If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

I’m not as adventurous as I’d like to be when it comes to paint, but I’ve been thinking about painting some of our too-matchy Ikea living room furniture.

I painted my husband’s old, hunter green chest of drawers into a frilly and fun pink set for our daughters room–it was so fun and I love the pop of pink in her otherwise green and blue room!

I love paint, we have no white walls in our house. Actually I don’t like the process of painting, but I love the outcome. We recently painted the ceilings in the master bedroom and bath with the hopes of adding crown moulding in the future. I love it! I can’t believe what a difference it makes!
I’m trying to get up the courage to paint our buffet in the dining room. We got a new walnut table and the buffet is a much lighter wood.

SHINE ON ME– I like unexpected colors on the exterior of homes. The outside of your home should reflect your personality, too!

My favorite project with paint was a complete makeover on a multicolored dresser that I got in return for babysitting for my neighbor. I took it from a mix of dark blue, light blue, silver and yellow to a much more sophisticated brown and creamy white. It’s the one piece of furniture that I’ve had since I was in high school that I would never get rid of!

Recently I painted a few things with acrylic paint from the crafts store. Boy, that stuff is easy to use … it stays where you put it! I painted a tin bucket, a bare wood picture frame and a bird house. Fun!

SHINE ON ME!!!
I love painting furniture that is in not-so-great shape, as well as photo frames that were formerly ugly… you know, the ugly 70s and 80s kind.

I love when walls are painted in a creative way like stripes, stencils or big diamonds. I think it can give a room so much character with out costing a lot!

I used paint to create a sort of textured accent wall– no scary sponge techniques or plaster-look-alikes– the wall looks like it was slightly brushed. Textured wallpaper was just too expensive!!

I just painted an old milk jug my parents had for years. They were going to throw it out but I saved it and put a fresh coat of sage green paint & a coat of poly. It looks brand new, kind of like one of those expensive ceramic garden stools you see in Pottery Barn but mine was FREE!!!

I’m loving using paint to create a large “frame” around a collection of framed photos. I’m hoping to use it to break up a large (18′ long) wall in our great room.

The coolest paint project I’ve seen is the one I found on skulladay.blogspot.com. It’s a secret skull stencil, found here –> http://skulladay.blogspot.com/2008/05/349-secret-skull-wallpaper.html I LOVE that silver/purple combo! So cool!

SHINE ON ME! I like using paint to envelop spaces. My favorite colors are smoky and fairly saturated – and mostly in the brown color family. But one day I painted our family room a surprising shade of aqua. And it worked!

I’m kind of scared of color and I can’t really do too much with it in the near future since I live in 623 sq ft and will likely be putting it up for sale – so it should stay it’s lovely neutral shade. But with a new place comes new possibilities!

My (most recent) favorite use of paint is to paint ceramic pieces to go in my apartment. It allows me to be as creative as I want, with little $ involved. It also allows for personalized and one-of-a-kind pieces.

I love the power of paint, so it’s hard to narrow it down to one specific thing. Probably at the top of the list “Why I love Paint” is see the transformation in furniture when you liven it up with some paint.

I love painting the backs of bookcases/cabinets to add visual interest. We just painted a subtle stripe in the back of our new bookcase (subtle because we used the same colour but in a high gloss and a matte to make the stripe so you only see it in certain lights)…I would love to know even more ways to update with paint.

I love painted floors, I live in an apartment so thats obviously a no-go. But I just painted a nightstand for my boyfriends side of the bed, navy blue with light blue stripes, and it looks so hip yet classy and it was amazingly easy even with the moulding of the nightstand. Paint=miracles!
Heather Wendling says
Shine on me! I love the idea of using paint as a headboard in a bedroom….a solid base on the wall with a horizontal line all the way across the wall in a paint color with a little shimmer to it. I’ve seen it but haven’t tried it!

I love using paint to give a piece of furniture a second, third, or fourth chance at life. That’s how my childhood dresser found a place in our entry way and how old end tables have a chic, modern look for our living room!

I am constantly painting and repainting all the rooms in my house. The most creative thing I’ve done so far is paint a striped accent wall in my girls’ room and then hand painted their first initial above each of their beds. They love it and that makes all the hard work worth it and I’m ready to do more!

My favorite use of paint is in my bedroom. With a little bit of blue painters tape and two shades of green, my room reflects my inner prep with alternating color stripes!
