Random.org has selected the two random folks who are about to get $100 to IKEA. And they are… Jennifer (who improves lives by teaching and will also be adopting a child from Ethiopia) and Ashley (who says needs some improvement for herself). Congrats!
If you take one thing away from this post, it should be this: two people are winning $100 gift cards to IKEA this week. Woot! But if you have room for a second thing, know that it’s because Ikea is hosting their second annual Life Improvement Project that, among other things (like hilariously helpful “instructions” for living a better life) includes another $100,000 Life Improvement Sabbatical Contest. So if you’ve got a great idea about how to help others, IKEA will give you one year and one hundred grand to make it happen. Last year’s winner (whose video can be seen here) was actually from right here in Virginia. Double woot!
- PRIZE: An $100 gift card to IKEA, courtesy of the IKEA Life Improvement Project
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IMPROVE ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: …how you’d like to improve the lives of others. Do you have a special skill or talent that you could leverage? Or is there a specific cause or area of need that you’d like to dedicate yourself too?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 12 at 8pm EST (or at 10,000 entries)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The continental 48 United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perked for hosting this giveaway, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of IKEA Life Improvement Project

The cause I’ve been involved in lately is building(ish)! I went on a relief trip to Alabama after tornadoes devastated some of the poorest neighborhoods. You’ll never know how much “home” matters until you lose one, or meet those who’ve lost them. The folks in AL are AMAZING, and inspired me a few weeks later to work on a Habitat for Humanity project. Most recently, I helped paint four apartments at a women’s shelter. It’s easier to walk out into the world with a positive outlook when you wake up in positive surroundings.

I was recently diagnosed with an auto-immune disease called ITP, where my bone marrow basically makes antibodies that destroy the platelets in my blood–which means my blood doesn’t clot very well. Having dealt with this for the past two months and potentially for the rest of my life, I’d love to create some sort of support group–probably online due to the greater chance of allowing people with ITP to connect with one another–to share information, strategies, and an ear with things get frustrating (which is a lot of the time).

I’d like to teach lower income people how to manage their money. Or just be there to listen/hug when needed. :)
Dana says
IMPROVE ME! I’m doing my part to help those who can’t afford cloth diapers, use them by volunteering for a local cloth diaper kit organization. Cloth diapers aren’t what they used to be, and they are a huge money saver in our family and I like to bless others with them.

IMPROVE ME! I would love to help out with the anti-bullying movement by creating support groups and help hotlines for kids in schools who are victims of bullying. There are too many kids out there that feel alone and scared. Not only would it help out their self esteem and confidence, but it would also improve their educations. A safe environment makes for better learning!

IMPROVE ME! I’d like to improve people’s lives by keeping libraries around. They’re getting their budgets slashed right and left, and some counties have shuttered their libraries entirely. I grew up going to the library at least weekly, and way more in the summer. I want to save that for my own kiddos!

I’d like to help homeless animals… I once had a dream where I took in all the local stray cats and built them little homes all stacked together (called “catdominiums”)… I just hate seeing the poor little guys alone, beaten up, sick, hungry and unloved : (
Stephanie says
Improve me! I volunteer for a local animal rescue group and process adoption applications for our resuce dogs. They bring so much joy to the lives of the adopters, just like our rescue dog had brought to ours.

BONUS QUESTION: I would like to help moms feel more confident in their own abilities. Too many of them feel like they are constantly failing at one thing or another when the simple act of just keeping another human being alive should be celebrated.

I’ve always felt compelled to volunteer at food pantries and/or soup kitchens. I haven’t done so in ages, but I hope to make time before long. Making sure people are fed, especially since it feels harder and harder to do these days even with a stable income, is just a basic need I like to make sure is met.
