Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:="nofollow">

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    I am a Blackberry girl, so I don’t have a favorite iPhone app, but I think there should be a YHL app!!! Love your site, keep up the good work.

    I am a nerd. I love the dictionary map. Words and definitions at your finger tips. NOT free, but worth the cost of a dictionary.

    I have two favorite iPhone apps, and both have to do with Scrabble. One is called Words with Friends, and it’s basically just a scrabble game (although NOT scrabble, since scrabble went after them back when it was called Scrabulous on Facebook–sound like a familiar story)?

    The second app is called CheckWord and it was created by my very own genius husband, Mick West. It checks words to see if they’re “good” or “bad” using various scrabble approved word lists. All the cool kids have this app, so download it toot sweet!

    Touch me! I’d love an app that could scan all my receipts in and categorize them automatically so I could keep a current tally of my spending up to date without too much manual data entry.

    I think a magic iPhone app would have to make doctor and dentist appointments for me. For some reason I have no problem going once they’re scheduled, but I HATE picking up the phone to actually make them. Oh, and the song is totally stuck in my head now…thanks, guys.

    My favorite app (or at least I assume it would be one of my favorites if I had an iPod/iPhone), is Seafood Watch. The original design was a little fold-out card created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium to help you make environmentally-smart choices when choosing seafood. I’ve given one to everyone I know, but how great to have it always handy on your phone!

    TOUCH ME!!! I do not have an iPhone but my husband does and I love Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner app. It’s free and it has helped us sooo many times when we are at the grocery store and don’t know what to make for dinner.

    Don’t have an Ipod but the rigt app for me will slowly wake me up every morning to start the day on time and happy! I struggle getting out of bed every day. If an Ipod could somehow sink with my coffee machine to have a fresh brew of coffee every day it will be as good as my husband!

    I don’t know any apps for the iPhone or iPod Touch because I don’t have one…but the idea of a checkbook balancer would rock my world.

    Or, a thrift-store scanner that could let me know when there was good stuff at local thrift stores :)

    Touch Me! I’m going to have that song stuck in my head all day. :) I don’t have an iphone, but I think an app that would put together meal plans and grocery lists would be really useful. Maybe one that tracks sales at the store too!

    TOUCH ME!!! I love the animal sounds app… IDK what it’s called but my brother has it on his iTouch and it cracks me up. Also, an app to make my roommates do their dishes would be great too!

    i don’t have an iphone or itouch, but i think an awesome app would be where you could stand in a room and it would laser-measure the length of the walls and space things out evenly and all that annoying measuring tape/math stuff!

    I don’t have anything Apple but my husband is a huge Apple freak with EVERYTHING Apple. That being said, I’d love to have an app that reminds him of things he needs to do, like take out the trash and mow the lawn, so it’d be something like the wife nagging app ;).

    I dont know what it is called, but there is an electronic leveler that is pretty useful in hanging shelves and such. We just moved and we use it a lot! (My husband has his own iPod Touch and I totally covet it!- so it would be great to have my own!)

    I’m stuck a few years back with an old school ipod and don’t have an iphone either so I don’t know much about apps. Seems like there are apps for everything though so something with budgeting would be helpful.
