If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Paint is AWESOME! Every room in our house is painted, except one. I am working on transforming my laundry room into a space that I would actually like spending time in! Paint would be a great way to start!

I love painting furniture. It’s a quick and cheap way of taking something that’s drab and making it look expensive.

I love how paint got me another 5 years at least from our kitchen. I would love to gut it, but the funds are not there yet to do it right, so we painted (you guys gave me the design – thank you!).

I LOVE how paint can instantly brighten a space. My favorite space is our master suite. It is a silver sage color and immediately calms me.

We painted some 1980’s paneling in our house crisp white. It really made the paneling look fresh and new, but still traditional and fit in with the rest of the house. :)

Painting one wall a dark blue in the middle of our beige living room was probably my favorite paint use this year!

I have a complete fascination for chalk board paint. Ever since I saw it used almost in the entire home for a buyer for Ralph Lauren ala Domino years ago. I love it’s matte-y warmth and it’s versitility!

Shine on me! I love tone-on-tone stenciling that mimics subtle wallpaper. I’m dying to do it in my bedroom, but I’m not sure if I have the energy to get it done. :)

My sister used flat paint to make the walls look like they would be soft if you touched them. It makes the room feel cozy and relaxing.

SHINE ON ME!
I painted my room lime green in college after I broke up with my boyfriend. It was ALWAYS bright and happy in there afterwards, and something totally unconventional that he never would have gone for! The only negative? My room had a strange, alien-like glow when looking in from outside at night! Needless to say, it had to be repainted before I moved out ;)

My favorite thing to paint is actually old picture frames. By lightly sanding them, priming and painting, I have a lovely eclectic mix of frame styles and yet they are all brought together by a synchronizing paint palette.

I once saw a bathroom painted with two different shades of purple as stripes. I think one was maybe a glaze? It made the room look so much larger.

We just painted a play table my husband built for our boys in “classic cherry”! The lower deck has wooden trains and the upper (lid) is reversible chalkboard on one side – legos on the other!!

I love to do fun things with paint! We recently used paintable wallpaper as a feature wall in our family room. I’ve also used faux suede pain in our powder room, and a really fun Ralph Lauren paint called Candlelight in my craft room done in stripes.

I love the way that paint and texture can transform anything…there is not a white wall in my house!

I love the floor-stencil idea, but I’m a renter :( Instead, I would use stencils to paint a bright pattern on some burlap or other unassuming fabric to create a poppy pillow case or table runner. I also like the idea of painting a repeating a bright, graphic, tile-like pattern on a canvas to create instant art.

I love how a new paint color can make an entire room feel so fresh. We’re just getting started on our own office/guestroom combo and I’m so excited about the grey/green color we chose!

I love buying cheap-o pieces of furniture from garage sales and painting them to get a completely transformed piece. It’s fun and satisfying, more than spending big bucks on something already done
Tiffany says
Shine on me! I recently painted an old work table I found in my parents barn, left over from its previous owners. I painted the table top a plum purple I found in the basement and kept the legs its original avocado green, with the chips and cracks in place. I’d like to stencil something on the top, but haven’t found the right one yet.

I love to take paint to a canvas and see what I can create. It is theraputic and also creates personality within your home if you can just let the paint and the brush work its magic. I love to listen to music and let the beat take it away.

One of my all time fav paint combos especially at this sunny summer time of year is a nice soft green with a hint of blue paired with a nice periwinkle blue…not the soo purply one it’s sooo light ad airy and paired with white it’s amazing. I’m loving painted floors right now with stencilling but try using a word and dictionary def. as your stencil instead of just a pattern
