If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

I love the crisp white paint on our adirondak chairs on the porch!

Shine on me. I’ve been known to paint wood. GASP! I’e been systematically painting all the oak trim a glossy white throughout our house for the past 5 years. It makes all the difference in the world to making the room look updated and fresh.

I love how paint can transform anything and everything. From old furniture to thrifty decor finds, to whole rooms and kitchen cabinets. I don’t always like the process of painting – but I always love the results!
Jenna says
Shine on me! I use paint in hundreds of ways… painted pots to showcase my address on my front porch, painted walls, and painted pants. (on accident) Now all I need is a painted kitchen!

I love painting bathrooms and kitchens. You can change the look of the room in a matter of half a day!

SHINE ON ME!
I love taking older furniture and giving it new life through a coat of paint. Most recently, I repainted our baby-to-be’s dresser/changing table — now, if only he could just get here, we could put it to good use!

SHINE ON ME! I love painting furniture in funky unexpected colors~

I love it when I come across some object at a rummage sale and immediately know when a quick coat of paint will transform it into a treasure. I recently nabbed two scrached ceramic urn-style vases at a church rummage sale for less than $3 total. A quick coat of flat black spray paint and Voila! They look like big ticket items from a posh shop.

Oh! I LOVE paint! My favorite paint transformation has to be our fireplace. I painted it with stone-like textured spray paint and it has completely updated and improved the look of our living room.

I love painting old furniture a fun, new color. Well, I don’t really love the painting part, but I do love the end result!

some happy blue paint (and some chalkboard spray paint!) helped me change a ho-hum bedside table i’ve had my whole life into something bright and fun for a kid’s room!

My sister and I are obsessed with a color called “rainwashed.” I use it for my guest room and office and she has it in her dining room. I’m considering painting anything I can get my hands on that color too. It’s very light and fresh.

Love how a little paint can make old, junky stuff look modern and flawless. Just painted an old wooden dolphin for my daugther’s room. Looks like a big ceramic modern piece now.

One shot of a color that does not seem to “go” with anything else in the room!
Abigail says
Shine on me! We just repainted a cabinet in the bathroom and it totally reformed the whole room! I’m tempted to just hang out in there!

SHINE ON ME!! Spray paint has done wonders for cheap/ugly Salvation Army finds.

SHINE ON ME! Living in Carytown, I love to walk through local neighborhoods and check out homeowners’ cool color combinations of painted brick + a painted door. This vibrant area brings out a lot of creativity in people!
(Can’t wait for Clover to open, and I don’t even have kids… Is that weird?)

I just painted my craft room Jadite Green – okay, it was supposed to be that color. I think it needs some stencils now to make it look stunning.

My favorite paint project was taking an ugly dark wardrobe to a light and airy piece with white paint.

I’m in the middle of redesigning our living room, and I just finished painting an old coffee table a nice mustard gold and covered it with a nice dark stain to bring out the old wood grain…it looks awesome! And there’s always the nursery walls painted 2/3 up with asparagus green and finished with hand painted woodland scenes as if it were a decal or stencil. Paint can transform anything! Too many ideas, too little time.

My two favorite uses of paint are (1) inside a closet or somewhere unexpected and (2) when stencils are painted a shade lighter or darker than the wall so that it gives a subtle effect.

Last summer I took an outdated redwood patio chair and painted it glidden’s “golden pineapple”. It is now a bright, cheery yellow color. I added a red pillow with aqua & yellow accents – and I absoulutely love it!!!

I’m just starting to get interested in stencils – I never liked the teeny ones of yore. I love the new large graphics!
Jessica says
SHINE ON ME!
Since I still live in a rental that is particular about painting the walls, I paint on extra large canvases that are big enough to make an impact in the room almost as much as painting is.
Lindsay S says
Won’t you SHINE, SHINE, SHINE ON ME…
I love greys with almost any other color. Our basement had terrible 70’s wood panelling, I painted the walls grey and the panelling an off-white tan color – now it looks like a vintage beachy getaway!
Can never go wrong with grey!
