This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I’ve cut down on using plastic water bottles by purchasing and using a SIGG water bottle. It saves money in the end and cuts down on waste.

My green tips: I try to NEVER “throw away” water. If there is half a glass of water from the previous day or the morning, I use it to water my plants. We do not have recycling bins that are picked up w/the trash where I live so I keep a paper grocery bag by the garbage can at all times for which I collect paper. When it is full I drop it off at the nearest paper retriever bin (usually a church or library so that they can earn money). Lastly, we try to eat leftovers. I have never been, nor will I ever be, a lover of leftovers but it’s wasteful to throw away uneaten food but it’s also friendlier on my budget.

Sending jars and bottles to the recycling bin is great, but the recycling process produces waste, so we recycle our glass jars by using them as airtight containers for baking goods, beans, or send ’em down to the workbench. As for laundry detergent and milk jugs? The tops come off and they make great handled cut-in cups for painting trim or storing rags in an easy pull what you need set up under the sink!
Royle says
GREEN ME! We love feeding all of the wild birds outside, so we take stale bread and stick it on tree branches outside our dining room window. That way we can watch them eating it as well. Very entertaining.

GREEN ME!!! We started a worm composting bin underneath our apartment sink not too long ago using buckets we got used and free from our food co-op. And yesterday we just bought our first cloth diaper to try with our baby (due in december)!!

We are going to be cloth diapering (so excited!) and we try to recycle as much as we can… we are slowly getting rid of our chemical cleaners and going the home-made route!
Mary Kathryn Elkins says
Green me please! I am in love with those glasses and the garden in a bag…
We use G-Diapers for our son which are biodegradable. You can compost them, flush them or throw them away and they will be completely broken down in about 50 days. We also use the “Energy Saver Dry” setting on our dishwasher which makes me feel better since we run it so often…

BONUS QUESTION: Winter composting sucks here in Calgary Ab. You either have to run out (in -20 weather) to dump every little thing or deal with having a little composter inside and giving it a good wash every three days. Then I started freezing it, using an old five gallon plastic tub in the freezer. That sucker lasts all month before I need to take the puck of compost out and it just slides out in one giant chunk. A quick rinse later, it’s good to go. No fussing around this winter!

GREEN ME!
We recycle everything we can, have reusable shopping bags, and refillable water/coffee containers. Then again, I grew up with parents who had their own garden and composted, sewed our clothing, and shopped at thrift stores… so I’m accustomed to a green lifestyle and lived it long before it was cool :)

Kim says

Well it seems the majority of commenters use reusable bags (as do I) so I’m trying to think of something unique. We try to recycle just about everything. If we’re not clear on if something is recyclable, we always look up the proper way to dispose of something. (and we’ve unfortunately learned that Baltimore isn’t very condusive to extreme recycling!).

We never buy paper or platic products for entertaining. I use cloth napkins and use our everyday dishes. Saves money on entertaining, is far more charming, and helps the environment to boot. Love it!

GREEN ME! Our family has moved six different times, and my house-finding criteria always involves being a few blocks from a grocery store. It’s both an environmentally friendly way to gather ingredients, and it improves our quality of life!
