Wow. You guys are a lot more opinionated about the periodic table than I had assumed. Anyways, random.org selected the winner of this giveaway as… Andi W. (who likes Sodium for all of the salty snacks it provides, but admitted “My inner nerd wants to vote adamantium.”) Congrats Andi!
Hold onto your seats, chemistry nerds. We’re giving away some magnesium this week. It’s coming in the form of Oreck’s latest and lightest-weight upright vacuum ever – the Magnesium. In fact, at less than 8lbs it weighs in at about half the poundage of an ordinary upright. Not to mention its skinny but strong frame slides naturally under furniture and other hard-to-reach dust bunny havens. Oreck’s also throwing in the Ultimate Handheld Vac to round out your cleaning repertoire – and to boost the prize value to nearly $600!
- PRIZE: An Oreck Magnesium upright vacuum and the Oreck Ultimate Handheld Vac (a $599 value).
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “Mg ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … (you ready for this?) what’s your favorite element on the periodic table? Are you a big fan of Oxygen because of the whole breathing thing? Or Sodium because you’re a salty food addict? Or perhaps good ol’ Au & Ag (aka Gold and Silver)?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, June 27th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- DISCOUNT: 15% off any Oreck product with code YOUNGHOUSELOVE (valid through July 9, excludes sale or refurbished items)
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Oreck.

I was always partial to Fe (iron)…took Chemistry in HS 12 years ago & I still remember this one!
Alison says
Mg ME! I think I would have to pick hydrogen as my favorite element. It’s such a useful element!
Speaking of science, I took the test for TJHS and made the semi-final cut. My strengths lie more in the History and Literature vein, but a number of my friends did attend TJ and I think we were the same year as John. I bet we have some mutual acquaintances from back in the day!

Rebecca says

I was not good at science and it was so many years ago since I was in school…I am much more an English/music person. But I guess I would go with oxygen.

I like K, or Potassium, because my name starts with K, and that was the location I always started with when I had to memorize the chart back in 8th grade!
Cary says
Mg ME!
I tried to think of an element not in someone else’s comments, but all the good ones Argon. I say “Ar” because my dad sells gases and this is what kept food on our table growing up!
Roxanne says
Mg M! Co, I think I must pick cobalt because it is used to create that beautiful, brilliant blue cobalt glass. Plus, I’m attracted to lots of things space and I hear it often has presence on meteorites.

Ok hard to choose but mine is a punch line to one of my favorite chemistry jokes. Q: what do you do to a dead chemist? A: you Barium :-)
P.S. I dressed up for Halloween as H2O, which went along with another favorite. So there’s this water molecule, one hydrogen says to the other, “Hey I think I lost an electron.” the other hydrogen asks, “Are you sure?” the original replies, “Yeah, I’m positive!”
Lauren says
mg me! ag!

Mg ME! I did a project in high school on boron, so I’m a bit partial to it, although I’m not sure I could tell you much about it now…

I always loved lead because it’s symbol was Pb which I always remembered by calling it “plumbum” (which is it’s latin name, but don’t quote me on it) and I had to take Chem and O-chem in College, so I am a super nerd!
