If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

SHINE ON ME
I used 2 colors of paint to create a distressed look on some new furniture. In between the coats of paint, I rubbed wax on the edges of the table. That way when I went to sand off the top color of paint in those areas of the table, I wouldn’t also sand off the bottom color of paint.

I painted one wall of my studio a chocolate brown, after pretty much everyone and their grandmother told me that it would be terrible. It’s been brown for about 6 months and surprisingly enough everyone loves it, even the original owner/builder of my home! :)

I’ve recently seen beautiful painted bottles, where they roll the paint around the inside and put it in the oven. I’d like to try this one day. They make nice, fresh accents.

SHINE ON ME! We’re doing a major painting project this weekend – tonal stripes in our nursery. Can’t wait to see it done!

I never underestimate the power of paint, even just on the walls of a room. We just moved into a condo that has some really… interesting paint choices that include neon orange “accent” walls next to greenish-tinged cream walls. I know it’s going to look completely different once we get our sandy white color up on those walls!

I love how a coat of paint can change a room instantly. When you don’t have a lot of money for major renovations paint is a cheap alternative.

It might not sound like much, but I really want to put a colored accent wall somewhere in my house; I just can’t decide where. One of these days it WILL happen though!

Shine on me! My favorite use of paint? Painting sets for the theatre… I have learned a lot over the years about how lighting changes tones and even colors of paint, plus it’s just so much fun to get together with my theatre friends and help bring a set together and not worry or care about how paint-stained we get.

SHINE ON ME!!! My husband and I are newlyweds and under a crazy tight budget, we are about to start graduate school and living in a cookie cutter apt is REALLY making me want to do all I can to make it our own. I was given my childhood kitchen table set from my mom, which used to be my grandmothers, I would LOVE to paint it and add an antique wash! PLEASE help me make my house our HOME!
Christina Pellett says
Shine on me! I’ve been really into the combination of green and yellow lately. It reflects the seasons during spring and summer (and, in Florida, fall) and perks me up in the whole 3 weeks of cold-ish winter here :) I recently painted a $5 tea cart from the thrift store a bright green to put in our landlord-painted yellow dining room, and am working on refurbishing a $5 moving sale chipped-paint dresser find with Behr’s green Emerald Lake paint and yellow ceramic knobs from Anthro. Yay green and yellow!
Amee S says
Shine on me! I recently painted a dark rocking chair and matching footstool creamy white and added pink paisley cushions for my daughter’s nursery. It didn’t come out perfectly, but it looks a lot better than it did!!
Whitney says
Shine on me!
I have so many things I’d like to tackle with paint (poor college student though!), such as my bedroom walls which are baby girl pink right now. I was thinking a soft grey which will just completely transform the room. Some of my favorite projects I’ve seen are painted rugs, to give the chevron effect, paint by numbers wall paper, and antique aging paints to completely transform a shabby chic dresser/buffet/etc!

We painted our brick fireplace a dark slate gray (it was already painted white when we moved in, otherwise we would have left it natural) to pop off our tan walls and it really makes the fireplace the feature/anchor of the room.

shine on me! My all-time fave use of paint is to grab a white can of spray paint whenever I have something ugly (furniture, picture frames, anything) that needs a makeover. I also have a new project going where I’m stenciling patterns on some plain throw pillow covers I picked up at Ikea.
