Sherry and I can’t stop talking about how good the toasts were at my cousin Casey’s wedding in Dallas (Wedding Crashing pics to come…). There were five in total (two groomsmen, two bridesmaids and my other cousin, the bride’s teenage brother) and each was remarkably funny, articulate and touching. Most weddings are lucky enough to have one of those, let alone a handful. So in that spirit, we think this week’s prize from Mikasa Crystal & Dinnerware is quite fitting.
Mikasa’s been dishing out classic and stylish servingware for over 60 years (perhaps they were even on your wedding registry?) so we were stoked when they contacted us to offer up some free goodies for you our lovey readers. This week we’re serving up prizes to three lucky winners from Mikasa’s new Cheers Too line of glassware. Each set of four crystal drinking glasses features simple, modern designs that just make you wanna throw a dinner party. With lots of “beverages” on hand, of course.
- PRIZE: Your choice of the Cheers Too White Wine, Double Old Fashioned, or Highball Set of Four by Mikasa
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “I’ll DRINK TO THAT” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: Tell us about a memorable toast you’ve heard (or given!) and what made it great. We could all use a few good toastmaster tips, right?
- CONTEST CLOSES: Wednesday, August 26th at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Three
- PRIZE SHIPS: United States only this time.
- THE USUAL: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Most of my family doesn’t drink, so when my father-in-law was asked to give the toast at my brother-in-law’s wedding (where at least half of the guests were already drunk), he used water. Even though it’s traditionally “bad luck” to toast with water, he pulled it off in amazing fashion. He gave three reasons for toasting with water (that had to do with marriage and love and stuff). I don’t remember all the details (does that make it not memorable?), but it was very well-executed.

I’ll DRINK TO THAT – my husband’s best man was his uncle who gave a speech with tons of funny stories from when he was little.

My good friend was maid of honor at another good friend’s wedding, and she really doesn’t like to speak in public. She manages projects for a production company, so she used her organizational and multimedia skills to put together an awesome slideshow of pictures from their long friendship, and gave everyone in the wedding party a professionally produced copy of the slide show on CD. It was lovely!

The best toast I heard was my maid of honor. She wasn’t nervous or shaking at all like most I see. It was real and heartfelt and the fact that she seemed at ease made it really good!

I can never remember a good toast after hearing it. Like good jokes. I have had the same experience as other commenters where the toaster revealed things that weren’t supposed to be known…awkward! And of course, I always loved the toast in the movie “Four Weddings and Funeral” although right now I couldn’t quote it for you.

I had the best toasts at my wedding… although I couldn’t tell you what they said now! That day is unfortunatly a blur at times and it was only a year ago!

The sweetest toast I ever heard was from a dad that had just found out he had cancer, he told how special his daughter was and just how he expected the new SIL to take care of her. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

I was at a wedding once where the best man gave a eulogy for the groom. Talking in the past tense about the groom the whole time, saying such nice things about him and sharing memories of them. It was hilarious!

I’ve never given a toast, and I haven’t been to very many weddings. My favorite toasts are always the ones that are a little bit funny–but mostly heartfelt. I love when you can see the love a sibling or close friend has for someone on one of the most important days of their lives.
I especially love when the in-laws welcome the new spouse to the family. So beautiful.

In October I gave a toast at my childhood best friend’s wedding. I was so incredibly happy for her and we have been through so much together. My toast was short, sweet, and tearful..and received a lot of compliments!

I’LL DRINK TO THAT! White Wine, please!
I gave the MOH speech at my sister’s wedding and really struggled with thinking of what to say, since she and I aren’t super close and I didn’t know her new husband all that well yet (we live on opposite sides of the country). Thankfully, I got last-minute inspiration and talked about our late father and the things I remembered him saying about who my sister dated and what kind of husband he thought she might have. It ended up being sentimental, a bit teary, funny, and perfectly relevant. Don’t think I’ll ever top that speech!

The only toast I’ve ever given was at my wedding – I stood up to thank my parents, my husband’s parents, and my new husband – but at the crucial part, I said, “Let’s raise a glass to my wonderful fiance…” A few people yelled out, “HE’S YOUR HUSBAND NOW!” Oops.

Best toast I’ve ever heard was from my brother at our other brother’s wedding. He started off by saying “I gotta say…when I first learned my dad had set up my brother on a blind date, I was worried…”

I’ve never actually given a toast, but I’ve got my first wedding of a friend coming up, and I’m hoping to find something better to joke about than the world’s smallest handcuff.

My favorite toast story was when I was MOH at my BFF’s wedding this past May. I stood toward the side while the best man gave his speech. A couple friends of the bride who I had just met kept passing me champagne while I stood there, and I kept downing it…you know, to calm my nerves. Well apparently, they didn’t mean to give me 3 glasses to drink, they were trying to give me a glass to toast with. Ooops.

Oh God. I chickened out of my only maid of honor toast and
made one of the bridesmaids give it. I would have passed out from fear if I had done it myself. I once read a passage at another friends wedding and almost collapsed on the way back to my seat. Maybe I should stop accepting these invitations?

Sadly, I have never had the opportunity to hear a toast. Last reception I was at, I was probably 4 years old and the flower girl! I don’t remember a thing! But I do know that Mikasa has been a name I’ve recognized for YEARS and those highball glasses sure would do great on my bar. ;)

The best toast I have heard…my best friend from high school was getting married her sister sang a song… about their childhood and growing up and how they are more than just sisters they are best friends. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room. It was beautiful!

The best I’ve ever heard was my boyfriend’s best man speech for his brother. Obviously, I’m a little biased, but it was a little funny, a little emotional and a lot of loving. A perfect balance! And 5 years later, people are still talking about it.

I already commented so this isn’t another entry, but needed to share another toast story:
Different friends’ wedding, this time I didn’t really know her MOH, but they had grown up together and used to make Top Ten lists about everything when they were kids. So in her toast, the MOH made a Top Ten list of moments in their friendship, and it was very well done – part hilarious, part really sweet.

The best man at my wedding last year had all the tables bent over laughing… basically he just made fun of HIMSELF instead of the groom. It was great and much appreciated, as my husband embarasses quite easily. And the best man definitely had a lot of dirt on him, and me too!

I’LL DRINK TO THAT! I recently gave a toast at my best friend and sorority sister’s wedding – I think one of the key things to remember is keeping it on the shorter side. And to make sure what you’re saying is relevant – not everyone will understand the time she dressed up in a drummer boy costume..

I did a toast for my best friend’s wedding. I was sooooo nervous ALL DAY! But I started composing the toast in my head a couple of months before the wedding, and I think it came out pretty well! I got a lot of compliments on the toast, even from strangers, so that made me feel good!
What I think makes the best toast is just something that is personal – a couple of cute anectodes or stories (that relate somehow to the couple or marriage in general). I think it is hard to fly by the seat of your pants in a toast and do a good job so I think it is good to at least mentally prepare what you want to say ahead of time.

As a bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding last year, I didn’t realize that every other bridesmaid was getting up to give a toast. I’m terrible at improv so I gracefully opted to sit that one out. I was embarrassed, but as the toasts dragged on and on I was glad I wasn’t contributing!

The best line from a toast that I remember was when the best man told the bride and groom “This is the day that you will love each other the least” All of the guests let out a collective Aww!

We’ve been to 9 weddings this year (including ours) and we’ve heard many great toasts. One stand out is when the groom’s childhood best friend reenacted his early years with other groomsmen dressed up as the groom at different ages. One had short shorts and a GI Joe backpack. It was hilarious in person!

Funny toast from best man: he said he couldn’t put into words how much the groom meant to him, so instead… he was going to do an interpretive dance. He proceded to put on an Enya song and dance around like a crazy person.
