We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.
Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).
Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).
Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:
- PRIZE: United Skull of America & Ornamental Skull prints from Skull-A-Day, Skull Wreath & Puzzle Skull from Cardboard Safari
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SKULL ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …tell us about your best / favorite / weirdest Halloween costume of all time. Links to pictures are encouraged. :)
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 14th at 8pm EST
- PRIZE SHIPS: USA only
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

My best Halloween costume was a girl gone wild… and it was a WILD costume. No one knew what I was until they asked me… and then I flashed them! It was a crazy costume, but it was okay since I was the only girl at the party and everyone else was a gay male! :)

Skull me, please.
No pictures, but my personal favorite was in college, where I wore a vintage sleeveless gown and dyed-to-match pumps (pratically free and the thrift store) and a sash declaring me Homecoming Queen and a tiara, and I carried a (toy hand-)gun.

My best Halloween costume was actually a group costume: there about 7 of us and we went as all the characters from the movie, The Royal Tennenbaums. I was Margot. We won a prize for the effort at a bar that night. So much fun.

I went as a Dice – big box, which I painted white and then poked out a few holes for my arms – very DIY and pretty comfortable, too!

One of my most memorable halloween costumes was the year I wanted to be a bride. My mom worked hard on my costume, but unfortunately no one got to see it! Minnesota was struck by the Halloween SnowStorm of ’91 and everyone wore snowpants and jackets trick or treating.

My favorite Halloween costume was a lobster costume that my mom made me when i was eight. It was really neat, she made it with antennas and all.

I dressed up as Patty Hearst last year — with beret and plastic machine gun. That was my favorite costume.

my favorite costume ever was probably the clown costume that my mom made for me when I was little (like 5 or 6). She made my younger brother a matching clown costume, too.

I really want to try to dress up as this with my husband: http://www.craftster.org/blog/?p=3928. I saw it and thought it was one of the most creative costumes I’ve seen. My husband will be the pinata, of course, and I’ll hold the whacking stick!

SKULL ME! The best halloween costume that I have ever seen was last year when my uncle dressed up as the game “Operation.” He made it himself, was inexpensive, but SO good!

I love halloween costumes more than life itself and begin prepping for them months in advance. I think last year’s was my fave. I was the guy from the old Operation game, removable organs and all.

SKULL ME!!! Hmm, what was my favorite costume? I didn’t really dress up much after the age of 13, so let’s go with the year that I was a gypsy, with bangles that made a tinkling noise because of coins, and a colorful wool skirt that had belonged to my mother when she was younger. It turned out to be quite the get up!

This year I will be Super Mom. Our whole school staff is going to be the “superhero” of our choice…with the principal being Wonder Woman. We chose that one for her! Last year she was Snow White, and we were…well, you can take a guess.

I love this giveaway – so creative!
My worst Halloween costume, by far, was the year that I just made a hat that said, “This is my costume” and wore regular clothes otherwise. I was around 14 and just didn’t care :)

My favorite Halloween costume is a red and white polka dot clown costume my mom made when my older sister was a toddler. In its 40+ years of existance, my 3 siblings and I have worn it and each of my mom’s 6 grandkids have worn it. We’re just waiting for my youngest to get a little bigger so he can take his turn.

I have no cool costumes to share, I am notoriously bad at Halloween. Maybe the funniest was the year I thought it’d be fun to attempt Marilyn Monroe, but with my dark hair and features, and 6’1″ frame, I just ended up looking like a drag queen. :)

I was a brand new breastfeeding mom, so…
My little baby wore a white t-shirt with the words “Got Milk” on it. I wore the white t-shirt with the word “Milk” on it!

This is a weird one, youngsters. I have to admit, though, I am really impressed with how well Alaska and California work to create the shape.
Weirdest costume? Probably the year I tried to be Captain Obvious.

Hmmmm. Maybe the year my bff and I were about 8 and went as lunch bags (courtesy of those huge lawn clean up bags). We wrote names in sparkly glitter and cut eye & arm holes. Simple, easy, cheap!

SKULL ME! My husband and I are obsessed with Twin Peaks so I decided to go as Laura Palmer one year–as she looked when she was found on the beach in the first episode. It was definitely macabre but awesome. However, it was a little difficult to negotiate the plastic sheeting I was wrapped in.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays but, since I grew up in another country where it is not celebrated, I never wore a costume in my entire life :( However I have compensated this by creating some amazing costumes for my kids and by decorating big time.

Not my costume, but I once saw someone dressed up as a person in a show– they made a kind of halo from which hung a shower curtain and stuff… so funny!

My favorite Halloween costume is when I dressed up as a toothbrush. I took a large piece of foam core and cut out the shape of a head, and then poked pipe cleaner into it as the bristles, leaving room for my head, and stuffed it in the back of my shirt, and so my body was the handle part. And then i got a clear car floorboard mat, and made that into the “grip.” My husband (boyfriend at the time) was a “dab of toothpaste,” and carried around breath spray and sprayed it in peoples mouths. Ah, good memories. You can see a pic of me (i don’t have one of hubby and I together though)on facebook, http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30142566&op=16&o=global&view=global&subj=17101979&id=17100943.

my fave costume was from when i was 10 – my favorite animal was a koala, so my mom sewed me a costume from fur fabric. the kicker was the black oval nose that she attached to the nosepiece of my totally nerdy purple glasses i wore at the time. i was so not cool!
