If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

I love walls painted with stripes. So fun!

I have some totally 80s mirrored closet doors. One of my next projects will be to stencil the wall opposite with a medium-sized, all-over peony motif. When it is reflected in the mirrors, it will look like my dressing area is glamorously wallpapered!

I absolutely love how some nice white paint can make something look so fresh and new! I recently updated an old table and chairs and the white paint makes it look BRAND NEW! Love it!

I love the idea of taking a big white canvas, taping off lines in any pattern you want, filling in the white space with different colored paint and making a big, bold, geometric art piece for your house!

I haven’t done it yet, but I got a free sample of paint a while back & I picked out a pale super-girly pink. My house is pretty gender-neutral (out of deference to the hubs) & I’m going to use the pink to paint the insides of my dresser drawers. I’ll get a little secret pick-me-up every time I pick out my pjs.

I love almost anything (even previously ugly furniture) if it’s painted robin’s egg blue!

I like to take 12×12 canvas and paint a few in large blocks of color with a little bit of an accent color. Cheap decoration and fun and easy too.

We had a local artist do a sweet and charming mural in our nursery before our first child was born. It’s a landscape of rolling hills, lush greenery, and a flowing stream – all presided over by a clear blue cloudless sky. I still love it. I love that it has grown with our daughter from baby to sassy little lady. We’re moving and it’s one thing I’ll really miss!
I also love a pink/orange color combo. I’ve seen a bright tangerine/hot pink pack punch in a pre-teen bathroom. I was so inspired I did our powder room in a soft-almost-nude-orange with red and pale blue accents. Sounds garish, but it’s a lovely effect in a windowless room.

Shine on me! What beautiful work. My favorite use o paint was when my parents had my childhood bedroom painted blue with white clouds. Always felt like I was daydreaming under the sky. :)

We just finished painting the master bedroom of our first house! We painted it a lovely and calming gray-ish blue color. It contrasts our white furniture perfectly. Would love to add a stencil or decal to spruce it up a little!

SHINE ON ME! I love going into a store like Home Goods and finding items that with a little vision (and some good paint) can be transformed into unique pieces.

I’ve always loved the idea of painting worn out wood floors – either a solid color, or a cool stencil or checkerboard pattern. I’ve never had the opportunity to try it out though.

My favorite paint experiment involved painting the top 18″ of my bedroom walls a lovely azure blue, adding white paint to the tray and painting the next 18″, repeated all the way down while everything was still wet. The result was a gorgeous, sky-like feeling.

My favorite paint project was when I surprised my volleyball coach with a jungle mural in his nursery. Future mom and dad went out of town for the weekend and I went to town painting a lifesize giraffe that gazed lovingly on the future-baby that would be in the crib. It was so awesome to see their reactions when they got home. :)

I love to experiment with new colors.
Thanks!

So far, I’ve mostly been using paint on our walls (and boy, did they need it!), but I’m looking forward to getting out some cans of black spray paint, and painting our hodgepodge of photo frames to get a more unified decor scheme going

SHINE ON ME! I love using paint to completely transform a room. The best color choice I ever made was using Martha Stewart’s “Scone” in all the primary living areas of my house. The warm neutral with slight green undertones changes with the light and looks amazing with white trim.

I love how paint transforms furniture. My husband and I spray painted a toy box my dad made me and my sister as kids from brown to black to match our new family room furniture and store some cozy blankets.

I haven’t done too much with paint since I’ve lived in a rental, but I have two favorites so far. When I was about ten, I helped my mom sponge paint my room so that it was the summer sky, with blue sky and clouds (the clouds got thicker and thicker as they went up until the ceiling only had a few hints of blue). The second are the side tables that I painted for our apartment. They were from my parent’s old bedroom set that my mom bought as unfinished furniture and stained long long ago. I couldn’t find anything cheap, sturdy, black, and with a drawer when I was moving out of state and setting up my apartment as a newlywed, so my mom and I painted them black and they work great.
I think the common thread of my favorite paint projects is that my mom was there to help!

Anything monogrammed is fun! For gifts to some very preppy friends I have painted a bar stool and gotten a monogram sticker (rather large one)! Who wouldn’t want a fun decorative seat to use when putting on make up or just to add a splash of color in the room!

SHINE ON ME! Love using paint to update the look of dated fixtures. I recently painted over my front entry door’s brass hardware with a hammered-finish bronze metallic. Looks amazing; guests keep admiring my “new” hardware.

My favorite use of paint that I’ve ever seen (that I can remember anyway) is from A Penny Saved when she hand-painted her dining room walls to look like wallpaper. You can see it here (http://www.apennysavedblog.com/2009/08/mural-tutorial-aka-what-i-should-have.html). AMAZING! I was so inspired!

In my old house, I was inspired by a sneak peak into Eleanor Grosch’s home on Design*Sponge. In her living room, she had an olive green below the chair rail and mint above it. I went to Lowe’s to check out the colors and went a little darker on the olive and a little blue-er on the mint for my kitchen/den. It was a great combination in a 1960s ranch.

We just did a paint project on our front door. There is a huge window and we didn’t want a curtain but we did want privacy. We decided to frost it with some spray paint. We created a design with painters tape and also scratched out our house number!

I’m currently in the process of painting an old sturdy bookshelf. It was a yucky faux wood laminate, but it’s going to be white.
