Update: We hoped to have a Thursday post for you guys but this week didn’t go as planned. So sorry!
Update #2: We’d love your thoughts on this thread that popped up on this post. What are your opinions about smaller posts when we can’t write something juicy? Skip them and just own that we can’t post that day with a little update like this one, or would you rather see something small instead of nothing (like a quick organizing update, a Reader Redesign, a dilemma we’re debating, etc)? Thanks for the feedback!
Curtains can make the room. And pillows, well, you can never have too many (at least according to my pillow obsessed wife). This week someone’s going to win $500 to spend at Martha & Ash, a family business that’s focused on fabric goods with quality and craftsmanship. You can splurge on pillows, dog beds, or score yourself some custom drapes, like a striped or two toned option in your choice of over 25+ colors.
Please use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter (it might take a second to load, but it should eventually pop up below this paragraph). This giveaway is available anywhere in the world!

I’m glad you asked for our opinions, because I’ve been debating sharing mine for weeks now. First off, love you guys and your family and your site. I love the technical stuff because it’s not only inspirational, but great to re-visit when you are doing said projects. (Such as re-grouting the tub, which I did this weekend and totally looked up your post from the yucky master bathroom job.)
Personally, I felt that you guys cut back a little too much. Right now, you post 4 times a week and 1 of those is a giveaway. Giveaways are a nice treat and I’m convinced that one day I might actually win, but basically they are advertisement. Which is what has always made your blog different from everyone else’s. I remember when you used to accept blogger goodies for reviews and how much respect I had when you stopped doing that. I know high-traffic blogs are not cheap to maintain, but I think you guys did have the best balance between “this is advertiser stuff over here and this is real life over here.” Now I feel like 25% of your weekly content is an advertisement.
I totally understand and love the ebb-and-flow aspect of your blog. You guys built an entirely new room in your house – of course that is what we’re going to be reading about! I would like to see more smaller posts. I would love to see the site return to 6 posts a week – 1 per day + a giveaway. Even if half of those are just pictures of Clara and Teddy or other snippets for your lives.
mary says
I scowl at the giveaways. Not because they’re not fun but a 1 in 20,000 chance at a freebie vs. 10 mins of a break from work reading YHL… no contest. I’d rather more content.
I skim over the drywall/door/carpentry type stuff but I don’t want tablescapes, either. I don’t know! Can’t you hire a staff like Emily Henderson? ; )
mary says
Oh and I’d definitely prefer you ditch the heavy comment interaction in order to have more content but I know you feel that part is important and it’s your business, after all! But I personally wouldn’t mind less of it.
Jennifer says
I second Mary on the comment interaction. I would rather have good content than have every single comment replied to all the time.
ShellyP says
I agree with Mary’s comments re the giveaways. i know that they have been a weekly tradition but now the numbers are so high that I don’t bother reading them anymore e.g, 1 in 20,000 chance at a freebie.
Sounds like lots of folks visit YHL while taking a respite at work and value reading something new and fresh. I am in that camp, too.
N Shirley says
I am just going to assume you ran out of socks and now that the laundry room is done you are catching up with a ton of laundry. Seriously I hope all is well.
Vikki says
Hey guys, I have been reading your blog for about five years now, and I have to say I agree with the others. I personally love all the “little” crafty/design posts, as well as the longer DIY ones which I always know I can come back to as a reference should I be doing something similar in the future. I admire your ability to manage all of this, as well as two kids, so understand that you can’t post every day, and will continue to read YHL regularly. Smaller posts like Reader Redesigns would be greatly appreciated. With much love from New Zealand xx
Jess says
Hi Petersiks! I will echo many of my fellow readers and say that I would love to see smaller, less technical posts if it means you could post with a little more frequency. I loved the little crafty posts you used to have, with the focus on smaller projects like you feature in the book. I think you know your business and your life better than any of us, even though we all feel like we know you (in a non-creepy, DIY lovin’ way), so ultimately you should do what’s best for your actual life, and yes, I’ll say it, your brand. That being said, if I’m being completely honest, I do feel like the blog has lost a little of its spark and a lot of its color during these last few months. But I will never quit you, YHL! I read a lot of other DIY/design blogs, and I truly think that you are among the very best at what you do, I’m just hoping that you’re not getting tired of it. For what it’s worth, many of the other blogs that I’ve read and loved over the years are now completely dominated by sponsored posts these days, and I’m so grateful that you don’t do that :-)
Amy says
Ya’ll I adore you both, and as the Mom of 3 kids 7 and under, (all boys), I feel like you have to do whats best for you.
That said, I’d take any scrap of a post, Kiddo update, anything over nothing IF it’s possible. I love the DIY’s and often tell the hubby, “look we can do (insert cool DIY YHL project) because Sherry and John gave us the play by play on how to.
Finally, I was a serial red and black and bland color gal. Your site introduced me to colors I didn’t think would be in my home ever. THANK YOU!! I appreciate you both and this blog.
Do what is best for your family.

I Enjoy All Of Your Posts, But I Feel Like You’ve Gone Away From Inexpensive Ways To Diy Things That Look High End To Just Buying Or Building The High End. I Love The Laundry Room Posts, and Like The Variety Of technical And Art/Paint/Etc Posts.
(Sorry About The Weird Caps-Commenting From My Phone Comes Out Awkward).
Marci says
:) So funny your phone does that. I thought you were writing the title of their next book or something!
Suzy says
I personally really love the technical/renovation updates as I used to be a carpenter and my husband and I have been fully renovating our home from top to bottom. I enjoy seeing the problem solving that you two go through and sometimes I am genuinely interested in seeing how to do something I’ve never done before like putting up a backsplash. The decorating is always fun of course but I for one fully appreciate all of the work that goes in behind the scenes. Keep up the excellent work!
Christy says
Since you ask, I have been missing the fun, mixed-bag of posts from previous years. You guys have such done such a good job, and I know you are in a busy phase right now with your house, your book, and your sweet children.
Alice says
I’ve followed your blog for a long time. Even though I miss daily posts, I think it’s great that you scaled back to focus on family which is the most important thing after all. I think it’s fine if you have to skip occasional posts or just add a short update if your schedule is tight.
Since you seem to have different audiences, some who want intense DIY others who like lighter items, and some like me who like both, you’ll have a hard time pleasing all of the people all of the time as they saying goes.
I like big detailed posts, little updates, family related posts, or even an occasional burger video. I got very excited to see the washer & dryer back in place and immediately thought ‘It’s weird to get so excited over someone else’s laundry room.” I scanned the door post because I wouldn’t tackle a job like that myself but it was still cool to see and gave me a new appreciation for doors.
I’ve always been willing to troubleshoot little household repairs or paint a room, but I never thought I’d consider doing bigger jobs. Your blog has made me rethink that and it has given me many decor and functional update ideas for my home.
Most importantly, your positive attitude and approach is what keeps me coming back for more. I look forward to seeing how your blog continues to evolve. Thanks for all that you do!
Crystal says
I personally love all of the more detailed posts. I too want to learn how to install a door jamb, even if Luke doesn’t. I enter in the giveaways, and I like the smaller posts too. I look forward to seeing how your laundry room is coming along, all the bumps in the road and the smooth sailing. I love it all. As long as you keep posting, I’m totally down with whatever you choose!
Callie says
I love reading your blog and I am excited that you are taking time for your family. You can always post more later but Teddy and Clara will only be this age once. I say soak up all the baby cuddles and kid fun you can. I will check you blog daily anyway. I am always amazed with how much you guys do with a new baby. I look forward to checking your blog. I starting reading it when I had a little one and I love reading it as she nurses or naps. Thank you for all of your wonderful posts.
AY says
DEFINITELY prefer small posts on days you don’t have something “juicy” as you call it! I don’t need something long and involved every day, I like when it’s broken up into different lengths and complexities. The ideas you suggested like an organization update or dilemma etc sound awesome!
Kristin says
Hi! You two are so talented. Your “smaller” post are always creative and inspiring. You two have wonderful ideas. They might seem small to you but I can assure you those ideas spark creativity and joy for your readers.
I’ve wondered about the reader redesigns, those are great.
Above all else, take care of each other.
Cheers!
Chris says
I agree with Shauna. I love your blog and have used many ideas I’ve seen here (grout refresh last weekend -amazing change to our tiled areas!) But ultimately this blog is about your life and it also your job. Lives and jobs evolve. I have stopped reading some blogs that seem like they do things just so they can blog about it and it seems so forced and insincere – yes- totally fake, or just reposted from Pinterest. I think what keeps people (ok-me) following you is that it is fresh, original and genuine. Your lives, and therefore your blog will keep evolving. I’d rather see one genuine, quality post a month and know you are growing, happy and moving forward than to see a lot of filler just so you can get a certain number of posts out per week or month. Ultimately, though it has to be what is right for you. xoxo
megan says
ok my husband and i were just talking about this aspect of your blog the other day!!! I used to come to you every morning with my coffee sooo excited for what you had to say, but lately it’s all been unattainable to us. We don’t know how to ( or need to ) move walls and make walls. and we can’t afford expensive art or fabric and we used to love that your blog was totally something we could attain. but now it feels like if we are not expert builders or have a lot of $ we kinda don’t fit in here anymore :((( we LOVE you soooo much, we just feel like you’ve moved on from us!!!
Pamela says
My advice…listen to your heart regarding the content of your blog. I admire your drive and recognition of balance and priorities. Sometimes life gets in the way. If people are “bored” with content perhaps they need to move on. I, for one, enjoy reading any post you publish. It’s refreshing to see a young family have an understanding of making choices for the betterment of the family unit. Kudos to you!
Kristi says
This blog is 2 peoples FULL TIME job!!! Why does having a baby mean that you get a ‘year long hall pass?’ Most parents still work after having kids. If you want to continue making money from the blog then treat it like a full time job and if you don’t need the money, then don’t.
Jen says
Another vote for smaller posts with less content if it means more frequency. Love reading your blog daily (another long time, 7+ years, reader). Your longer posts are obviously chock full of info and photos and take a ton of time for you to put together. I’d love to see 2-3 heavy/medium content posts/week with 2-3 lighter content posts (total of 5/week) just to be able to see something new every (week)day. I don’t usually bother scrolling thru the giveaway posts but understand why you do them. Whatever you guys can make work will be great, especially now with so much on your plate(s). :-)
Amy says
Long time reader here – I think I’ve been reading for about 6 years or something?! While I believe everybody has the right to live their lives as they see fit, you are asking for opinions :)
I see a few things you can do:
1) I have to applaud you guys for taking on a meaty project, like the laundry room. However, it has been “all DIY — all the time”, and we haven’t really seen any other part of the house for a while. While I am interested in the DIY, there has been little design or decorating involved (the fun stuff!). It might have been more interesting to see new decor in other areas of your home — what about showing us your new office rug and curtains? — in-between laundry posts.
2) I don’t think you guys need to blog in “real time” as much as you might need to plan ahead more to produce consistent content. (In my job I will plan ahead 6 months to a year, and I pad my time to accommodate for the unexpected). So if you knew you were going to be concentrating on the book production late August through September, you might have spent more time knocking out blog projects during the months of July through beginning of August… and saving them to show us now…
3) That being said, why not delegate some of the content? You guys are editors of your blog! Take someone else’s projects and showcase them! For instance – I love the reader redesigns, wondering if you could expand on that by “adopting” a “young” couple who are looking to DIY in your area and guide them through some mini-renovations and decorating projects? It could be a episodic feature that would keep your readers interested over a series of posts, but someone else would be investing their own time, energy, and money. You guys would just be putting your stamp of approval on it. I remember reading an interview with Jonathan Adler where he talked about his business expanding and how it became too much for him to handle alone. And look at his empire now! Once again it’s your life, and you gotta live it the way you want, but just know that some of your long time fans are scratching their heads… you guys have a captive audience, why not provide the content?
I noticed you have scaled back on the posts and photos with the kids. I see a lot of your readers are commenting that they would like to see more kids… Occasionally is fine, but I think there is to be something said for protecting your children’s privacy and I applaud you for it.
Trela says
I didn’t count all of the comments, but yep, I think I agree with the consensus… you’re my favorite blog, too, but it used to feel more like your book (perky quick little projects). Though the incredibly detailed posts on the laundry room are well written, I’m not DOING a laundry room right now, so I’m not getting anything from it, and I definitely skim. I think the only post I’ve fully read recently involved the backsplash since it was more universal. Your long detailed posts of course have always happened, but “light” stuff was in between them. Style a garage sale painting, visit with your mom, take Clara to a park — guessing you still do all of those things but we don’t see them as often. And… maybe consider… John is putting an AWFUL lot of work and writing into some very technical posts. I think most of us are just skimming those. Or looking at pictures… I know the point is that anyone can do the stuff you do, but you’re getting out of the relm of the average DIYer, since most of us CAN’T spend the amount of time on a project that you guys do. If he loves doing it, cool, but otherwise, I’d scale those back immensely. No worries, though. I’ll still read! Or skim the pictures at least! :)
Rebecca says
I definitely miss the Petersik posts so I would prefer more quantity versus the lengthy posts of late! But I love whatever you guys do! Oh yeah, and I miss the Sherry posts as they seem to be more John heavy as of late.
Amanda says
I am what you might call, a half-ass follower. I love your blog, but am a busy working mom so I catch it about 2-3 times/week. It’s funny because it wasn’t until your comment asking for feedback that I realized I’ve been reading your blog less and less. After a bit of analysis (and I’m a psychoanalyst, so this is a little funny) – I realized I’ve been “tuning in” less and less because there seems to be a lack of variety. Part of what makes your blog great is that it’s like the (former) Oprah show. Oprah would have a giveaway one day, a politician the next, a spiritual adviser, and then a makeover show all in the same week! And that format worked. Your blog is like that to me – you never know exactly what the post will be about: DIY projects, decorating, crafty stuff, family, etc. There is such a great variety! And so when there’s a couple similar genres in a row, it may seem a bit less interesting for some followers. Thanks for taking feedback!
Susan Marie says
I really appreciate the long DIY posts and have been enjoying John’s laundry room reno posts lately. It is great homeowner education! The technical posts are excellent references when completing home projects myself.
Stick to the standards in which you believe and don’t compromise just to keep up frequency.
Thank you for the quality posts and for caring about reader feedback. You guys rock!
Heather says
I love your smaller posts. They are inspiration and make me want to go out and try something myself. I love the idea of popping them onto the site when you guys are busy. Family stories are also great. Maybe Clara and Burger can plant some winter bulbs and post about it. :P lol
I also adore the house crashes. More would be totally terrific!
Kimberly says
Love the idea of smaller posts about little things! Love all your posts … every type. But variety is nice and posts that show your personality. Reader Redesigns are awesome, too! Keep doing what you’re doing! I love reading and seeing what you’re loving and creating and planning and transforming.
Hayley says
I savor every post from y’all so smaller posts are great! Whether it is Reader Redesign or a family post, I love it all! Bring it on!
Ashley says
I’ve been reading your blog for about two years now. I totally understand scaling back to 4 posts a week– it makes total sense. Five a week seems like you’re putting out a daily newspaper or something! Stress! Even 4 seems daunting to me. This week was special– hello holiday on a monday– I just finished dishes from that day (who am I to judge you not getting a 1000 word post up?).
With that being said, I admit I still check YHL every Friday, out of habit. When my kiddo is eating lunch, I usually grab my laptop/smart phone and read whatever you’ve got for the day. It’s my me-time. I miss having that everyday.
With that said– styling shelves was always so inspiring– What do your’s look like these days?! Painting an empty trash can, flipping it over, and voila– accent table! ;-) These are some of my favorites! I always pin them and PRAY I remember them when I find something worth fixing up! I love your shorter posts, with a little blurb at the bottom saying, “Back to the BIG project on Monday!” I think the smaller posts are the glue to any major production (liken it to a TV series, where there are MAJOR story arcs in a season, but each episode has a few little things that don’t effect much, but keep you interested).
Building a house right now, I’ve loved watching the laundry room development– I literally clapped my hands for you guys when you decided to take it on yourselves.
At the end of the day, this is your blog. Your call! ;-)
Emily says
Yes! I prefer smaller posts daily rather than nothing at all. I’m all for reader redesigns and little artsy projects. Love them, in fact! I have been reading forever, and am a little bummed as of late, but I totally understand life changes (one happening here in three months!). So, no matter what, I will love the site and hearing about your projects, and I will stick with you no matter what changes. Good luck sorting all of this out :)
Shannon says
Smaller posts sound fun! I’m newer to the blog but have gone through the archives a bit and really liked some of the older posts that were shorter and less serious. Although I want to high five you guys when you do a detailed reno tutorial that I follow for bigger home projects, they feel a bit cumbersome when they’re back to back without some lighter material in between.
Summary: 1 more vote for yes to lighter posts!
Anne says
John and Sherry another long time reader of your blog. As a mother of three I will say all parents are incredibly busy, often both parents work full time and still have to make time to do home repairs, kids activities etc. What I’m trying to say is if this blog is your biggest source of income take it seriously. No offense intended I still enjoy reading but everyone acting like it’s so impossible to manage your family and post daily should realize that other families also have to juggle multiple responsibilities and get them done.
Meg says
I love posts about debating different things (like you did with the kitchen layout of the last house). It is like a season cliff hanger to wait and see what you ended up choosing. Plus then I can shout at my computer which is my pick. I doubt I will shout as loud as I do when I watch Love It or List It though ;)
JM says
I’ll admit that I did not read through the whole feed of comments. I stopped when I was embarrassed by some readers strongly voicing opinions and requesting specific content from you. Um, John and Sherry, I wish for you to post whatever you want to post… it’s your blog. And, dear readers, let us not forget that blogging is voluntary. I realize that readers are ‘suggesting’ what they think you should post in order to save and keep readers. Clearly they feel it is important for you to keep THEM as a reader. But, when you sat down and created this blog, I dare to think that you never imagined to have this many readers to ‘save’. You have a special niche that grew because you were regular people that were dipping their hands into DIY and letting us peek over your shoulder while you did so as a couple, and now as a growing family. You are not required to meet our expectations. Post what you want. Personally I enjoy it all. And FYI… your laundry room looks FAB! (Posts about doors and all!)
Sabrina says
I would love to see a small post rather than no post. I love it when you guys post updates on things in your house or how something is working for you. No matter what, I will still continue to read your blog daily. I even check in every Friday just to see if you post a surprise post. Overall, I think you guys are doing a great job. Your kids will only be young once, it’s your job to be there for them and raise them. You can always blog later.
Sena dees says
Hey! I’m a little late to the posting game. But, I am not as huge of a fan of installing a door/etc posts, but I think a lot of your readers probably get a lot from them, and I totally do too for that one day far away when I own/fix a house ;) But some filler post inbetween sounds super fun. Styling a table/ organizing, and all that other stuff other people wrote. I hope you guys are enjoying a lot of good family time though! Because in the end this is a job and family is real life. :)
Michelle says
I have to be honest my interest level has gone down. I used to come to the site 9:15 every morning and now it’s maybe every couple days.
I beg you to please take this as constructive criticism, because I have nothing but admiration for you. I feel like what set your blog apart from most DIY blogs, and probably made you so successful is that your blog reads like a professional website, like this site was your job and most importantly your passion. You’ve spoiled us all with such diverse daily post and your content contained everything from Large scale remodels to funny thrift shopping videos. However, now with the 3 post a week it’s really starting to feel like all the other “mommy blogs” out there. It just kind of feels like the blog is starting to seem more like a hobby then passion or a full time job. I think maybe adding in some reader redesign or some more quick little updates like art in the bathroom, may add some much needed life back in to the blog.
Wanda says
Hi John and Sherry,
I have been a faithful reader for quite some time. My husband and I copied your work on the bathroom you remodeled in your first house. We had the exact floor plan and were at a loss as to how we should proceed. It turned out great and we will always be appreciative of you for sharing your step by step processes.
Although I am not in your age group I love your design style and always looked forward to your daily posts. Until lately. Not having the renovation needs that I once did, I just skim when I see that there is a major DIY post. I find myself coming back less frequently because there are fewer design related posts to hold my interest. I did enjoy reading about Teddy’s room and the office progress. :) Although I can appreciate the detailed posts on home renovation, the content on the blog is not as diverse as it once was. I would like to see more variety. I doubt “filler” content is something anyone wants to see. I would love short, interesting design focused posts.
You have created what appears to be a very successful brand in Young House Love. You are the authors and designers of your product and you can make it what you want it to be.
Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts. I know it must be difficult to open yourselves up to criticism. All of the posts in response to your question should reassure you that people really do love you guys.
Shana says
Smaller posts are great! I love seeing your progress on things like the laundry room, but I do skip over a lot of the heavy details. However I do make mental notes in case we are ever doing something similar and need to find thorough details… I know you’re my source! So please keep up the long, detailed posts, but also adding light content when you’re in a rush is great.
Rhonda West says
Don’t know if you guys are still reading these.. 400+ comments later! But I figured I’d drop in just in case. I am a 25 year old first time homeowner who started reading your blog about a year ago. I like a mix of short posts about family and quick diy projects and long posts, but not necessarily in higher frequency if you’re unable to do that. Really my issue is just that the blog feels less relatable now. The laundry room is a great example because it is so far out of my skill level, I’ve just been visiting the site less and less lately, mostly to see if you’ve finished yet. However my husband and I are expecting our first baby, so I LOVE any posts about the kids. The post about the anniversary painting is another great example- I’m sure you didn’t come into $800-for-a-painting money recently, but as a post it surprised me because I think MOST people can’t afford that. I guess if you post frequently with some variety it doesn’t matter, but if you are still wanting to maintain a lighter schedule I think it’s better to write about stuff that most people can relate to.
Karen says
I agree that everything feels a lot less relatable now. I think most readers can’t afford to drop the insane amounts of money that the Petersiks have spent recently (new car paid in cash, tons of electrical work, $800 art, $700 nightstand). I’m NOT saying this to rag on them for spending the money — it’s their money, they can spend it however they want, of course! I’m just saying that I kind of miss “what got them here”, as they might say.
Justine H. says
In response to your question. Your blog is my favorite and I check it everyday that you post. It is a little disappointing on days like today when there isn’t a post (but very understandable). We were all warned months ago about a decrease in your posts and family is the number one priority. For me your site is free entertainment and free education on how to do things yourself. It would be different if I was paying for a subscription to your blog then I would have a right to feel cheated out of a post.
Everyone has busy weeks. I know I do. You have to do what is right for your family. I personally like the fab freebies because even though I’m probably not going to win anything it also introduces me to different sites that I didn’t know before. I would also really enjoy the smaller posts that you were talking about. I enjoy reading anything that you post! Keep up the good work and enjoy your family.
Megan says
Hi Guys!
I LOVE your blog and I’m a huge fan. From the outside looking in, it seems like since baby #2, there has been a lot of conflict between work and family life. I think everyone feels this way at some point. Being a parent is HARD!
I love all your posts, long or short, filler or detailed… But if you’re feeling overwhelmed and readers are starting to miss you, maybe it’s time to get some help. Remember that you are working from home, you’re not stay at home parents. Cut yourselves some slack and get a nanny/assistant if you feel like you want to give more than you can. Everyone else does! You can’t (especially with two) realistically expect yourselves to have two full time jobs and care for two kiddos.
ps… I always think it’s ok to say you can’t post on a certain day. People call in sick to regular jobs. It’s ok!
misapb says
The site is missing the variety it used to have. And I would like to see you guys taking more design risks. But that is me, and this is YOUR blog. Creativity naturally ebbs and flows, especially when you’re tackling other big products (Teddy! Book!).
More importantly, how you YOU feel about the blog? When you have a chance, think about what will keep you energized and excited as bloggers. Your readership will follow. No hurry. We love you.
And PS, the fact that you asked for input is yet another example of your AWESOMENESS.
Megan says
I personally love the mix of posts that you do, from the technical/elaborate to the everyday whimsy. I may skim some of the more technical, but often mark in my mind that “YHL did that and I can probably look at it when we go to do x,y, or z.” We are actually working on our living room with a wall inspired by Teddy’s built-ins. I couldn’t have convinced my husband to move forward with it had your posts not been so detailed. But those simple posts are nice to see and be inspired by as well. Enter cliche: “Variety is the spice of life.”
Lisa s says
I like your blog in the current state and I would like small blog posts as well. I like the giveaways because they let me know about companies I would never find (I think that satisfies the purpose of that).
So maybe if you could add one small, fun fluffy post a week, that would be fabulous. Then just keep up what you’ve been doing.
Emma says
You two are in marketing so you’ll figure it out but I say do what feels most authentic to you. Sorry to get all Oprah on you but if you try too hard for page clicks, it will show. Part of your brand’s appeal is that your readers feel you are genuine. I advise you to “do you” -do what feels right for your family at this time in your lives. (Consider hiring a comment reviewer too?)
Hayley H. says
Personally, I would rather read a little post instead of nothing any day- but only if that is within reach for you guys. I actually really miss some of the posts from back in the day about saving money, going green, etc. I would love to see some updates on those things. What’s working, what isn’t, what you wish you still did, etc. Just a thought. I’ll read either way. :)
Jennifer says
Well, since you asked… I would rather see something design related other than radio silence. I understand scaling back a little, but my husband works over 40 hours a week and we have a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 month old, and with the exception of the laundry room posts lately, we’ve accomplished more in our house on the weekends in the past year than y’all have, (or that y’all have blogged about at least). I understand y’all have “super secret book projects” going on now, but haven’t y’all always said you don’t really make much money off the books? It doesn’t seem like it makes much sense to completely neglect your day job to take on these extra projects (books, show house etc.). I just don’t understand. I used to be excited every single time I saw y’all share a new post, and in the past year my enthusiasm has dropped to the point where I realized last week I hadn’t even read a post from you in over a week. It just doesn’t seem like y’all love this house and want to blog anymore… Just my opinion, and only because you asked, I’m normally in the “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all camp.” Whatever is going on, I really do still like y’all and really wish the blog could be as great as it used to be, I just think you would have to put in a lot more work than you have been lately.

Hi Guys, I love you both like we are bff’s but since you asked I feel like you just arent that into us anymore. Like you lost that spark, that love of us and diy. Maybe you need a vacation to somewhere with lots of inspiration so you guys will come back energized with lots of ideas. Every relationship (;)) goes through ups and downs ebbs and flows so I am sure everything will be back to your old YHL enthusiasm soon! We love hearing from you guys no matter what kind of post!

Going to go against the grain here and say I LOVE the longer, more technical DIY posts as of late! I really value how much detail you put into your content, pictures, and videos, and I really trust your candid dissection of the process and the materials. It gives me confidence that I can do it too! I tried making a headboard recently based off a tutorial I saw on Pinterest and it was a *miserable* fail because the poster didn’t outline the necessary materials and correct measurements at the outset, so when we got wallet-deep into the process we were thrown for a loop, and it was very discouraging! Also, your technical DIY posts have gained attention and readership from my fiance (and I’m sure many other readers like him) who is less into decorating and crafting and more into building and DIYing.
Perhaps to spice it up a bit and lighten your load you might create one in-depth technical DIY article per week and then a few light-and-sweet shorties to appease the whole mob of readers? Whatever you do, I agree with the others here — family first! We completely understand (and applaud!) you making that your priority. :)

I don’t mind either way, but boy do I get excited when I see you’ve got a full DIY or renovation post up! With two little kids it’s amazing you even get more than 1 post up per week, you guys are truly superhuman for that. You care for your readers, and it clearly shows, so I would hope we all can show the same care for you and do not demand more than what you are capable of putting out without sacrificing writing and content quality.
Maybe if you know you’re not going to be able to update as regularly, just instagram more! I love seeing little snippets of your daily life, and it doesn’t have to be so in-depth or have professional-level photos. Makes us feel involved in your life without having to add to your already heavy blog posting load! =)
Best wishes,
Averil (Singapore)
