Since our eyes are constantly peeled for fun nursery art lately, we’re psyched to bring you this week’s giveaway from Grace Hester Designs. And even if you’re not expecting a little one, you might just spot the perfect piece to commemorate your wedding, your brood, or even your love of foreign languages amongst Grace’s type and silhouette-based art.
We love the idea of our little beanette learning some Spanish numbers or French animal names through these punchy designs (or even picking up a Chinese character or two). And it’s because of Grace’s fun range of prints that we couldn’t bear to narrow down this week’s prize to a specific group of designs – so TWO of you are gonna score a $50 credit toward anything in Grace’s etsy shop.
Here are this week’s entry details:
- PRIZE: A $50 credit towards any item from Grace Hester Designs
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GRACE ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …share with us your favorite word or saying from another language. Do you love the way a certain Italian word rolls off your tongue? Or maybe you have a go-to phrase that you learned when traveling abroad? If nothing else, is there an English word that sounds especially funny to you in Pig Latin?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, February 17th at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: All over the globe!
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

GRACE ME (please!)
My favourite word is ‘prego’ which means you’re welcome in Italian. My high school friend and I often speak ‘italian’ or the small bits we can actually remember, when we see each other and there’s certainly a lot of ‘prego’ going on – love it!

Grace Me!!! Those prints are beautiful! My favorite phrase is “Sarang-hae yo” [????], which is “I love you” in Korean. I think I moreso like the way it looks in English than the actual phrase itself. “Sarang” [?? – love) just looks really pretty to me, hehe. Not sure if the Korean characters will show up, but putting them out there anyway.

I hope you’ll GRACE ME with the winning number for one of these wonderful pieces.
I love words, and there are many that I enjoy saying, both in English and in other languages. For example, in Italian, it’s delicious to say “illuminati,” and the name Alessandra; in Spanish, “Cenicienta” (Cinderella); the French phrase “je ne sais quoi,” as in “she has a certain je ne sais quoi…;”
Currently, one of my favorite words in English is “liminal.” It describes the in-between, as in the time/space between dusk and night.

The first phrase I mastered in my college French class – “Ce n’est pas un coeur. C’est une tete.” Yes – it means “It is not a heart. It is a head.” It’s two random sentences from an assignment sheet, but I love the way they sound. :)

When I was fifteen my family took a month long road trip in an RV, on one of the first mornings we stopped at a Dunkin Donuts to grab breakfast … there was a man in with a motorcycle helmet standing in front of me but when he turned around to say hello – he spoke french to me. “Polli Vu France??” And I’m butchering the spelling, I know … but I wrote in my journal that day that a man spoke french to me!! I thought it was the BEST THING EVER. And since then, I’ve always loved a motorcycle riding guy … because maybe, just maybe he spoke french to me once :)

My word would have to ‘popty ping’ – the glorious Welsh word for mirowave. Sounds so much more fun than the usual name! And to be cheeky and add another, the welsh words for butterfly are also rather fantastic: ‘pili pala’ and ‘iar fach yr haf’ – which translates literally as little summer hen

I don’t think I really have a favorite phrase.
I do hate trying to read something thats really graphic and then realizing that it isn’t in English.
Gets me almost every time.

Loving the foreign language aspect of this – I’m hoping to teach my husband Spanish so we can raise our children to speak both languages and they’ll have a head start on what took us so long to learn (I didn’t start learning Spanish until 7th grade… but at least had gotten to learn some Latin and Russian (which I’ve long since forgotten) prior to that).
As for my favorite saying – hmm… probably c’est la vie… even though I’m not normally a fan of French.
Tara says
Grace me: Before grad school I was a nanny to a half German little man. He had this really fun alliteration book all in German. One of the little stories was something about a thigh, which in German is Oberschenkel. Every time we had that page, we’d both crack up, and to this day and every time I have to use it, which isn’t too frequent, I mean how often do we talk about our thighs in a foreign language :-), I giggle a little to myself.

GRACE ME!!! My favorite saying in another language is the sign for “I love you.” Or how my daughter interpreted it and then expressed it herself. At 3.5 years old she will still do it from time to time. She will hold her hand palm out, by her ear, fingers down, elbow up. (usually only with her daddy).
