Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:="nofollow">

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    TOUCH ME! What an awesome giveaway! I don’t have an iPhone, but I’ve played around with some friends’ phones. I think one of the coolest apps I’ve seen is the one where you can blow into the speaker of the phone and it plays music notes. I have no idea what it was called though.

    I don’t have any sort of ipod so I’m not sure what app’s already exist. I just love that you can use it as a gsp. I get lost everywhere i go!

    Touch Me – my daughter’s favorite app is Shazam. It listens to a source of recorded music (like the radio) for 10 seconds. Then it compares 10 second clip to its data base and if there is a match, tells you the name of the song, artist, album and provides a link to the i-Tunes store if you wish to purchase the song.

    TOUCH ME! I wish there was an app that would put a hologram of me at my desk at work to appear I was there while I’m really at home snug as bug and asleep in bed!! Don’t we all wish that such a technology existed?!?!

    This is a popular freebie! I don’t have an iPod touch but would love one. I’d like an app that searches online for great recipes for a particular item on sale in the grocery – plug in the ingredient and lots of recipes to choose from right in the store. Maybe there already is an app for that?

    I don’t have an iPhone, but my far-fetched, unrealistic app would mop the floor for me. Oh, how I hate to do it. Plus with a toddler it needs to be done, um, often! Ha.

    Touch me! I’d LOVE this little device. My favorite app is Feather = fashion + weather. It’s both an angel and a devil in your pocket (angel for outfit ideas and devil for introductions to out-of-your-budget purchases).

    Touch me! Don’t have an iPod Touch yet but if I did I think a Fine Art app would be fantastic. You take a photo of a famous piece of artwork and it tells you what it is!

    I would love an app where you could take a picture of what’s inside your pantry and fridge and it comes up with meal suggestions. I don’t know how many times I get to 5 o’clock and think, “what’s for dinner?”

    If I had one of these I-touch bad boys, I’d definitely get the BM color capture and the Swede Shop app. I’m always going places and thinking how much I like a certain color and I’m ALWAYS going over budget at IKEA, sigh.

    TOUCH ME!!

    if i had an ipod touch i would totally download the i heart radio app. mostly because its the one i hear the most about, and also so i could listen to my favorite radio station in the mornings in my office where radio reception is bad and we arent allowed to stream on our work computers.

    or i would go for an app that acts as a pedometer so that when i go walking/running, not only do i have my tunes with me but i can track my progress!

    TOUCH ME (please)… I wish the iphone/ipod touch would get something similar (in quality) to the android for barcode scanning and online price comparisons. The apps for iphone that do this are lacking compared to the android. Also.. is “Tubin'” game out for iPhone yet? :)

    Touch me! I don’t have an iPhone, so I’ll have to make up an app. I want something that I could download recipes I want to try + make one shopping list of what you’d need to make the recipies. Then I could easily upload my list of staples I’d need to get as well, and jaunt off to the store! :)
