And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). IKEA ME!
The hardest area that I’ve dealt with so far is in volunteering with the elderly. A group of people largely overlooked, and many treated as a throw-away segment of society. Those that don’t have loved ones around are often in vulnerable position. I would give another year to work that helps advocate for, protect, and promote their dignity as individuals.
Rebecca says
IKEA ME! If I had a whole year, I would either do more volunteer work helping out the homeless in my city or volunteer with sustainable, organic farms to help out our local food producers.
Eileen says

IKEA Me is right!
If I could spend a year helping others, I would work with battered women and children’s shelters. It takes such courage and strength for a woman to get out of an abusive situation, and for them to have a safe, clean and supportive place to take their family means one less obstacle to overcome. It would be incredibly rewarding to help design spaces that would help to make their temporary homes feel more like a launching pad for their future than just a room and a bed.

It’s harder than I thought to decide what philanthropic thing I would do… but it comes down to raising money and awareness for Type 1 Diabetes (which affects my and several other people in my family) and working with horses, either as a rescue or using horses as a method of rehabilitation for children with mental or physical handicaps.
