This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We have switched out all our bulbs in our house to the energy efficient ones!

Love this giveaway! I just saw an infomercial for a water purifier that is also a docking system for four reusable bottles; the purifier apportions the water into the four bottles, which then snap in and out to take on the go. Perfect for anyone who complains about water purifiers not being convenient enough, and perfect excuse to stop buying bottled water!

I’ve started washing out all my glass cans with lids (like spaghetti sauce jars and others) and using them like Tupperware. I put homemade salsa, hummus, and homemade sauces in soups inside to store them in the fridge. It’s reusing something I would have just used once then recycled.
Thanks,
Katie

We switched to all green cleaning products, and recycle like it’s goin’ out of style!

As well as the obvious ways (recycling, reusable bag/bottles), I also started using organic brown sugar mixed with organic lemon juice on a cotton ball as my daily scrub – better results than any similar product I’ve ever bought!

Started this year with four rolls of paper towels and a commitment not to buy any at all this year. Have two-and-a-half rolls left. I’m using old cloth wipes from my cloth diapering days and the kids old burp cloths and kiddie washcloths and towels for clean ups.

The “green” things I do most often is filter water into reusable bottles and take full advantage of curbside recycling.
Amanda says
GREEN ME!! I live in a house with a 400 gallon water holding tank, that’ll sure limit your water use! Especially when you don’t want to haul water at 40 below during an Alaskan winter.

We are working toward becoming more green, but it’s definitely not the easiest process.
I think my next big task will be trying to rid our house of paper towels/napkins/plates, etc.

I’ve been doing all sorts of things lately, like using baking soda and vinegar for all my household cleaning needs (despite the skepticism expressed by my bf) – to searching out and buying fair-trade sneakers (from Simple Shoes) which are made of eco-happy materials, including recycled car tires for the soles!

Working in an office where I easily used to print a ream of paper a day – we have worked very hard to go paperless this year! I work in a medical school admission office. We’re not there quite yet, but we have come a LONG way!

We just replaced our washer & dryer with super energy & water efficient front loading washer & matching energy star dryer after the timer on our old washer died on us. Instead of having the old pair hauled away (included with installation), we sent them to a happy new home where the timer on the washer was going to be repaired instead of pair ending up in a landfill. Thanks to Craigslist we were able to get them out of our house (and out of the dump) within 15 minutes of posting the ad!

I have started collecting rain water and using that to water my flowers, instead of extra water from the faucet. Love it!

“GREEN ME” Faucet aerators and restrictors are a quick and inexpensive solution to reducing water consumption (saving water AND your pretty pennies!).

GREEN ME! The greenest thing I do? I have an eco-friendly diet – I’m vegetarian.

GREEN ME:) Love your style-incorporating some of it here. We have always recycled and switched to all natural cleaning products as well. Baby steps!

One new thing we’ve started is unplugging “things” when they aren’t in use (like lamps and coffee makers). I know a lot of people already do this, but it’s still new and exciting for us. =)

We’ve been using our reusable grocery bags every week. At our store we get 3 cents off our bill for every bag you use, per trip! Use them enough and they pay for themselves!

My husband and I are constantly trying to find ways to be more green-friendly. We always take reusable bags to the grocery store (and get money back, to boot!) and after buying our house last year, my husband purchased a push reel mower to be a little bit more friendly to the environment. We save money on gas and get quite a workout mowing our yard!

My husband and I raise our own chickens. It’s good for the environment in so many ways but it’s also fun! And we feel better about eating eggs from chickens that we know are happy and healthy. Plus they eat a ton of bugs and most of our veggie scraps. Perfect.

We are trying to go green little by little! We are working at recycling at much as possible and use our reusable grocery bags all the time!

Green ME! What a fantastic giveaway! I hope I win. We have been doing all the usual (recycling, green cleaning products) for a few years now. We just stopped eating Beef completely about 3 weeks ago due to the environmental impact and health reasons. we feel great too.

I’m all about reusable stainless steel water bottles and bringing my own bags to the grocery store. Not only are they eco-friendly but they’re a great way to add cute patterns and colors to an otherwise dull activity!
Shayli Brems says
GREEN ME! I am new to going green. I have always felt that it took too much time to reuse and recycle. However lately I have been inspired to create decorations from things around the house that i would ordinarily just throw away!

I think merely changing jobs made me a lot greener – my new office recycles everything, uses a water bubbler (versus bottles), has motion-detecting lights and I take the bus here instead of driving. I’m going to take credit for the office’s efforts.

The caterer for our wedding partners with a local recycling company to have all of the glass bottles consumed at their events turned into recycled glass countertops, bistro tables, etc that are placed in their restaurant or sold. We thought it was pretty thrifty and ecofriendly!

Getting geared up to buy cloth diapers for my third child (born a little over 2 weeks ago). . . as soon as he is big enough to fit in the All In Ones. Didn’t do cloth with my first 2 so this is a big step. We already love to recycle and use Dr. Bronner’s soap all over our house. My daughter wants to recycle everything. . . unfortunately they won’t take glass.

Hmmm, let’s see:
Corn-based cat litter and biodegradable litter bags
Vingar and baking soda = amazing household cleaner (even drains!)
Line-dry clothing
Only use lights after sundown
Stainless steel water bottles and travel mugs
Next on agenda: rain barrels, compost and vermiculture bins!

I have started making all of my household cleaners and detergents. Better for my family and the environment! They make great gifts too!

Absolutely no plastic bags from any store. I bring my cloth bags into stores like TJ Maxx and Homegoods.

We are big believers in recycling. We have 8 children and consistently put out one garbage can per week (if it’s not Christmas!) because we re-use and recycle everything else. Our neighbors with far smaller households generate more curbside trash than we do. I don’t say this to be smug or self-righteous, just that it’s an easy, painless change to make.
Jane @ The Borrowed Abode says
PS: I forgot my latest and greatest eco-friendly solution! I got creative (I think) and I’ve been making my own decorative storage bins out of my trash, because I don’t want to buy some that were made in a probably-eco-un-friendly factory overseas!

My husband and I figured our best way to be green was to teach our 2.5 year old how to be green. She helps us clean with Mrs. Meyers cleaners and her very own rag, she helps put cans, milk jugs, etc. in the recycle bin. Best of all she ALWAYS turns off the water while brushing her teeth. We hope we are encouraging a more eco-friendly lifestyle for our daughter.
Meg says
Green me!! I stocked up on cute reusable bags and finally stopped using plastic shopping bags.

I’ve taken a lot of tips from your blog on how to be green in my new apartment! I just recently moved in and bought all natural “green” cleaning products, I’ve bought natural paper towels and toilet paper, cut back on using paper towels (use cheap dish towels instead) as well as timing my showers and installing a shower head that uses less water! At the grocery store, I’ve started carrying my own bags and I’ve even started recycling!!
It seems like a lot but I have learned a lot from your blog and I want to decrease my “carbon footprint!”

I am spending three months on an home energy diet, seeing how low can you go? for a 2500 sq/ft colonial in upstate NY, I was down to $60 last month for gas & electric. It is getting colder so I don’t know if I can beat that this month.

This year I started composting (and converted my boyfriend over as well– success!). Also, my aversion for plastic bags grew to the point where I keep 5 or so reusable shopping bags in my car at all times, ready to be used. (Yes, I realize that there is some All-American hypocrisy in storing the reusable bags in my gas guzzler, but that’s the world we live in right now.)

We love our Soda Stream! We used to buy bottles upon bottles of seltzer water, ginger ale, etc. and now we use their refillable bottles to make our own at home. (Plus we never have to worry about flat soda water :))

We participate in the city recycling and have switched to all natural cleaners. We’re planning on starting compost soon (and I’m weirdly looking forward to that!).

We’ve quit with the paper towels, paper plates, plastic cups and just suck it up and do the extra dishes. Though were using a little more water in the process, I get to leave behind that icky feeling everytime we threw wads of paper towels we find from the kids.
Ana says
GREEN ME! We recycle whatever we can, use reusable bags everywhere, reusable water & coffee mugs, reusable containers for our lunch items, and have started making our own cleaners (mostly vinegar & baking soda-based). We also try to water our (small) garden with leftover water we collect throughout the day.

GREEN ME!!!
We exclusively use cloth dipes, but I have recently-ish discovered how much I love using cloth for the rest of the house (minus “family cloth”– I’m not THAT green! :) ) We bought a few packs of cheapo Target washclothes, and keep them in a drawer in the kitchen. Instead of paper towels, we use them to wipe down tables, clean sticky faces, etc. We also keep a stash of cloth wipes to use for runny noses.
