Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.
And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.
But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:
- PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

I have worked in non-profit for the last 6 years. I would spend a year grant writing and planning for my dream of Camp Moondance in the Texas hill country. It’s a free artistic camp for children who cannot affort to go to camp or be involved in activities (such as art, music, drama, etc). Our camp would provide that for them. Our kids would have to apply to be admitted to camp and must have all B’s or higher in school. One can dream, right??

I would use my sewing ability to make large-sized dresses for The Glass Slipper Project (http://www.glassslipperproject.org/) and sew more for the military needs. I was laid off from my job in mid-May and have been able to do some of this, but I would love to not have to worry about finding a job and be able to devote full-time to this. I’m currently making 500 eyemasks for a request from a Navy Lt. Commander for a hospital in Kuwait because several of the military that come through her hospital have insomnia issues.

IKEA ME! .. as Pax Sliding Door. Currently, I have to shimmy my body through a small opening to get to the my clothes on the other end of the unreachable closet. The pax doors would extend the usable width of my closet.
If I could spend one year helping other .. I would volunteer at the Goodwill. I would help with marketing of current pieces to show them how to make a current piece of furniture better.. making the shelf time at Goodwill a lot less.
I would help other refinish their furniture, clothing or other items to make the pieces work in their current space and lifestyle. A lot of people are doing this, but they’re not sharing their thriftness style with people who need it the most.
In addition, I would love to help work with families to refinish their furniture and space. I would incorporate Ikea furniture with pieces mixed in from 2nd hand shops.

I would spend the year teaching kids and their parents how to grow and cook nutritious food for themselves. Growing food in their yards would help save money, often gets kids more interested in what they’re eating, and provides healthy alternatives to junk food. Cooking together helps the family grow together, teaches the kids valuable lessons (reading recipes, adding fractions, etc), and again increases interest in foods like leafy greens, fruits and other vegetables.
