Update: We hoped to have a Thursday post for you guys but this week didn’t go as planned. So sorry!
Update #2: We’d love your thoughts on this thread that popped up on this post. What are your opinions about smaller posts when we can’t write something juicy? Skip them and just own that we can’t post that day with a little update like this one, or would you rather see something small instead of nothing (like a quick organizing update, a Reader Redesign, a dilemma we’re debating, etc)? Thanks for the feedback!
Curtains can make the room. And pillows, well, you can never have too many (at least according to my pillow obsessed wife). This week someone’s going to win $500 to spend at Martha & Ash, a family business that’s focused on fabric goods with quality and craftsmanship. You can splurge on pillows, dog beds, or score yourself some custom drapes, like a striped or two toned option in your choice of over 25+ colors.

John & Sherry – It’s the proverbial fork in the road, so to speak. Such a fine balancing act. The one thing that sticks out in my mind is “keeping it real”. I did not have a problem with the monday-thursday postings because you guys did a great job of explaining your thoughts behind this change and I totally agreed. But, I also get the feeling that there might be some burn-out going on. This blog is like living in a glass house. A 24/7 glass house. Personally, I think you need to get the heck out of Dodge for awhile, no posts, lay low and decide what YOU really want. Your batteries need recharging. Take your beautiful family on a relaxing, fun getaway. Spend a little time deciding what you want to do. You’ll figure it out.
Amy says
the change in content hasn’t bothered me at all. Yes, sometimes I just skim through the posts on installing a door or whatnot, but what are the odds that you’re going to post something that I am interested in 100% of the time? not too good! You’re never going to please all the people all the time. And besides, maybe a year from now I might be installing a door and can search for the post and be so glad it was there, even if I didn’t actually read it the first time around. So, just do whatever you feel like doing. Little posts are fine, no posts are fine, Reader Redesigns are always fun. I like the giveaways, and now I know that every Wednesday there won’t be a post, no biggie. Still love the blog, and I’m happy that you scaled it back for more family time- good for you!

I disagree with Luke — I’ve been following you guys for a few years and my husband and I just recently moved into a house that needs a ton of work — from that perspective I love the longer and more detailed posts that are more infrequent. I’ll agree that it is a shift from your style from a year or two ago, but it seems like a natural shift as you get older, you have another baby to take care of and things outside the blog shift a bit. I think its easy for other people who aren’t you to forget that you live outside your blog and have lives that aren’t discussed here as well.
Erica says
I think you do a great job! I worry you do too many posts, and you have so much to do. It would be great if you slow down a bit. Smaller posts are great! Please do not take Luke’s comments to heart! You are wonderful at what you do!

I, too, am a long-time reader. I enjoy everything you write and refuse to criticize the content. I do love getting my daily fix, though. It’s my special little treat to myself every day to open up the blog and read what’s written here. So, if you ask me to weigh in, I will choose frequency. Anything you write, whether it’s organizing or ironing curtains is better than nothing. I gotta say, though, I love the door jamb posts, too.
ShellyP says
I was bummed when you announced you were decreasing the number of weekly posts but totally understood it was to focus on family and that seemed like the right thing — 100% supportive.
But in the last several months (and I’ve been a DAILY reader for YEARS) the blog has lost some of its magic and unique flava. Too much John and not enough Sherry perchance????
I like the idea of short, frequent posts.
I like the Throwback Thursday idea. You guys have a ton of content. How many of your readers have seen that den makeover from House #1? CLASSIC YHL!!!
Reader Redesign is a good idea too.
Time for a little reinvention to bring the zestiness back.
Love the blog. Love the book. You guys are great. I read you daily. Proud to follow YHL.

Hi J & S,
I feel like your blog goes in phases and that’s just fine. Sometimes you are knee deep in a big project, like your new laundry room, and I really enjoy watching your progress! Then you take a break and I also enjoy the smaller updates and simple projects. As a mom a of 3 year old girl and a baby boy due any day, I love your home made gifts and projects for the kids, their sweet photos, and Clara Convos. So, keep up the good work there! Good for you for slowing down the blog pace and enjoying your children more! While I miss readying so many posts, really, who am I to complain. I might enter a give a way once a month, they are not that interesting to me and my chances of winning always seem so slim.
So, a mix of big and small posts is grand, but I think you are doing a great job no matter.
Sarah K. says
I would LOVE to see some shorter posts mixed in. I realize not everyone loves them…but I miss the personal feel your blog used to have when you were posting more about your family/vacations/parties/etc. I don’t think it hurts the quality of your blog to post extra content, even if it might not be a full-length post or appeal to everyone. I think skipping posts is a riskier move (in terms of keeping readership up) than posting extra “fillers” that some may not like. Love your blog regardless! :)
Eliza says
I think what it comes down to for those who are having ” issues” with the lack of posts, “types” of posts, etc, is that they are just going through major withdrawals! Daily posts were the norm, and now that this has changed they flat out don’t like it!…so it really has nothing to do with the posts themselves, but rather the lack of daily posts. You have no idea how I have been eating up your laundry room. The detailed posts with pics (and funny commentary to boot!), just make it so enjoyable! These are my favorites…. Other blogs I go to where one post a week is the norm, no one is complaining because this is what’s expected. What became expected was lots and lots of posts…so everyone just needs to get used to it..that’s all. There is NO PROBLEM here! We all just feel like you both are our best friends and so when we don’ t hear from you EVERY SINGLE DAY like we were used to we miss you! Nothing has changed as far as I see with your blog…you two are making this world a better place as far as I can see, so I wouldn’t change a thing! You have inspired all of us in ways you will never know!
Christi says
I would love to see smaller posts, during the big projects, I would love to know how often you did laundry, little stuff, like how life is living with two kids and DIYing. Laundry for kids doing sports daily is constant, so my stay at home mom mind goes straight to logistics. I started reading when I found your site looking for kitchen updates and I love the dIY stuff and everyday life stuff (you convinced me to leave conditioner and fabric softener behind). I must say when you were doing all those fix it now things to the last house, I figured you must be moving because you aren’t doing all your big plans. I felt you were doing too much for a while and wondered how you kept up with your home life, love that you are taking time for that and still able to make a living. I didn’t buy the book because I am not that artistic, but we have gutted both bathrooms and did step one of the kitchen and still saving for step two, so I appreciate the details. I did buy the spray paint and change the color of light figures that we couldn’t find anything else we liked better. Still have yet to wear my clothes inside out to paint yet. I still enjoy the site, wish there was more, but you have a life to live, enjoy it!

Small posts preferred over nothing. You guys are doing great though. Thanks for sharing your life and house :)

“You guys are so sweet for trying but you’re never going to please everyone. I say just do what works for you. If its not too much trouble, sure post a short little something about decorating a table or whatever”
Marie, you do realise John and Sherry do this blog full time? It’s not a spare time project. So it is ok for those readers who would like to add what looks like some pretty kindly stated points here.

I rarely read blogs, but yours is the one I follow most frequently. Its the only blog I keep up on!! I’m a busy mom with 6 kids. I love to DIY and I LOVE all your posts. I think it’s fun to try to win a fab freebie. I mentally store the technical posts and love their detail, which I will totally need when I tackle big projects. I love the smaller posts about decor or family. I think the reader redesigns offer a fresh design perspective and I love the reader dilemma’s. I think it’s fun to see real people with real everyday homes get their decor problems solved. I really love your decision making posts. I respect you for not doing sponsored posts and love that I feel your honest opinions come through in your writing. Maybe I really just love your writing and reading about my favorite subjects–home and family. Thank you!!
Lucy S says
Hey John & Sherry!
Since you asked, I’ll share my opinion, too. First of all, I am pretty much a fan of all things you guys do.
Personally, I enter your give aways, but don’t care much about them. (It’s very nice of you to have them, don’t get me wrong!)
Second, yes, I have noticed the heavy technical postings. That is very very important, however. I consider your blog a great source for information on how to do ANYTHING to my home. So whenever I start something, I come search it. I may not hang a door this week, and I didn’t read the whole post, but I know you blogged on it and if and when I hang a door, your blog will be the first resource I check! So I’d say blog away on those in-depth things because you all are great teachers.
Third, I love the itty bitty posts on simple changes.
Finally, I think you two need to live your lives and blog, create art, earn your living in the way that makes you most happy. You can’t please everyone. So sure, we may be able to advise you on the sorts of posts we’d like to read, every day of the week, but in the end I for one am happy to read whatever you post.
Good luck and I’m a loyal reader who seriously checks every day…
:) Hugs from Germany

You do not have to post this, but I just wanted to give props to you and your readers. I read a few blogs, and while I know you portion out what comments are posted, your readers are by far the most polite and awesome commenters of any of the blogs i read. It’s really refreshing to see people respecting a blog/bloggers.

I love any and all posts from you, so my vote is for little posts when you dont have much time. I used to love your reader redesign and also your dilemma posts. I would be happy to see the back sometimes. Also there was a crafty one for a while that I loved. I wouldn’t even mind some “Clara-isms” :)
Sian says
Hi guys
I would much rather see something little than not at all to be honest, i found your blog a couple of years ago and I love it I know this might sound strange but when you don’t blog I really miss you it gives me something to look forward to at 1500 (UK time) every day lol
Roxy says
i love your blog, love your book and cannot wait for the second one, so I hope you’re sending to Poland :P
Anyways, the technical posts are heavy, especially when you’re not doing anything like that yourself, but I still go through them and go wow – you did that all yourself. I personally cannot wait till you finish the laundry room and we can see the finished “product”. I ‘m totally with you on spending more time with your family – you’ve got your priorities where they should be :)
I don’t enjoy the giveways so much, just because I cannot participate and redesigns and before and afters would be awesome and would take some pressure off of you guys… well that is if you don’t have to edit too much.
xx
Roxy says
oh and I cannot believe you need to read all the comments, that’s like a job on its own! :S
Carina says
This first started as a little blog to tell their family & friends about the updates on their first home & that’s what I love about it. Then it unexpectedly grew and grew and grew… as did Sherry & John’s family and the opportunities that came with that. They always said how unreal it felt from a few readers to a few thousand readers so I still completely admire them for how they got here :-)
Their reader base got bigger and bigger, they became more well known and they have lots of different plates they are spinning because of this: the blog, the forum, the showhouse, the product ranges, articles, the book, sponsors, projects etc – all completely viable add ons to support their income… as anyone who is self employed would appreciate! AND not to mention family life… they’re still trying to find their feet juggling two kids – Teddy is only about 5 months old!
Think about everything that goes on behind the scenes of a blog post that we don’t see = projects in the first place + writing about them + collating links + editing + taking photo’s + editing photos + putting on the social media etc! Have all you guys ever noticed how many comments we actually post on blog post? 464 on this one at the moment! Hey, I couldn’t work my way through all those as well as everything else! There is only 2 of them!
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is I will still follow this blog no matter how many times Sherry & John post because I like their honesty, appreciate they are only human and can only do so much!
That said, I also understand that they need to keep more than 1 of their readers happy :-) So, 2 constructive suggestions I can think of for you guys are more down the line of time saving options:
1) Do one of your polls to see what everyone would prefer you to post about – hey that’s a post in itself :-) – it would also save your time reading through all these comments?
2) Get someone to help you guys – a social media person, a proof reader or whatever would work for you guys, to help share the load?

Hi!
Although you’re probably drowning in opinions and replies I would like to chime in because your blog is my all time favorite.
We like your DIY-projects, but LOVE you! Small posts like the one where Sherry crafts or fabric turned wallpaper we get to see your personalities and those posts are the best. I also love the more technical stuff because if I sometime down the line need to install doors I know where to look for help. Also, the giveaways feels like no post at all for us international readers (even if we sometimes can participate). I like that you take time for Teddy (my 2nd son is born the same day witch make it that more interesting to follow you!). But go easier on yourself and make shorter post and post more frequently. If you have fun it will show, hope you don’t hold back too much becaus you fear the quality is low.
Xanthe says
Hiya
You are never going to please everyone, half of the comments are for the big technical posts and the other for small features. You could try to have a set day for different types of posts. i.e. Mon and Thurs biggish posts house related, Wed for the freebie and a Tue for something more family (fav baby/child books etc) or small updates (styling a shelf). This way people will generally know what to expect and can avoid certain days if it doesn’t suit. x

First of all it is your blog and your life, so you need to decide what works best for you and what you want to put out on the net for us readers. I think the comments from readers about the technical posts are true, they are interesting for some people but not for most of us. So you got to keep these in, but mixed with a few lighter posts. The “problem” is you have a new house that you are working on so there are a lot of “big” things to work on and to blog about. When you were at the end of you previous house it was more about the small decorating stuff and family things because that was the fase you where in with that house. For most readers we like to pick up some ideas from you and that happens more from the small decorating or family posts than the big technical ones. So I think it would be good to have a good mix of them all in whataver fase you are in with the house would satisfy the most readers. But just make sure they still feel real and make sure you have time for whatever post you write.
Keep up the good work ! You guys are great !

In my very personal opinion that you can feel free to ignore because I’m a teacher and know nothing about this stuff, its the Fab Freebies that are bringing your quality down. It feels more like your blog is a one stop shop for home advertisements than is is for content. I’ve been reading this blog for almost 5 years and I feel like the freebies have become a way for you to post without really posting. I know you all make money from advertisements and some people like the freebies so I definitely think you should keep them in some other way. BUT, when freebies are the only regular posting I can count on, it definitely makes me read your blog less and less. Is there any way to make those posts part of the sidebar or have a separate page for them?
Sally says
Hi, I do like to see the big DIY’s but also really enjoy seeing and reading the much smaller projects, craft ideas, small small budget makes. For those of us who cant afford the hooge makeovers I’d like to see more styling and cheap, cheery and quick projects/makes. I check your site a few times a week hoping to be inspired, which I am but, with a small budget there’s not much I can put into practice. Still loving your style x

Hi J&S!
I completely understand that you guys decided to cut down to only four posts a week when you had handsome little Teddy. And as everybody else, your weeks doesnt always look the same, and you might not be able to post and blog as intended. ??
But guys, I have to say, I really miss you. And my advice to you would be to go back in time, and read some of your old posts to maybe get some inspiration and examples of what the readers want today. I cant see your personalities shine through your posts anymore, and you seem like you dont quite put your hearts into this like you used to.
I believe I speak for most of your readers when I say that even if this is a DIY blog, it was the people behind the blog we “fell in love” with.
Jess says
I definitely loved your idea, & commitment to your top priority, when you scaled back but, since you’re asking, I have to say that I am skimmimg a lot more than I used to & checking only weekly instead of daily. I figured the technicality side was simply because you were doing the laundry. & the lack of other posts simply because of the added craziness of a baby (i had number three around the same time you had number two so definitely understand this but also hang out for your posts to check whilw breastfeeding!)
A few more house crashes could work for you… Especially if you didnt have to write them but had people send them in & you just posted your favourites?
I also love before & afters, with or without a lot of text.
Anyway, thanks for all the great content over the years. Love the blog.
Christina Norris says
I hate all this negativity you guys are receiving! I’m starting to get defensive for you guys!
I completely understand where everyone is coming from (to a point), BUT at the same time everyone has to be a bit more understanding of your current situation! I will admit I am a newer fan, so I’m lucky enough to go back and read older material for my daily fix.
I do enjoy the daily contests, although I never win! Grrrr! I’m PRAYING I can win one soon! We just moved into our first house 7 months ago, but our DIY projects came to a screeching halt when both of our cars decided to crash and burn! Rambling….
Anyway, I’ll admit the recent posts are technical and kinda boring, but they’re filled with awesome information, which I always save in case a future project pops up in our house!
I loved the first book, (currently working on a project from it this weekend!), and counting down the days for the next book!
You can’t always make everyone happy. My opinion, I would appreciate smaller posts vs the long super informative posts. Either way you’re blog is fabulous and I think you guys do an amazing job! Keep your chins up and know you always have a #1 fan in this gal!
God Bless to you and your beautiful family!

If it was a full week it wouldn’t be missed as much, but being a short week to begin with, the posts were definitely missed. I wouldn’t be so excited about a reader redesign, but a quick cruise through store shelves would be fun and inspiring, or a clara convo would be quick and entertaining. Or even seeing a quick yard update (I feel like it’s been a while and usually you do more of those during the warmer months — unless you just haven’t done much landscaping this summer)…
Liese says
*raising hand* WHAT IF you reserved one post a week to just posting a picture for readers who need advice on a project or room in their house? All your *cough…opinionated* readers could chime in! I think you used to do something like this back in the day. It would be super easy and fast for you, and fun for the rest of us :)
Lynn says
I am ususally short on time, so long posts are not my thing.
I LOVE your short posts about any design topic. The longer posts, unless I’m thinking about doing it myself, I skip through to the progress pics and opinion requests. :)
BUT, LOVE it when it’s something I’m considering doing myself (obviously) OR product reviews like your outdoor fans and washer dryer opinion posts! :)
I LOVE your design sense and enjoy reading about your thought process on finishing a room the most! :)
IMHO – Short posts are AWESOME! :)

More short posts! I like the brief ones as much as the long project ones. The project instructions I just skim and mentally bookmark for if we do a similar project in the future

I have always liked how *real* you’re blog is. And so I appreciate it so much that you sometimes just couldn’t quite get it together–I know that feeling well! But I say, just OWN it and turn the couldn’t-quite-get-it-together story into it’s own mini blog post instead of just a one liner. Ps–I’ve been reading since your backyard wedding!

I read lots of design blogs and want to point out that I realized what Luke said is a trend I’ve noticed over the last several months on several other well known blogs, so much that I’ve started skimming them all much more. I also noticed that after an Alt Summit (maybe last spring) all of a sudden lots of bloggers wrote manifestos about why they accept sponsorships, etc. and readers can take this or leave it. I don’t have a problem with sponsorships, but multiple ones in the same week, or dialed-in sounding ones are too much of a shift from earlier content on your blog and the others I’ve mentioned. I miss the spark from you guys and these other ones, but also agree to the comments that your business has evolved. Making sure whatever you do is an organic shift for you and your brand, is most important, IMO.

I miss your day in the life posts! Maybe spend less time on blog, Facebook, twitter, Instagram comments and use that time to create content for all readers? I used to love seeing your posts twice a day and hope you can bring back the “magic”. Thanks for asking!

Sorry, serial commenting, but this post reminded me.
Social networking is all the rage, so why not do something to connect with your readers! Sherry has never attempted to become a better seamstress, why not find an instructor and do a series of lessons on here and have people follow along? Or a link with some sewist’s blog who has lots of tutorials. I’m sure they’d love the traffic, it would be fresh and you’d grow along with your readers. We aren’t all sitting out here still using hem tape ten years after our first attempt at curtains.
Kristy says
We get to peek into your ‘window’ everyday. Would a peeping Tom expect the person they are peeking in on to do something to suit their fancy? Nope. That sounds super creepy, but what it comes down to is it is your life, your blog. Why should you change who and what you are doing just to suit the people who peek into your ‘window’. Do what feels right for you, do what makes you happy and fills your heart and soul. You started the blog to share with friends and family your process of creating and renovating a home together. You did not start it to make the peeping Toms satisfied. It is your life, your love, share it in the way that works for you and works for your lives. :)

My two sense…I love y’all and everything you post about!! Totally understand when weeks get hairy so no worries there! But yes, I would the reader redesign posts, small posts, or even those thrift store posts. However, I am sure even doing those posts take several hours to write/edit which probably is the whole point of not posting. Again, love everything you guys do, so just know you have a die hard reader here regardless of what y’all end up doing!
Claire says
I love the small posts! Definitely enjoy your reader re-designs, design dilemmas, and stylings. Thanks!

I haven’t been discontent with any of the content you’ve posted. I know the laundry room was a major project, so I expect those projects to take up several detailed posts, and so I love reading the step-by-step posts on those. I know the smaller project posts will come when bigger projects aren’t going on.
I am so glad you have been able to cut back a little although I know that with two to take care of now, it may not even feel like you have cut back. YHL is still my absolute favorite blog on the web, and I can’t wait for Book #2.
Would I mind seeing more family pics/posts? No, I’d love it! Those children of yours are so precious. Would I like to see more little project posts? Sure, because sometimes I might be ready to tackle a little project in time and finances sooner than one of the bigger ones — although those are there waiting, too! I really enjoy the Reader Redesigns, too, because I sometimes glean things that might be useful in one of my spaces.
Keep up the great work, and whatever you decide to post, I’ll be reading it! Keep enjoying those sweet children. They grow up way too fast. :-)

Have been a longtime lurker, almost never commenter … Can’t help but imagine that, if this were my blog, the fun would’ve begun to wane right around the time total strangers became so invested that they started making demands or hypercritical comments. Proof of success, for sure, but jarring and creepy nonetheless. Naive as I am, some of the comments on this site have blown me away – I just didn’t know people like that were out there, and it made it clear to me that I could never do this.
You two are why we are all here – you do what’s right for you and your family. Life has so many different stages and I doubt they repeat. Your talents will ensure success in whatever form/platform you move into. In some ways, I think all this is just proof of a post-blog evolution.
Prayers, warm wishes, and gratitude.
Liz K. says
Wow, I’ve read a LOT of the comments about this, and Laurie, I completely agree with you.
Yes, feedback from Readers is good and necessary, but ultimately you can only do what you can based on the situation of your life at this moment.
Last year, when we had our 4th baby, it totally knocked me out of the loop for a while. I had a LOT of stress leading up to the her birth, and it all caught up with me. I never had any post-partum depression with my other 3 babies, but I think all the stress and busyness during my pregnancy triggered some depression in me. I eventually got out of it, but it took at least 7-8 months.
Perhaps I’m reading into things, but I get the feeling that you guys may feel a little exhausted and on auto-pilot, which may be why several people are saying that it feels like you lost some of your spark. Hang in there. Do what you need to do on the blog. I’m praying for you.
Karina says
Hi! I pop into your blog every day or two and would love even the smallest post of a small update. I tend to skim the longer posts as I am not DIYing so don’t need all the info, but think it’s great that you share it for people who will find it helpful. I also enjoy the updates on your kids as I have two small boys myself.
Sending lots of love from Namibia xxx

You guys are rockstars. Do what works for you.
When nothing was posted yesterday, I wasn’t upset, I was actually got a little concerned for you guys! My thought process was “oh no! there’s not a post, I hope nothing is wrong!” Then I looked through old content I had forgotten about for my moments of home-related internet bliss.
Maybe you could repost old posts and talk about what you would do differently now? Also, I love reader redesigns. As far as I’m concerned, you could do one of those a week and I’d be happy.
Or, if the day turns into a bad day, just don’t post! It’s okay. We all have off days.
Patricia says
I am never going to hang a door … prepping and painting it is about as far as I’ll ever get. Some of the more technical stuff you’ve been posting is just not “me”. I’d love to see posts about design dilemmas and how and why of your choices.
Suzie says
Hi guys. I am happy to see that you guys seem to care what your readers think. I commented to you guys a while back, that I felt like you had lost your spark and it appears that I am not alone in that thought. :(
As a reader of yours since the very beginning, I completely understand things change, but when this is your business, you kind of have to push through and do it! You can’t just tell a boss in a “real” job, sorry…can’t do it today. I know you guys have said that you never really asked for all of this success, but when your readers are a direct part of your success (page clicks, buyers of your book, purchases through your old sponsors, purchases of your Liberty line, your Shades of Light line, etc.), you kind of owe us more than you have been putting out lately. It’s almost like a slap in the face when you just don’t post. You guys know this isn’t just a little blog about your daily lives. It has become so much more than that and honestly, I personally would rather just see you quit and get back into the workforce, than see half-assed work on the blog. I apologize for being so harsh, but reading for so long, I almost think of you guys as friends, in a weird way…and these are things I would say to a friend. People genuinely care about you guys and to just phone it in, seems really disrespectful to the people who have supported you (literally and figuratively) over the years.
Good luck with your decision!
E says
I’m with the crowd that likes smaller posts as long as they are not blatant filler. PLEASE don’t mutilate any more beautiful furniture with a sharpie pen in the name of blog content! Reader submissions are great, I also loved the goodwill and window shopping posts. I’m also really enjoying the laundry room updates.
Also while you’re soliciting comments…I want to echo the sentiment that your omgsobusy! attitude is annoying because we as readers know that this is the full time job of 2 adults. Many of us work full time outside the home, have kids, other commitments and still manage to work on our homes. Even though we know fab freebies take time to set up, coordinate, etc, 2 able-bodied adults working full time were only able to produce 1 post this week- and half of that work (hanging the laundry room door) was done weeks ago?? It almost seems like the tone in your writing, and even asking for our opinions like this shows that you don’t want to do this anymore.
I hope none of this comes across as harsh- I’ve enjoyed reading the last few years (with the occasional side-eye). I just hope you find the balance and confidence you need in your lives.
