If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Shine on Me! I helped a friend in college paint dark and light vertical stripes on her sun-room room in college! It was so different and it worked out so well!

I haven’t painted anything yet in my new place, but back when I lived with my mom I painted my bathroom myself. I think I was most proud of it because I bought a gallon of paint (that was returned) for less than 10 bucks. So it was an extremely affordable project.

Just getting into the painting of furniture. We just moved into a rental so I’ve been looking for something to curb my painting itch! I think furniture is just right!

Oh Sunny, please…
Shine On Me!
We just bought a new house so we really have only used paint for one thing – painting our walls but the one I love the most so far is we painted our kitchen a nice cool gray to de-pink-ify our dated pickled oak cabinets since remodeling them isn’t in the cards right now. It looks elegant and makes me so happy!
The second great change is that we have a wonderful sunroom but the previous owners used to raise Dobermans and sell them as police dogs (?!?) and the sunroom was obviously the domain of the doggies. Needless to say the walls and floor were destroyed and it smelled like…wet dog and dog poop in there all the time. Some elbow grease, power washing, and a new coat of paint makes that room feel like ours – not like a former doghouse. Thank you paint!
I am looking forward to using paint to design rather than just fix flaws soon! Thanks!

My husband painted the walls in our bedroom a soft brown color and a cream for the ceiling. But he dropped the cream down about 6 inches into the brown on the walls to create a crown-like effect. It makes our room look much more dramatic and we love it!

My favorite paint project (to date) was our dining room at our old house. We used a metallic bronze paint (Dutch boy, I think?) and a sponge to stripe the walls- it looked like wallpaper & it was beautiful! We outgrew our old house & like our new one…but I miss my old dining room. I am currently working on my new dining room and I haven’t found the right inspiration just yet.

I recently painted a dresser for my boys’ room. It was really dark to start with so I painted the body white and the face a deep turquoise. I love how white freshens up furniture and now I’m tempted to paint my dining room table and chairs white!

My favorite paint effects use tape. I haven’t been brave enough to put any on my walls, though, for fear of accentuating my 90-year-old house’s rhomboid tendencies!

I’ve recently been obsessed with painting antique treasures I find, anything from mirrors to vintage sign letters, to give them a modern look.

SHINE ON ME!
My favorite use of paint lately has been updating furniture of all varieties. I love to find things at antique stores that have a unique shape or design and to spruce it up with a bright and happy color! Recently, I even acquired a few tree stumps that I plan on painting and turning into small tables.
I think something as simple as a quick coat of paint can really update a room or a piece of furniture.

Shine on Me! I love stenciling on floors. I think stenciling is going to be super popular for a long time along with wallpaper which has made a revival.
Teresa T. says
Shine on ME! I would love to try a canopy in one of my daughters room since we are working on a french theme. My other daughter has an under the sea theme with two colors of blue, one representing the shallow area and the other deep ocean. I would also like to try the stencils!
Thank you for the giveaway!

I’ve never used stencils, mostly because I’ve always thought of them in an awful third grade project type of way. However, these stencils are awesome and I would love to be able to use them for a bedroom or bathroom.

Shine on me! My favorite paint project that I’ve done so far is redoing my office chair. I found a great cane-back chair on Craigslist, gave it a coat of white spray paint, and reupholstered the seat with some bright patterned fabric. I love it!

We painted the top foot or so (along the lines of a bulkhead) of our family room a lighter shade of blue-grey than the lower part of the walls, and it makes the ceiling seem so much higher!

Shine on me!! My favorite project so far is the key/leash board I created for the entry way of our apartment out of an old cabinet door ($1 at ReStore)some green paint, black stencils, and 4 brushed nickle hooks (from target). Its the only thing I’ve decorated with since moving in two months ago :\

“SHINE ON ME!” I go for a spa-like feel and I love integrating metallics, like bronzes and deep silvers, into other relaxing-colored spaces.

SHINE ON ME!
I just re-did two cane back chairs that were my grandma’s for our master bedroom redo. I painted them BM’s Castleton Mist (a yellowish green neutral color… really depends on what light you’re looking at them in) and covered them in a fun, modern zig zag fabric. Fun modern way to update two old chairs without taking away from their original character.
