that sort of thing. I also have been trying to use less of everything I can, within reason. Usually products like laundry detergent suggest a much larger quantity than is really needed to to a good job cleaning.
After I use up the household cleaners I currently have, I am going to try making my own.

Since I bought a side-by-side trash bin & recycling bin nobody in my house has an excuse for throwing recyclables in the trash.

I try to only buy products with a minimum of packaging or with packaging that I can repurpose for other things. I reuse glass soda or beer bottles and wine bottles as vases or beverage carafes. I clean and reuse lidded sauce jars as food storage containers or drinking glasses, and small jars like baby food jars for spices. When I buy things in bulk I use reusable nylon bags and then transfer to my containers.
Bonus–The pantry looks so much prettier!

GREEN ME! I have found that most things around the house can be cleaned with some combination of vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda.

When we moved at the beginning of the summer our dryer plug didn’t match our new home’s outlet. We dried clothes on a line for several months. It was definitely extra work, but I also enjoyed the excuse to spend a little extra time outside. With colder weather coming on I finally rewired the dryer last month, but may still use the line occasionally.

I recently was given a “shower timer” to keep my water usage in check. It’s a pretty lean shower, but after a week or so of practicing, I’ve found I can be in-and-out in about 3 minutes most days.

We recently moved back to northern Michigan to find that they do SO much more recycling than we could while living in one of the ‘bigger cities’ in Michigan. We also are re-doing our house and have found so many ways to re-use pieces we originally tore out (i.e. slate tile that was in the kitchen, nook, and entryway is about to become our new patio)! And last, we’re MSU fans, so we’re always thinking ‘Go Green’! :) Love your blog!

I shop the farmer’s market for groceries and thrift stores for clothing and house stuff. We reuse all glass jars for storage in the pantry (labeling them with a sharpie pen that washes off when changing out the stuff inside) and plastic (mostly salsa and parmesan cheese) containers in the fridge for leftovers or lunch portions. Our kids collect glass and plastic bottles of “pay recycle” and that’s their pocket money. Cloth hankies instead of kleenex. Eco-friendly products. This is a great age for stylish and practical eco-friendly living–we are so lucky! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

Remember that it’s REDUCE, REUSE, then recycle. It’s in that order for a reason. Where I live I see a lot of recycling going on, but not much in terms of reduce and reuse. Bring reusable bags to the store with you, make sure to have a reusable water bottle (bottled water is evil), bring a travel mug to starbucks and they will fill it.

My eco tip – when I built my raised gardening beds, instead of using grass killer to kill the grass under my beds, I used about twenty layers of newspaper we had saved up. I placed it right over the grass, and then filled the beds in with the other soil and amendments. It worked great!
kel mcnichol says
GREEN ME! I try to look for ways to be more eco-friendly. So far I try to make sure my consumerism does not just end in the trash can: I rarely try to just throw anything away. I will hold a yard sale and give 1/2 money raised to charity. The remainder of the items get donated to shelters, half-way houses, friends-in-need, then whatever is still left gets taken to Good Will.

Please, please GREEN ME!!!!!
This year our major “green” project has been to replace areas of lawn with landscape beds filled with low-maintenance, water-wise plants. In my neighborhood (and most of our town) there are HOA rules you have to keep your grass watered and a “uniform” shade of green. In the 100+ degree summer temps, that can mean using a CRAZY amount of water. In putting in the areas of large landscape beds, we’ve reduced the area that needs to be watered constantly- and gained some absolutely lovely landscaping in return. I’ve never seen so many butterflies as we did this summer!

GREEN ME! I’m a little behind, but I actually just recently started recycling and have a compost bin that I’ve been working on.

GREEN ME! Next summer we’re planning on installing an attic fan in the house so we can rely less on the air conditioner. It’s not only good for the environment, but will save us money on our electric bill!

Just the basics: I walk everywhere and use public transportation, recycle (even when out and about, but thanks to my city’s new recycling bins in public places, this isn’t as tricky anymore), and use my own grocery bags. Oh – and more recently trying to further reduce my carbon footprint by eating less meat!
