This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

GREEN ME! I have been trying to be more on top of using reusable bags when I go to the grocery store! I always feel so much better when I do–plus, they are easier to carry then those small, plastic bag handles.

A friend shared a local produce calendar for my area (Atlanta) so that I can start buying only the produce that is in season. I also started an herb garden this summer to use more fresh herbs in recipes.
Alethea says
Green Me! We’ve got a pretty giant assortment of reusable grocery bags, and we never always keep at least a few in the car so we’re never without. It’s really cut down at plastic bag usage at our house!

In addition to using reusable grocery bags, my husband and I have recently switched to mesh reusable produce bags, so we are no longer getting the plastic bags at the grocery store to fill up on produce. We also no longer use paper towel and have switched to using only cloth towels and napkins in the kitchen.

I carry a reusable water bottle around with me EVERYWHERE. I’ll ask eateries to fill it up instead of using a paper cup. We also recycle all of the plastic bottles we use from our other groceries. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Borax for cleaning EVERYTHING… its not as harsh as regular cleaners and gets everything spotless. The best part… a big ol’ box of it is less than 5 bucks! Mine has lasted me 6 months and counting.

Our “going greenier” efforts include using reusable bags, cloth dipes, and cloth napkins. (My now-husband introduced me to the cloth-napkins-for-everyday habit back when we were dating. Try it, you’ll love it!) One really easy eco-tip: Avoid anti-bacterial soaps! (I think you guys have posted about that here.)
Thanks for the chance to win this awesome prize pack.

I continually use a water bottle instead of buying bottled water. Also, I have used vinegar to help clean my laundry for years.

We try to reuse as much as possible: glass jars, bags, resuable cloths, towells, bags, napkins, etc. I use hankerchiefs instead of tissues. We drink filtered tap water instead of bottled. We print only when encessary on used paper or double-side. We recycle as much as possible.

I bought a BPA-free (obv) travel cup for iced drinks. I use it ALL the time, for iced coffee, for water, for juice, soda, etc. Imagine all those cups that have avoided the trash in just a handful of weeks….

I’m always trying to up my eco-friendly efforts. I’ve been using cloth grocery bags for awhile, and I recycle like crazy. I’m waiting for my chemical cleaners and soaps to run out and then I plan to buy organic or make my own.

GREEN ME!!!! I keep three separate pull-out bins under my island for regular garbage, paper recyclables and glass/plastic/aluminum recyclables. It makes it super easy to recycle!

I’ve started taking additional non-recyclable items (that our local trash company won’t take away) to the public market (in Rochester, NY) to be recycled by a local organization that takes things like sneakers, items with certain #s, can tops, etc. and will take these items one step further to be recycled! :)

We have a small vegetable garden in our back yard and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our little boy or girl in just over three weeks (!) so we can start using our supply of cloth diapers.

I also use less detergent when washing our clothes. Just a 1/4 of what is called for is usually enough.

GREEN ME! My husband I approach our green-ness from different perspectives. My main concerns are related to food and cleaning; his concerns are related to commuting. He made a rule this summer that we had to bike to all locations that fell within a 2 mile radius of our house. I agreed. I worked dillegently to plant and maintain a mostly organic garden, reusing our coffee grounds to turn the soil and using my hands to get rid of weeds (instead of chemicals). We love other ways to be more green and incorporate sustainable practices into our lives–therefore we love the dedication YHL has to these practices.

To become more green I have started riding the bus and walking a lot more. I use reusable containers for my lunches. I also am composting and recycling more than ever!

GREEN ME! My husband and I installed a new, 95% efficient furnace in our house this past weekend. Green for the earth and some green for us too, since we did all the work ourselves (hubs is a gas-fitter, btw, so we did have some professional knowledge).

I was so excited I hit return before finishing my post. I NEEED that rug!
Things we have done in our household. Replaced cleaning rags and cleaning papertowels for newpapers flyers that come in the mail (we don’t get the paper daily). Starting using rags where newspaper wouldn’t work. We also clean with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Recycle all things paper, plastic and glass. And easier on the list, replaced our lightbulbs with energy effecient ones.

I try to be green and save $$ by using cloth napkins that I scored on clearance rather than using paper napkins. I am starting to “re-use” clothing where I can too. I just turned a skirt that I ripped into a pillow, an old t-shirt is becoming a skirt for my toddler and I turned a tablerunner into an apron (that my friend is selling to raise money for their adoption)!

we bring our commuter mugs to the coffee shop and our reuseable shopping bags to the grocery store.

Green me! I really have to really stop and think about how I’m green because so much is just a way of life… Recycling, composting, rain barrel, natural cleaners, reusable everything (okay, not toilet paper, that’s where the line is drawn!)… I may have to take the short trip into Culpepper one day and check out this fun store!
Tara says
GREEN ME! We’re trying to get away from buying bottled water. It’s been a tough transition, but we’re saving money and saving the earth one re-usable bottle at a time.

We always try to bring our reusable bags to the grocery store, and we rarely (if ever) throw away any plastic bags we do end up with. We usually take them to a place that recycles used plastic bags if we have somehow acquired too many.

We use the reusable bags for shopping as well as just toting stuff about instead of plastic bags. Also, I plan ahead on my meals, so that I either reduce the amount of time (and heat) being used, or have a meal that is ready on the fly.

I have discovered an awesome homemade eco-friendly bug killer. I’ve tested it out on ants and flies, and it kills really well, and keeps me from having to bust out the Raid. I just mix a couple of tbsp. of Dr. Bronner’s peppermint liquid castile soap into a 32 oz. spray bottle filled with water. Sometimes I mix it a little stronger if the ants are feeling particularly resistant to dying. Saves money and no toxic chemicals, which is great because I have cats and dogs that get into everything!

While we try to be green whenever possible (recycling, bringing canvas bags to the supermarket, etc.), our biggest challenge has been our landscaping – our yard was very overgrown when we bought the house, so while there are a lot of dead/dying plants to rip out, we have been taking care to save or relocate ones that are still viable.

We cloth diaper our babies (we’re on number two with the same set) and make our own household cleaners. We don’t live in a particularly eco-friendly town (limited recycling, too hot for gardening) but we’re looking forward to our next move where we can take on more go-green efforts.

And I just (completely unintentionally – as it wasn’t advertised as such) stayed at a green hotel for a week for work. Dual flush toilets, a/c that automatically shut off if the door was open, the works! I’ll definitely be staying there on return trips to the area. :)
