Random.org has selected the two random folks who are about to get $100 to IKEA. And they are… Jennifer (who improves lives by teaching and will also be adopting a child from Ethiopia) and Ashley (who says needs some improvement for herself). Congrats!
If you take one thing away from this post, it should be this: two people are winning $100 gift cards to IKEA this week. Woot! But if you have room for a second thing, know that it’s because Ikea is hosting their second annual Life Improvement Project that, among other things (like hilariously helpful “instructions” for living a better life) includes another $100,000 Life Improvement Sabbatical Contest. So if you’ve got a great idea about how to help others, IKEA will give you one year and one hundred grand to make it happen. Last year’s winner (whose video can be seen here) was actually from right here in Virginia. Double woot!
- PRIZE: An $100 gift card to IKEA, courtesy of the IKEA Life Improvement Project
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IMPROVE ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: …how you’d like to improve the lives of others. Do you have a special skill or talent that you could leverage? Or is there a specific cause or area of need that you’d like to dedicate yourself too?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 12 at 8pm EST (or at 10,000 entries)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The continental 48 United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perked for hosting this giveaway, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of IKEA Life Improvement Project

Wouldn’t it be awesome to be one of those Red Cross volunteers who help people in crisis situations? (floods, fires, etc.) That’s what I was thinking as I drove home from my 9-5 job tonight.

IMPROVE ME! I’ve truly considered giving away my possessions to others & starting fresh from scratch without all the “stuff” that takes up space & clutters the mind. “Stuff” requires a ton of mental energy & expense. I’d love to make good on this thought. Sort of “What Would Jesus Do?” I actually think it would be so freeing! On a more immediate timetable, I need to perform more random acts of kindness on a daily basis (free as well as financial actions). I’m always amazed at how a simple smile/sweet compliment/thoughtful response from others can positively affect my entire day more than anything else. No cost, but huge impact that lingers.

It’s amazing what stuff can do! We’ve donated so much of ours the last two years…so much less dusting and upkeep! And you’re right; even if it’s small it takes up room in the mind.

I love to mentor women in broken situations, and I like to make people feel loved through cooking for them, sharing stories and crafting beautiful things to look at and enjoy. Oh, and I love to share my love of animals and gardening with children, too.

I’m a high school counselor and I’d really love a year where all of my seniors graduate! I know it doesn’t seem like a big life changer, but it really is. I think that if students can realize that they can make it through high school no matter what their circumstances then they can get through other challenges as they come.

We regularly go camping out on the Olympic Pennisula with friends & family on some ‘rustic’ property we own. We have a special needs child who loves the camping experience–if we ever could afford to build a proper cabin out there, we’d love to provide a ‘camping experience’ and respite for other families with special needs kids.

I would like to help spread what I am most passionate about, animal rights and welfare. From which the below inspires me.
“As for why our bond with them [dogs] matters, there are reasons for that, too. If you hang around animal activists for a while, you’ll inevitably hear repeated a famous Ghandi quote: ‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.’ The idea being that in order to life the whole of society, you must first prop up the lowest among its many parts. If you show goodwill and kindness toward those who cannot stand up for themselves, you set a tone of compassion and goodwill that permeates all.”

I’d like to organize more blood drives. I don’t think people realize how easy it is and how little time it takes to donate. One blood donation takes just about an hour (or less!) and can save up to three lives! I’d love to get more people involved in donating blood. People frequently don’t go to their local Red Cross, but are more likely to get involved in the donation process if there is a central, big point to donate.
