Wow. You guys are a lot more opinionated about the periodic table than I had assumed. Anyways, random.org selected the winner of this giveaway as… Andi W. (who likes Sodium for all of the salty snacks it provides, but admitted “My inner nerd wants to vote adamantium.”) Congrats Andi!
Hold onto your seats, chemistry nerds. We’re giving away some magnesium this week. It’s coming in the form of Oreck’s latest and lightest-weight upright vacuum ever – the Magnesium. In fact, at less than 8lbs it weighs in at about half the poundage of an ordinary upright. Not to mention its skinny but strong frame slides naturally under furniture and other hard-to-reach dust bunny havens. Oreck’s also throwing in the Ultimate Handheld Vac to round out your cleaning repertoire – and to boost the prize value to nearly $600!
- PRIZE: An Oreck Magnesium upright vacuum and the Oreck Ultimate Handheld Vac (a $599 value).
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “Mg ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … (you ready for this?) what’s your favorite element on the periodic table? Are you a big fan of Oxygen because of the whole breathing thing? Or Sodium because you’re a salty food addict? Or perhaps good ol’ Au & Ag (aka Gold and Silver)?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, June 27th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- DISCOUNT: 15% off any Oreck product with code YOUNGHOUSELOVE (valid through July 9, excludes sale or refurbished items)
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Oreck.

Is it bad that I never paid attention in chemistry class so I don’t remember any of the elements? I could really use a new vacuum though!
Rachel says
Mg Me!
Favorite element would have to be Au!
Emily says

I gotta say I am a big fan of the periodic table, period. Would be thrilled to find a nice vintage periodic table to hang in my house!
Laura says

Good thing you included a link to the periodic table because I sure couldn’t remember any elements on my own. (Chemistry = not my strong suit.) I like chlorine because I was a swimmer growing up. Also, the ones in those last rows are fun because they have crazy names (Europium, Americium, Californium…)
Christy G. says

I like W which is tungsten, a really cool metal!
Amy says

Kristina says
Mg ME! Oxygen because it is the most essential element I think we all need to exist! I was so trying to remember the elements, or at least one without looking, but after looking, they all started coming back.

I like He because it makes stuff float :)
Abigail says
“Mg ME!
He. Because of ballons, and funny talking.

MG ME!! How about the one I dislike the most…which happens to be magnesium. I had to be on Magnesium sulfate for Pre eclempsia after I had my Third baby. It was terrible!! This Mag looks much better!!
Catherine S. says
Mg ME!
My fav element would have to be osmium–it not only is a funny word to say, but it’s also the heaviest element (2x as dense as lead…).
Sarah says
Mg ME!
And titanium, because it’s beautiful. :)
MBG says
Mg me!
Favorite element… Carbon. I love being a carbon-based organism!
Trina says
Mg me! My favorite is Fe, iron. The only reason I could ever remember it was because one of my favorite bands in high school was called Five Iron Frenzy and they used Fe instead of Iron. I’m a dork.
Alison says

Ok, the kids and I were just talking about this the other day because we said we like how magnesium burns in that big flash–how that is so cool. Other than that, I love Na (sodium) because of the bonding properties, and I have always had a crush on the noble gasses (like Argon) because they just sound, well…noble. How would it be to name your kid Argon? Not that I would b/c my husband would give me ‘that look’–I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.
Can you tell I liked Chem in school?
sasha huff says
MG ME!
AU because I love gold :)

Mo says
MG ME!!! Gold and silver for spending and salt for eating!!
Valery says

And I love cobalt…more for the color than the actual properties of the element
Sarah Harvey says
Mg ME! I’m going to go with Pr, Praseodymium. I have no idea what it is or how to say it. But it looks cool. Reminds me of something you’d name….a dinosaur.
Erica T says
Mg ME! Umm, I’ll be random and say helium, ‘cuz it’s fun to get a squeaky voice from it. :)
Sarah says
haha, just realized that h2o is a few elements together, but whatevs, I like H & O equally then. Or maybe I like h 2x as much as o? :)
Nicole says
Mg ME! H – because it’s the first one and I like that it’s only one letter.

I always loved Cu (copper) on the periodic table. I always remembered it and I like that copper was a real thing that I could hold in my hand, and also that it turned green-blue when it oxidized. I’m very visual…
Katie says
Mg ME!
I’ll say Ti. Strong, light, and super functional, but it doesn’t seem to be getting any love over the showier elements!
Rachael says
Mg Me! I’m a fan of silver (au) myself- and it would be really, really nice to own a new vacuum instead of the hand-me-down that still makes my house smell like my sister’s dog!
Joanna says
Mg ME! I enjoy breathing so it’s got to be oxygen.
Heather says
Mg ME!
Oxygen has never done me wrong. I’ll stick with that. :)
