My all time favorite picture is one that I WISH were gracing my walls, but instead it has been sitting in my parents garage for over 50 years. It is a painting by (another Swedish artist) Christian Von Schneidau entitled “Vikingars Ankomst Till Vinland” and was commissioned in the late 1930s by my great uncle. It is a landscape painting of Leif Erickson stepping onto Vinland (Newfoundland), where present day Lanse aux Meadows is. It is very similar in style to the work he did for the Swedish American Museum in Philadelphia. http://www.waymarking.com/gallery/image.aspx?f=1&guid=882dacf9-50c6-492b-987b-f1c80b65b153
I just LOVE that painting mainly for its historical content and because it has been handed down from generation to generation. Only nowadays…who has a 5 x 10.5 foot wall to display it on? Currently…not I. So for now I keep wishing that maybe one day it will be mine and that my husband won’t freak at having a wall covered with a bunch of old Scandinavians.

I just finished a piece where I used paint and vinyl. Painted the canvas one color, put vinyl down, painted over that then removed it, and repeated the process until I had a great piece of custom art! Easy peasy!

First of all, this is my first time commenting, but I’ve been following your blog for a month or so now and I’m addicted. Thanks for sharing your awesome ideas and a bit of life with all of us, John and Sherry!
And, second, my favorite one-of-a-kind piece of art in my house is a sketch my grandpa did of FDR when he was younger. My grandpa loved to draw – a hobbby many people didn’t realize about him. I found a bunch of his drawings in a buffet we inherited from him. I also have some really great watercolors my aunt made, but I think the drawings my grandpa will always hold a special place in my heart.

When we travel, we always buy a local piece of art as a souvenir instead of some kitschy item. Our home is surrounded by prints and art from all of our travels. My favorite is a handpainted piece we purchased on our honeymoon from a small gallery in Paris.

Yeah, a giveaway for Canadians too! My favourite piece of art in our home is brand new. We found a map of our city from the 1800s at a flea market. We have an old house and were able to locate our street on the map, so we’re very happy to have it on our wall. Thanks for the giveaway.

I have always liked the mona lisa and so my parents got that painting for me. Now it is actually on the attic. I need to get that one back down before the mice start eating it!
